Something crazy happened to me at Mass or I should say after Mass. I stayed after Mass and said the Rosary. By the time I was done the church was completely empty. I went to the front of the church by the side altar and was going to light a votive candle. I put $5 in the locked metal box attached to the stand. I lit a match and when I tried to light the candle, the match burnt me. I flipped the match and it went into the locked metal box and set the money on fire! I could not have purposely done that if I tried as the slot in the box is very narrow. I put the fire out by holding my hand over the slot. I prayed hard and fast that I would not burn my hand and that the fire would go out. Now for the question. Near by was the water left over from Mass. Is that water Holy Water and could I have used it to put out the fire?

The water that is used during mass (found in that ltiny looking pitcher thing) has not been blessed to make it holy, so you could have used it.

Usually that water is not blessed but some priests still bless the water in the cruet like my Pastor. So, it is a case by case issue. However, I don’t think the Good Lord would mind you using Holy Water for the noble cause of preventing the buring of anything in the church.

What luck you have … don’t take up smoking.

That’s the word, cruet.

I don’t think the priest could bless the water in there, procedurelly speaking, because it is intended to drink that water and it is forbidden to drink holy water.

Or at least I thought it was.

No such prohibition.

Watch the daily Mass on EWTN. When setting-up the chalice, Deacon Bill blesses both the water in the cruet and the wine in the cruet…

It’s not forbidden to drink Holy Water.

This raises the question, why is he doing this? and the further question, what allows him to do this without appearing to act contrary to liturgical law or rubrics? Any ideas on this?

It’s not running contrary to any law or rubic that I can see, but I’m not certain why he (and others) do this, given that both species will soon be consecrated.

As I recall the priest used to always bless the water. I don’t know when they stopped doing so - in the 60’s or 70’s I think.

:rotfl: sorry to laugh but i thought this type of thing only happened to me

Did you know one of the physical tests for demonic possession is the consumption of Holy Water? Supposibly it will make those that are possessed violently ill…

My Goodness Gracious! Your post made me laugh out loud.
I don’t think God would mind at all if you used even blessed Holy Water if need be. After all, the church could have burnt down if the circumstances were right.

You probably couldn’t drop that match in there again if you tried!
God Bless you, Friend!

In the Eastern Churches it is a common practice to drink holy water. In fact it is a particular devotion associated with the “Blessing of the Waters.”
