DEAR SIR, I SPEND 4 WEEKS A YEAR WITH MY DAD IN NEW ENGLAND. WE GO TO MASS JUST ABOUT EVERY DAY. DURING THE WEEKDAY MASSES ALL SEEMS THE SAME AS HOME-- EXCEPT THE PRIEST GIVES COMMUNION, UNDER BOTH SPECIES TO 4 MEN AND WOMEN AND WHATEVER ALTARBOY-GIRLS ARE THERE. THE PRIEST AND ALTAR CHILDREN,THEN SIT DOWN. THE 4 MEN AND WOMEN THEN GIVE COMMUNION TO ABOUT 12 PEOPLE EACH. THE SAME IS DONE WHERE I LIVE, BUT THE PRIEST DOESN’T TAKE A BREATHER.
ALSO ON SUNDAYS, A WOMAN SINGS BOTH THE PRIESTS PART AND THE RESPONSES-I WOULD NOT COMPLAIN BUT SHE TRIES TO SING LIKE JOAN BOAZ, AND IT IS PAINFUL TO MY EARS, AT MASSES END SHE GETS A STANDING OVATION!!!
ARE THESE NORMAL PRACTICES??? IF NOT HOW WIDESPREAD IS IT? LOVE IN CHRIST, TEDDY81

Laypersons functioning as EMHC (extraordinary ministers of holy communion) should only be used when there are far too many people for the Priest to give communion to alone. A priest, or any ordained (or religious?) should never sit down while others do his distribution for him unless he is too old or diabled to give communion himself.

as for the singer lady, there are some parts of teh mass only the priest ro deacon should say/sing. I dont know what parts this lady sung, but if they are parts you would usually associate with a ordained minister then she proably shouldnt be singing it.

unfortunatly liturgical abuses are all to common in the church, and yes they are illicit (aginst church law). The first example is more common than the second though. I might suggest reading “Mass confusion” by Jimmy Akin if you want to get more specifics on this issue/
