Is this Mass OK?

I was out of town and so went to a different church then usual.
It was one of the weirdest masses I have been to.
It was right next to/ connected to (?) a Catholic school right next to it, and I think these were kids who went to the school.
They had a brass band, like with the tuba and such.
And the singers were children.
But the issue that concerned me was that instead of the priest giving a homily, a child girl came up and read a script while other kids were dressed as characters from a Nativity, and went through it like it was a play.

Is this allowed.
 
Well, everything seems fine except for the lack of a homily. There must always be a homily on a Holy Day either by a priest or Deacon.
 
Well, before the Mass someone came up and read a thing that seemed to be about a bishop about supporting priests.
But what does this lack of a homily mean in terms of validity and licitness?
 
Some Church’s will do a Mass for the children that how it is in my parish.
The kids will be the choir and also read the readings but the priest should give a homily.
 
Did they read? First reading, Psalm, second reading, reading of Gospel, homilie, celebration of Eucharistic sacrifice, communion. At what point did they skip one of the parts?
 
The homily is the only thing missing I’d say. The priest said something about being glad to be able to do the show or whatever and how it was like yesterday those in the band were 3rd graders.

After the gospel reading a little girl read like a script about the Christmas story with children acting and then we went to say our prayers after this, without a proper homily

Oh, the Mass was valid without a doubt. And I probably would guess licit. But the rubrics were not followed in regards to the homily.

But the letter the priest read from the bishop was not a homily if it was before Mass.

I’ve been at masses like that. Normally coinciding with numerous children frequenting catechesis at that parish.

The thing is: That short thing the priest said was equivalent to a mini-homilie. The focus being, to be with the children and the child Jesus, and it is their mass and their party. That was the homily, thinking about it: beautiful one might say. 😀
 
Matthew 19:13. Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them.

Matthew 19:14. But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.
 
A priest or deacon are required to give a homily on Sundays and Holy Days. What happened was probably illicit.

A homily is not necessary for a valid Mass. Many weekday Masses do not include homilies. They are valid.

That my friend is the horrible thing called the “Children’s Mass”. It has become a Christmas Eve staple throughout our country, and is cringeworthy.
 
My personal opinion: I take great joy in seeing the rugrats enjoying themselves and taking over the “House of Our Father”. I think, sincerely, at those ages the children’s enjoyment takes precedence over formality of any kind. They have to sit through homilies all year long they are bound not to understand. If they have their party the church becomes synonymous with fun, I have great memories from those masses - I think they’ll have too.

They can have their play, just have it before Mass or after Mass. The Mass is not some DIY hootenanny.
 
Did someone say it was a hootenanny? No? I didn’t think so either.

I prefer to not be present at a Christmas Mass for Children; but given the age of the children who participate in these, I think it is a good thing, It takes what is often a boring “adult” think and brings it down to their level; after all, they are not “mini adults”. And surprise of surprises, some of them might remember that as they grow older.

Golly - they might have a fond memory of Mass. Tch tch tch…
