Is this just as bad?

I saw this at my cousin’s 12th birthday. There was an adult pouring a smal amount of alcoholic beverage in his cup of soda. Is this just as bad as drinking an actual can or is drinking not a sin?

Drinking in moderation isn’t a sin. I just had a drink myself, to relax while I watch football.

Drinking alcohol in itself is not a sin. It’s drunkenness - excessive drinking - that is the problem.

The adult was pouring an alcoholic beverage into the 12-year-old’s soda?!

Drinking alcohol is not a sin,
Had it been I’m pretty sure the preist wouldn’t have brought champagne and allowed some members of the parish to bring beers on new years when he invited everyone to the hall for a movie night

I should add that Catholics should be complying with the law of their country as well. Underage drinking is wrong, so it would not be permissible for me personally to be drinking. I am assuming you mean he was pouring it for himself, however.

To my knowledge, I don’t think a minor drinking a very small amount of alcohol with a parent is actually something that can be prosecuted but I might be wrong about this. Or it might depend on the state.

@TK421 Not sure if it would or not. Probably better to be on the safe side. There is no reason a child/minor would need to drink alcohol.

Well, since drinking is a virtuous act, and the State can’t forbid it’s citizens from doing something virtuous, well I think you see where I’m going.

I am confused why drinking would be considered virtuous. I mean, it’s not a sin, but why would it be a virtue?

I merely said that underage drinking is not permissible, since compliance with that law in no way contradicts our faith.

Sorry, I’m mistaken.

Drinking, in itself, is not virtuous or vicious (positive or negative), but morally neutral. When we consider the virtue of temperance with regards to consuming alcohol, the total abstinence from alcohol is not where virtue lies (just as over-consumption is not where virtue lies). So technically, the State forbidding minors to drink keeps them from practicing a virtuous act, and is thus unlawful. There is nothing wrong with catholic parents giving their children a little something to drink.

And, the historical presence of alcohol in the Catholic religion says something. Many Saints drank, there has been much commentary by certain saints on it. Most importantly, Our Lord drank, and turned wine into Himself. Our Lord was perfectly virtuous in all of His acts, wasn’t He?

By the way, I’m not trying to be confrontational, nor am I trying to fight with you. I just find this topic very interesting.

Whenever our pastor throws a party or barbecue there’s always beer served.
Our church does a fundraiser dinner every year and there’s always hard alcohol.
