just as a little background, I came into the Church in 2002 and am married to a born-in Catholic who was victimized as a child by an abusive priest. I am also disabled by a genetic disorder that keeps me pretty much house-bound because of severe photosensitivity and environmental and chemical triggers and the danger of contagions–not to mention crippling pain and immobility. So it has been a challenge to be involved in parish life.

A year ago last June our beloved priest was reassigned. I “heard” the reason was because our parish was not growing and he was needed in another area where the growth has been phenomenal. We now share a priest with the next parish and all but the Sunday Mass has been cut and I am not even sure where or when Reconciliation is now. The parish we share with is in a resort town and the people are mostly retired and well off, and the general attitude is that if they can spare an hour off their boats for Mass they will. The shared priest is young and Philipino. I introduced myself to him last year after he was assigned to us and he was down-right rude to me. I offered my hand and he just looked at me and turned away without a word! I felt like a leper. He appears to be very popular among the tiny Hispanic fraction in the area. Needless to say, I am not impressed by these changes. and I am not the only one.

I have asked for years now to have Communion brought to me when I can’t get out to Mass, only to be told by both parishes that there is no one who can do it as I live in the area between the two and neither claims it–this is less than 15 miles from either parish on the ONLY road between the two that I know the priest must travel to get back and forth!

To add to our difficulties, my husband Lee was laid-off (after he was fired first and we threatened a lawsuit) by his Jehovah’s Witness boss a year ago in August–mainly because I am an XJW. For the past 2 years he has been teaching 150+ miles away every weekend in Washingtom DC area and it has been the only income since his lay-off besides partial Unemployment that is about to run out. He has looked for anything in the area and it just is not there. He has some limits that he has done to himself–like a bad driving record, and he would love to go back to school but we could not afford it. I have not once asked the Church for help this past year. I also have only gone to Reconciliation and Mass maybe 4 times because Lee works every weekend and if we go out of the area it is about 35 miles away at the closest. (I do not drive.)

At Lent I was so desperate for some kind of spiritual nourishment that I found a small “interdenominational” Bible Study at a church right up the road from our house on Wednesday nights and we started to attend. The people are great. So far I have not encountered any anti-Catholicism and nothing is done that could not be considered legally ecumenical. The pastor is a local attorney and he has even helped Lee out with the last speeding ticket. They have also offered Lee personal counseling services with a Therapist in the group for healing his childhood issues.

So, I wrote a heartfelt letter to our Bishop. I explained everything to him and told him about the Bible Study group. I asked for his advice. The answer I got back was shocking. He basically told me that our parish (and the one next to it)are not prepared to meet my “challenges” and that if the Bible Study was feeding me to keep going and he directed me to the local EPISCOPALIAN church–even giving me the Rev.'s phone number and giving him mine! I got a call from the Rev. saying that if I wanted to start attending at his church they could even set up a phone conference for me to hear the Mass when I can’t attend(they are a high church,anglo-catholic)! And the Bishop is ok with this. I don’t even know what to think about it all.

I spent last weekend in DC with Lee–my dear old service dog Samantha had to be put down November 1st and she was the main reason I could not go with him very often–and I stayed in the hotel watching EWTN for 2 days straight. I was in tears over an old rerun of one of Mother Angelica’s shows where she interviewed Fr. Pablo Straub and took phone questions and atleast 4 people called in to ask where they can go when they don’t have Mass available to them. Their voices were heart-breaking! And this show was from 1992! And he had no answers for them, except to pray for more priests. I did not become a Catholic to worship solitary. I NEED a community to help me deal with the daily stuff. For almost 2 years I have been isolated and it is killing me. (I only have dial-up on an 8 yr old pc that can’t load any videos, and we do not have satellite tv so we can’t get EWTN. I feel like I am in Russia!)My only recourse to any kind of social interaction is Facebook and most of the time I can’t use the chat. So I read online. That’s all I do. Something has to change.

I am starting to consider going to the Episcopal church. The Rev even offered to find me a ride.

Your bishop likely meant well, as he had no help to offer you, but NO, his advice was bad. Is there any way that you could get in touch with members of the Catholic Church that you would like to attend? Perhaps you could arrange to get a ride to Church. Even an ad in the Personals column might bring a favorable response. There is an answer to your needs. You might offer to share transportation costs with someone from your parish. Is there anyone you know who travels to your Church who is in your close vicinity? You could call the Church office and have your request placed in the bulletin. That would reach all attending members of the Church. Prayer is always the first thing to try. Good luck to you. God is aware of your need.

