CCC 2351 Lust is disordered desire for or inordinate enjoyment of sexual pleasure. Sexual pleasure is morally disordered when sought for itself, isolated from its procreative and unitive purposes.

If the entire reason why you stopped the car was so you could look at her for even a small measure of sexual gratification then it’s sinful. But if you were sitting at a traffic light and noticed her standing there and was simply and briefly appreciating how physically beautiful God made her then it’s no problem whatsoever!

I don’t think this behavior is sinful until deliberate explicit sexual thoughts are welcomed, entertained and enjoyed.

The Bible says that *all *sin is mortal and will send us to hell: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)

A Catholic comes to a Catholic forum and asks for advice about whether he committed a certain type of sin under a Catholic belief structure. Do you think this is in any way the answer he was looking for?

This is a bit like walking into an AA meeting and saying you don’t believe alcoholism is an addiction. You may have a valid view point, but know your audience! There is an appropriate forum for your posts, its Non-Catholic Religions.

And to the OP… it is clearly not a grave matter to momentarily check someone out. Try harder next time, you will get better at it the more you work at it.

so if there was no thought after looking its not a grave sin.

i know i shouldn’t look but i still looked. its like somebody telling you there is somebody behide you when you know nobody is there but you still look.

i also deal with thoughts of which if i look at a person sometimes i get a impure thought of which they really bug me.

i also get arguementive thoughts all the time.

so i’m ok to take communion of christmas night/day

there was a temptation to look lower. at first i didn’t, then i did for a second and looked away.

but i didn’t have an after thought or dwelt or day dream about the women.

i dont know what to do or think anything any more. i go to cofession every week about one thing that may happen during the week because i can never work out if it is grave or not now i dint know about this situation and thinking if i should have commiuon or not

Your priest can help you with this. Scrupulosity can drive you crazy if you let it. I’m not seeing a sin here at all. There are some good books on scrupulosity. Fr. Thomas Santa wrote one that is about the best out there. You be at peace!

Your behaviour was in no way disordered or inordinate. It was perfectly normal and proper human activity.

I agree.

God gave the world good-looking women for men to appreciate and vice versa. When this happens again, just thank God for his wonderful creations and move on.

It is only natural for a normal man to look at a lovely woman. You looked, but did not wish to have sex with that woman, especially if you are not used to going around with girls. In similar circumstances I’ve learnt to just look and exclaim:
“Dear God, you are truly good to make girls so beautiful !”
and
“I have no intention whatsoever of offending you by any impure thoughts”

Very true Alfred.

I totally agree.

That is the right thing and what God wants.

So wait… It is only if you Desire for a lustful thing. Then the look becomes a sin? The look ITSELF is not a sin? While on the internet I was reading the news, and an advertisement was on the side, with a very revealing image. I tried to minimize the screen and look away, but had a slight look down.

(I dont wan’t to change the thread, I just notice it is a similar situation.)

So the look of itself is not a sin? Is it the desire for lust?
So one could enjoy the artwork from say the Renaissance (which has some nudity) and unless a lustful desire/though comes into mind by consent, you are in no way damaging/risking your immortal soul?

This is sorta similar to the question that was being asked.
I think I have scrupulousity, So it is hard I know. I recommend that the question-asker read some of Scrupulous Anonymous’ newsletters. They are extremely helpful.
I think this one is useful … * November 2005: Was it a Mortal Sin?

Here’s a long winded post for ya, as I have found some time on my hands:

Hehe, I do not really know the answers myself my brother, lust is an elusive beast. I think using your honest judgment guided by holy teaching, a confessor, and grace will yield you the best answer, and over time you will develop a better sense of when there is and isn’t lust. Just remember:

-the Church teaches that mortal sin requires BOTH full consent and full knowledge (what that means is not entirely clear, and I think that is for the best), while being of a grave matter.

-as far as what constitutes the grave matter of lust, I myself am unclear on it. In my own experience the best label I can put on it is one of describing my experience. Lust seems the realization of impurity of heart in regards to physical beauty (which is a great thing IF removed from the impurity). The only other way I can identify it is by its effects. When I am expreiencing a temptation of lust or even the indulgence in it in sin, it seems my mind is narrowed to where I can no longer HONESTLY love the object of my lust. That is, it seems incompatable with maintaining the will of goodness for them and others in all things. Hopefully that is of a bit of help, though you must remember I am speeking with no authority on the matter, and my indicating what it is might be too narrow or too wide.

