we must pray for guidance when in doubt, and not stop trying to avoid the occasion of sin.
I agree. This is going to sound weird but I think it’s appropriate:

I was working out and doing crunches as normal and some really impure things came into my head which I fought fiercely against. A couple seconds later when I thought I had passed the moment and let my guard down, I realized I was climaxing. All I could do was lay there and think of the Cross as I ejaculated. Yeah, it was pretty intense and felt really good in a basic kind of way which I wouldn’t mind experiencing again, but I know that in the long run it meant so much more that I was fighting to stay close to my God when something had happened that was distressing to my soul. I didn’t force it. It just…happened. Now I’m far from any pure saint, and God help us all in temptation, but I do think that prayer and avoidance of occasions of sin (i.e. me changing the way I do crunches so as not to “start” anything) is something we owe to ourselves and at least Him to put up a fight against the base instincts. Pray for me. I’ll do the same.

Maybe the wrong forum, but here goes…In marriage, what if the spouses enjoying giving each other affection and pleasure without having children every single time? Would you turn your spouse down if they wanted to always please you because they love you? Also, fetishes, which many people have, are there for life and always giving people urges, so with your spouse, it’s ok to please and satisfy each other. Let’s face it, can we all really have 100 children? Will the Church help support couples with having many children in this expensive world we live in? Also, moral culpability for masturbation can be reduced based on factors as in CCC 2352 states"To form an equitable judgment about the subjects’ moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety, or other psychological or social factors that lessen or even extenuate moral culpability." Such things, God understands. No human being is going to preach to me and give me an idealistic approach to matters with love-making. when you get the urge and intimate feelings with your spouse, I’m not resisting because I will live my spouse forever and likewise. Also, in 1997 Pontifical Council for the Family issued a document called “Vademecum for Confessors Concerning the Morality of Conjugal Life,” (check me if I’m wrong) it states that contraception can be morally permissable if one of the spouses does contraception and the other engages in it if they are married licitly, if such things will cause separation or divorce (if they prevent sex with each other), and if you are patient with your spouse and pray and talk about such things together to not do such conduct.
Iv’e had this happen to me also. At one time I reasoned that it was not a sin. Then I started to reason that if this was not a sin, going a bit further would not be a sin. Before I knew it I was trying to rationalize that masturbation was not a sin. So for me, at the very least, this is a near occasion of sin. I have resolved to fight this, although it usually ends in a wet dream within the next day or two.

It sounds like you may have more self control than I do, so your experience may be different; but I would refrain from this. I know what you mean about the physical pain of stopping.

[PLEASE NOTE I MAY OFFEND SOME WITH MY HONESTY AND LANGUAGE]

I can see why so many frown upon Catholicism as the question of causing physical harm doesn’t enter the equation.

Sex is good. An orgasm and ejaculation are good! They feel good! How many of us don’t wake up after a particular wet dream feeling quite satisfied?

I’m 47. I get several erections a day…so hundreds per year. I have a wet dream about once a month. Several times I hurt myself by worrying about the guilt and conciuosly halting the progress. As I said it’s called retrograde ejaculation where the semen is forced into the bladder. That’s not a good thing…very unhealthy in any conversation.

So, and we’ll see how this goes, I have been letting the feeling manifest by their own feelings. No imagery nor stimulation just a straight shot from flacid to what is actually a quite larger than normal experience.

It’s actually quite a liberating experience! As pleasurable as it is it feels more like a body process than sex or masturbation…

Is allowing ourselves to feel good a sin?

Oddly a quick search on line doesn’t provide much about this physiologically speaking. Certain anti-depressants could cause this but I’m drug free. A small amount of stress in my life but nothing too tragic. I really can’t explain it…

Perhaps it’s like anything that is a great pleasure like a huge brownie or an eclair or something. I know I shouldn’t but it’s only occational…and I’ll feel worse later… This is like eating the brownie and having it too so it’s an interesting guilt situation.

It would just be nice to not have to worry about sex…

I hope that one with such a philosophy does not find himself being tortured for classified information- he will give in because if it avoids damage it must be ok!

The point is that nothing is higher, nothing is more valuable, and nothing weights more heavily than right and wrong. Nothing else matters if you can classify a choice into the categories of right and wrong.

Sexuality of any kind outside of marriage is wrong. Don’t rationalize sin. And don’t be easy on yourself.

Oral sex/stimulation of one’s spouse as a means of foreplay is okay within the marital embrace to orgasm for the female (before or after sexual intercouse)
Is this so stated in official Catholic literature ? I always assumed it was allowed … but, have not seen it so stated.

Also … are gals allowed to have thought orgasms ? Thinking of boyfriends for example, but w/o physical stimulation. I’d guess not … since this wouldn’t work so well for guys.

Hi,
I’ll try to be as delicate as possible but may use terms some find offensive so please note this before reading further:

Yes Church say masturbation is a grave sin. It define masturbation as the manipulation of the genitals for sexual pleasure.