When I have some difficulties, I think of others who have it a lot worse than I do. For instance, there are close to a billion children going to bed hungry every night of the week.

There are still African children dying of AIDS and starvation.

There are many asian and other children around the world being used for prostitution, mainly by corporate businessmen.

Corporations have many starving slaves working all around the world.

These are just a few thoughts that might comfort your selfishness.

I can hardly believe how rude and thoughtless this response is.

OP, I agree that the Bishop’s advice is a bit unusual. I don’t have any suggestions for you, but I will pray for you.

If I were a special minister of the Eucharist in your area, I would certainly bring you Holy Communion, with the permission of the priest in my parish. So would any Australian Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist to the sick and the housebound. Parishes have dead zones between them? I cannot imagine a situation where an Australian priest, if unable to take the Eucharist himself, would not charitably allow one of the special ministers to the sick and housebound to do so. Have you explored this possibility with either parish? I find this exclusive parochial atmosphere to be puzzling. We are members of a universal Church. Surely charity is the paramount issue here or why did Christ whose preaching is all about charity [and Jesus sums His teaching up as “Love God above all, others as yourself”] want this Church if charity isn’t the framework in which such issues are determined? One, holy, Catholic (meaning universal) Church.

I have been here for 8 years, the last two not able to get to Mass. I have asked at both parishes about having Eucharist brought to me and also about maybe finding someone I could give some gas money to for a ride. Nothing. My neighbor has offered to take me to his church on Sundays with him. (I think he is Methodist.) A few years ago we had a Divine Mercy Cenale that met at Church and I got a ride from an older lady, but she had a heart attack and the Cenacle sort of fell apart because the priest (the “good” one!) was not really interested and he had too much to do besides us. Most of the women I knew from that group have moved the Cenacle to another parish that is about 30 miles away because they are more active.

I don’t know, if my husband can’t find work this week we may have to move out of the area anyway. 🤷

thank you for your prayers.

Well, if you have to move, move here and I’ll help you 🙂 PS- there are also jobs here.
I’m praying for you

The Bishop’s advice does not seem too bad to me, but it sounds like you really want to go to the Catholic Church. I have always sensed that perhaps Protestant churches have more in the way of services to offer its members, such as rides, child care, etc. If you call the Catholic Church with any kind of a problem that has to do with health, disability, or aging, the answer they give is usually to call Catholic Community Services. This may be something you could try, but I don’t know what kind of help you would get.

It seems that your problems are more serious than just the ability to get to church. If you have a disability, it would probably be a lot easier to live in a city where they have services within walking distance and buses for transportation. In fact, if you and your husband end up having to move, it would be good to do a lot of research about what would be within walking distance. When looking for a place to live, you could click on a Catholic Church and look for places to live that are within walking distance. When you live in a city, it is much easier to get a good, fast, Internet connection. If you can’t afford one, you could try finding a place to live that is within walking distance of both a Church and a public library.

As far as getting a ride to Church in your present location, it might be a good idea to ask for a ride for one Sunday in particular instead of just Sundays in general. There might be some people who wouldn’t mind giving you an occasional ride, but they wouldn’t want to be roped into giving you a ride every single week.

I am shocked and saddened by your story. Keep the faith as no one can take that from you. I’m so sorry that I don’t have any great advice. but I can offer this prayer.

MEMORARE,
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen

If in fact a Bishop of the Roman Catholic Church recommended to you that you go to an Episcopal Church (and you are in fact a baptized Roman Catholic), I would send a copy of the letter he sent to you to the Papal Nuncio in Washington, D.C.

I for one second this idea.
Reading the OP makes me want to go slap some people. What is wrong with them?
Dear Ravyn i sympathise with your situation may God’s love shine on you.

Report the Bishop to the Pope? Really? I think you people should lighten up a little. This is the same Pope that allows priests from the Episcopal Church to convert, become a Catholic priest, and remain married! I don’t think we’re living back in the time of King Henry VIII any more.

This Bishop took the time to answer this person. He was being kind. Isn’t it time we stopped bickering about issues from the 1500’s? I hope to live to see the day when we can get back together with some of these churches.