-venial sin is not REQUIRED to be confessed, only mortal sin

-Also remember that no mere experience of temptation makes you guilty (but it is a good reminder of your fallen state). Insofar as you are a healthy man, you are going to find your thoughts and impulses wandering and so forth, all you must do is make sure your will (that is YOU pure and simple, not your appetites, not your inclinations, but YOU) isn’t wandering. When you find yourself in such thoughts, the second you are aware and have a choice to make, make it. Choice (the object of the will) is where sin lies (or lack thereof), not in the impulses and habitual or natural movements of the eyes (that is not to say you do not have a separate duty of destroying such habits by habituation insofar as you are capable).

That is my advice on lust anyhow. HOPEFULLY it is sound ;).

As for scrupulosity

It appears to me that you are dealing with scrupulosity. However, I think that is something more for you God and your confessor to determine over a good period of time.

In my own experience scrupulosity is overcome over time (I speak as one who is entirely over it, which is not entirely true :p) with experience and with the realization of the devil’s ability to paralyze the scrupulous with paralyzing legalism after you turn yourself over to wanting to please God in all things. You see, if you are not easily prevented from confession, the most logical thing for the devil to do is to make confession itself a stumbling block. One who suffers it, in my opinion, will probably eventually realize that the paralyzing legalism is not necessary for giving yourself over to righteousness/God (note: I speak of PARALYZING legalism. We ought to obey all doctrine 100%, but not get too caught up in the particulars for every moment holy duty calls even in the most simple things. If we get hung up on the particulars we neglect our present duties I think)

On a further note, 99% of all my troubles with it were on matters of lust and on matters of brief (for the most part unwilled) thoughts or past sins I would be most embarrassed to confess. Hitting the golden mean is hard, and since the devil also tempts us (in the opposite way) to keep things from confession, due to the embarrassing nature of them, I think only good experience will teach the scrupulous what they ought to confess and what they ought not (to avoid being paralyzed).

Realize that this is a cross
, and then your suffering in it can find meaning in following Christ’s footsteps. It is often said that the holy mean lies between two unequal excesses/deficiencies. One is worse than the other. For example, hedonism is much worse than the rejection of all pleasures as evil, though both are evils. If you and your confessor determine you are scrupulous at least take joy that you are perhaps moving onto the least of the two evils (scrupulosity vs. uncaring). PERHAPS bending the wood beyond the place you need it to rest at is a necessary step.

And perhaps more effectively than all this long-windedness, I shall say a prayer for you brother ;). May St. Padre Pio intercede for you on matters of fruitful confessions, may St. Michael intercede for you in your struggles to gain self-mastery in all things, and may St. Anselm intercede for you in matters of clear and proper logical reasoning.

It’s good to be gifted with a delicate conscience; you always know when you’re wrong. The problem is, your temptations will be quite strong and you feel like falling. I’m now 67 and am not that scrupulous, knowing when I fall and when I don’t. But in my youth I had the same difficulty you have and for many years kept away from Holy Communion ; I thought I was not holy and worthy enough to receive it.
Spiritual growth is a process; it doesn’t happen overnight. It may take a whole life-time. Oppose Satan when he comes with doubts, fears and temptations and pray to Jesus to help youthrough this continuous battle. Jesus is with you all the time, regardless of your situation. (Hebrews 13:5)
We are all vulnerable and at some point we stumble. We are happily progressing on our Christian path, getting to know God; overcoming some bad habit, when we do something really stupid: an outburst of rage; reverting back to an impure sexual habit or swelling up with pride at someone else’s failure. We are at a fork on the road: We may be overcome with guilt or may be hardened, justifying ourselves. If we drift away on the second path, recovery is very difficult. But the first path will restore us to closer intimacy with God. We have to realize that we all fall. Even at our best we are completely unworthy when compared to a Holy God. When we fail the Lord is watching and protecting. (Psalm 37:23,24)
Therefore, we can go to God, tell Him about our failure in complete honesty and ask His forgiveness. When we humble ourselves and go before Him and confess our sins God is faithful and just to forgive us. (1 John 1:9) No matter how grievously you have erred The Lord is utterly faithful to forgive. (1 John 2:1)
