This might be kind of a silly question…

But is it disrespectful towards parents to do things that they do not like, as long as they’re not forbidding us from doing them? I don’t mean anything bad btw. I mean reading Catholic books or going to church more often or buying something (like a (modest) shirt) that a parent doesn’t like just because their taste in clothing is different (the pattern on the fabric, the cut, etc). My family is not Catholic and sometimes they don’t really like me reading certain Catholic books… and the situation with the clothing really happened. I’m not forbidden from doing these things…my parents (specifically my mom) has just expressed dislike or disapproval for them.

By the way I am over 18, but I’m living at home because I’ve just finished university and am still looking for a job.

What do you think?

I think you’re safe in this regard, Monica. For example, when I read your post I immediately changed (in my mind) the concept of respecting ones parents to the more morally specific commandment to honor ones parents. So rather than examining whether or not you were “disrespectful,” I considered whether or not your actions dishonored your parents. Having a different sense of fashion (and acting upon it) does nothing to dishonor your parents (assuming that one is not talking about immoral fashions here, and you indicated in your post that you were not referring to anything “bad”). And certainly reading Catholic books does nothing to dishonor them either. Moreover, in terms of the books, one of the ways we help evangelize others is my living our Catholic Faith in an open and positive manner.

So, for the record, I do not see your actions as being either dishonorable or disrespectful.

Plus, one should expect to see you reading Catholic books. After all, Monica, you’re a fellow member of CAF’s Inklings 👍

Nothing personal, but I think this question is really silly. Of course it’s not disrespectful. People have different tastes and beliefs. As long as your not rubbing it in their faces or buying things that are offensive to them just to be obnoxious, it’s not even remotely disrespectful.

I think not. Who defines in plain details what “Honour your parents” encompasses? Some might think that total obedience is required (as long as nothing immoral is asked) to fulfill that command.

Sure. Some might also think the earth is flat and the moon is made of chicken feathers.

There’s your sarcasm rearing its ugly head again!😛 Also some people are prone to being scrupulous and this may be one such case. People who sincerely want to better adapt their acts to what God asks of them can never ask silly questions. Maybe you’re clear on what x or y mean, but don’t assume everybody is.

It should be noted that the commandment says “Children obey your parents** in the Lord**.” (Eph 6:1)

Your obligation towards God comes first. “He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me” (Matthew 10:37)

“For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man’s foes will be those of his own household.” (Matthew 10:35-36)

If they take offense at the things of God, it is their problem, not yours. You believe that the Catholic faith is the true faith. Live it out without any kind of fear.
