Is this Jewish practice authentic !

One of our news sites is mocking the Jews stating that the some Kohens travel in the planes masking themselves in a plastic bag as shown in the below picture.

However, I have researched the topic and I’ve found a reference for it in the (Numbers 19), it says the person will be impure for 7 days if that person touches a human corpse, but it does not state if someone above the grave, so why some Kohens is doing that!

I want to post an anonymous post on that site explaining that such practice is not part of the OT.

Well, that should be obvious enough from the fact that plastic and airplanes did not exist when the Old Testament was written. 😉

Taking scrupulosity to the extreme, I would have thought.

Mind you, Sam, I have to wonder about people who laugh at a few Kohanim covering themselves up while demanding that half the population are covered up because Muslim men are so in thrall to their lusts that seeing a bit of a woman will drive them crazy.
 
I would not be at all comfortable if I had to sit next to someone doing that. Weird.

Yes, that is true, but I want to know which concept that Kohen used to justify his action.

So I shall assume that it’s not part of the Jewish dogma neither in the OT nor in any scripture.

It seems both are wrong, the first one has no authentic reference, while the second one is Muhammed’s dogma.

However, in both cases their mothers will be happy by not blindfold them while accompanying them. 😛

Ah, but you know that my formula would make sense - think of the advantages to the Islamic world of not having gangs of young men storming around the streets because the price of lettuce has gone up, or down, or a lettuce has looked at them the wrong way (or whatever it is that gangs of young Islamic men are storming around about on any particular day). 😃

He’s not even supposed to fly over a graveyard, so I’m wondering if the plastic bag will even be helpful in regards to keeping his purity, given that the plane already provides tons of metal around him and yet he’s supposed to avoid this situation. But what do I know? I’m no scholar 😉

I wish people wouldn’t stare when something rare happens, but simply let others go for their own business. If you’re too curious, ask. If you feel that your question might be a question that this person gets asked often you might want to avoid asking your question in order to not make the person feel as if he always had to explain things. But maybe I’m wrong altogether. And I haven’t read the thread on the muslim forum. But this is what I would do.

I believe he would only wear the plastic bag for a couple of minutes, just as long as he’s flying over the graveyard, and this the airline might allow, given that he might not wear the plastic bag during the entire flight?

Oh, question: Can he himself remove the plastic bag, or would touching the plastic bag mean that he’s impure?

I think as Kaninchen have mentioned it’s an extreme scrupulosity.

Plus that practice has no authentic reference in the OT.

Well halacha says that you can’t get in touch with the dead or you’re unclean for a while, and this man is a High Priest on top of all.

If it’s an extreme scrupulosity or not doesn’t matter to me. Everything is relative. So I was wondering if he was allowed to remove the plastic bag. As soon as I’ll get the chance to ask someone I will 🙂

I think it is not Islamic to mock other people’s faith . But sadly , Muslims aren’t the best representative of Islam.

In any case… in regards to touching a corpse. Muslims will be unclean too and they have to do a certain ritual wash in order to be clean again.
 
I have to admit that this practice has me a bit perplexed and certainly not for us Lutherans.

But we call all draw strength in this man’s ability to endure the taunts of man in his deference to the law of God .
 
I’d like to ask:

How does this man know when he is walking on an ancient burial ground which is way under the earth and it is unmarked…???

A good remark 👍, since people have lived and died in many generations at many spots on this earth, the person could dig beneath the house and find an ancient skeleton by chance.

You know sister in Christ, that remark endorses the concept that JESUS came to fulfill the OT to close that chapter of human education covenant and start a new spiritual one.
 
My husband is a kohane and he doesn’t fly around in plastic bags, LOL. He is prevented from entering cemataries , tombs and areas where there may be the deceased.

Some sects of Judaism take care to make sure they follow a commandment to the highest
level possible. This is an example of that. I don’t believe that way myself, but I am not gong to fault him either for doing what he thinks G-d truly wants him to do.

I remember reading an article where the extremely pious wanted planes rerouted so they would not fly over cemetaries. I guess that must not have happened, and this is how they solved the problem. As long as he isn’t hurting anyone, don’t see it as being an issue.

I wonder how he breaths in that thing?
