Is this heretical?

Yes - that is possible. There have been some unfortunate popes - but the Holy Spirit has prevented them from erring in official pronouncements on faith and morals. A pope is human, like the rest of us, and outside of this limited capacity of infallibility in pronouncing official doctrine in faith and morals, is as capable as anyone else in erring, sinning and making other mistakes in their personal capacity.

Blessings,

Brian
I got that part, but the question was could the pope be a heretic?

I assume the word heretic to mean a person who rejects orthodox teachings.

But, as long as they keep that mum, its good.😉

As I understand it, St. Robert Bellarmine (one of the fathers of the Council of Trent) taught that a pope who falls into heresy automatically ceases to be pope.

Considering that at least one pope was condemned by a church council as a heretic, the answer is “Yes, a pope can be a heretic”.

The theoretical question of whether a Pope can be a heretic is somewhat confusing. For the Pope to be a heretic the bishops as a whole would have to teach something different from the Pope. But since the machinery of the Vatican controls the bishops and has power over them, how could they express this disagreement? And how would anyone know that enough bishops disagreed with Pope?

The Catholic Church does not teach that the Bible is infallible.

The Church teaches that the Bible is inerrant.

There is a difference.
I have been wondering about that. What is the difference? Thanks.

Inerrant applies to inanimate objects, infallible applies to people (well, one person :p)
Do they mean the same thing as regarding the Bible and Pope? No Mistakes? How much of the Bible is inerrant ie. the Old Testament. Much speculation as to whether events in the Old
Testament actually happened as postulated? Thanks.