Now here is what has happened to me twice now. With no external stimulation I retire to bed. I will then become aroused through no conscious acts. Almost as if my body is saying “it’s time”. Thoughts will naturally wonder in a direction of sex. I can usually keep the graphic details from manifesting. But my arousal will increase. I used to really struggle with this and generally it would go away without any grand praying or worrying. But quite often a very restless night.

Recently I stopped fighting it. As I said twice now as I lay perfectly still in bed; the the arousal will totally climax into a full blown orgasm. No rubbing, no touching. In fact knowing how I am I will make sure my penis is not touching a sheet or anything to stimulate it. I don’t move my body at all. Just giving myself the freedom to feel this seems to be all it takes.

Yes the thoughts of of a woman (none in particular) are present but more as an embrace not a masturbatory fantasy…Same thoughts I’ve had without sexual arousal…

Wet dreams are perfectly fine and these just feel like semi controlled ones. Those are ghenerally associatted with some quite vivid imagry! I’ll have a wet dream once or twice a month…but this time … Yes I’m wide awake. Yes it feels real good! One benefit seems to be a complete release. I have had dreams where I was approaching climax and feeling guilty stopped it with physical pain.

I think the pleasure is throwing me. In reality it’s just an incredible release! I’ve not tried to conjour this up but feel that may be tempting worse habits. But my goodness what doesn’t tempt us as humans! If I’ve resolved to not to initiate this, not to stimulate physically…

Since I returned the Catholic Church and learned of the sin of masturbation I have only twice done so and those in quick more of a release to get to sleep. No grand productions as in years past. The guilt was horrible and I ran to confession! I don’t like the way I feel after that and have no desire for any guilt!

I don’t feel the guilt like that now. This happened last night.

Is this common? What do you think?

No guilt, its a natural phenomena I am a catholic, & I am not truly sure that Masturbation is a sin, the Church says it is, but I kind of dont believe it is, although I will confess it if I do it, because the Church tells me its a sin. Usually if I go to confession for self abuse, the Priest seems to think nothing of it & He gives me very small penances, The Church knows that it is a sin hard to control

I think it is unnecessary to be so explicit in asking these questions. How would you ask them if Jesus or Saint Joseph were with you, and you decided to ask them- perfect models of chaste living- about this sort of thing?

Part of the trick to sexual purity is not thinking about it too much. If you spend long periods of time thinking about this stuff, of course it’s going to cross your mind when you don’t want it to.

Dwelling on impure thoughts, masturbation, looking at pornography, and doing anything sexual that is degrading to someone- that ends with the man ejaculating somewhere other than in his wife’s vagina are all mortal sins. If you do them, you need to go to confession before you receive communion- and you need to stop doing them.

I am glad you confess this sin if you do it, but this is not the proper context to question the Church’s teaching on the matter as it could cause others to doubt their faith. You may doubt, but the Church has the protection from error of the Holy Spirit, and it has centuries of wisdom to back up its claims.

It is unfortunate that confessors often overlook things that should be said, and do not give enough attention to the souls that come to them seeking God’s forgiveness, and their counsel in living a better life in all areas.

I realise that this thread is pretty old but I think this question comes up often. I have had similair experiences for about the last 5 years or so. In my experience, it most often starts out of nowhere out of the blue without any connecting though. I sudden twinge or sensation. Or sometimes it could be the thought or fear it could happen that triggers it. Then once aware of the sensation, it’s the awareness of the sensation that builds to the ultimate conclusion. I let there be absulutely no connecting sexual thought or physical contact, no matter what the degree or temptation. I have always been very vigilant to make sure of that. I tell myself that I cannot be forced to do anything. It has happened driving in the car, once walking through an airport (I had to dive into a bathroom stall), and most often laying down for sleep. At first I tried very hard to prevent the process, but in experience I realized that the more I fight it the more it actually prolongs the sence of pleasure from the ordeal. And even if I am succesful in stopping the process, it returns again and happens more quickly, with less control and maybe at a lot more “inconvenient” time. There where times that I felt as if my own body had rapped me. Now when I sence it starting, I have learned to guard my thoughts and let it occur as quickly as possible. As far as culpability goes, I feel varying degrees. I always bring up to my confessor that, “I have frequint spontanious sexual releases, although I never do anything physically or entertain any (name removed by moderator)ure thoughts to fasilitate this, sometimes I feel that I lend to much will to the process or let myself enduge it to much.” Although it may be that it is not something I “must” confess, by confessing it it draws a line the sand for me. It becomes to easy to justify things such as this. If I never let myself go past “A”, then I know I will never fall into “B,C, or D” if you follow. My personal recommendation to anyone experiencing this is; Although you shouldn’t allow yourself to get wrapped up in errational guilt, it should always be something to mention to your confessor. I feel that is a weakness of our animal side that we must accept but also do our best to keep in check. Try not to surrender to or indulge the pleasure aspect of it as much as possible. You will have varying success. Hense the need to always confess it. If you do this it will most likely never venture beyond the veneal.

Why settle for the cheap, primitive natural desires when you can experience the higher-ordered pleasures of the supernatural? This even goes for those who are married!
