I was at Mass yesterday (I went to a parish I had never gone for Mass before), and after the priest consecrated the body and blood of Christ he used the word “friends” instead of “disciples”…

ie. This cup is the cup of my blood, the blood of the new and everlasting Covenant, which will be shed so that sins will be forgiven. Do this in memory of me. Then h****e gave the cup to his disciples (here he used friends instead) and said, Take this and drink from it. …

Is this form acceptable? I had never heard it this way. It sure doesn’t sound right to me…

Were there First Communions at that Mass? If so, there’s a very good chance the priest used one of the Eucharistic Prayers for children.

No first communions. But now I feel better… I just never knew this was permissible.

One of our priests does this, too. And it is incredibly annoying and distracting! He does it at every Mass he celebrates, without regard to whether there is a first communion or not. So, I can only surmise that he is not celebrating a Children’s Mass. This being the case, it appears to be an illicit practice, as no priest is allowed to change the wording of the liturgy, as it is not his to change. I don’t have the specific references about this to hand at the moment but can get them if anyone wants.

By the way, I have an appointment with our pastor next week to discuss this and several other illicit practices that occur regularly at the “community” we currently worship at. Please pray for us both!

God Bless,

Jeff

Here are the references about changing or adding words to the liturgy:

Redemptionis Sacramentum, especially paras.#51 (“51.] Only those Eucharistic Prayers are to be used which are found in the Roman Missal or are legitimately approved by the Apostolic See, and according to the manner and the terms set forth by it. “It is not to be tolerated that some Priests take upon themselves the right to compose their own Eucharistic Prayers”[129] or to change the same texts approved by the Church, or to introduce others composed by private individuals.[130]" and 59*,”[59.] The reprobated practice by which Priests, Deacons or the faithful here and there alter or vary at will the texts of the Sacred Liturgy that they are charged to pronounce, must cease. For in doing thus, they render the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy unstable, and not infrequently distort the authentic meaning of the Liturgy."*

and Sacrosanctum Concilium, 22.3 (“Therefore no other person, even if he be a priest, may add, remove, or change anything in the Liturgy on his own authority.”).

God Bless,
Jeff

Friends is an option acceptable only for a childrens Mass.

Some priests will use the Children’s Eucharistic Prayers if only one child is present…Or if they consider all the old ladies in the parish their “children”.

The word “friends” is also in the Eucharistic Prayer for Masses of Reconciliation I:
“he took the cup, filled with wine.
Again he gave you thanks, handed the cup to his friends, and said:”
(Roman Missal, Catholic Book Publishing Co., New York, 1985, page 1124).

When is a Mass a Mass of Reconciliation? And how do the parishioners know? (Exposing my ignorance, which is much greater than even I am aware, here :o )

I guess children are not capable of understanding the difference between Apostles, disciples and friends. More dumbing down. geessssshhhhhh. 😦

A children’s Mass must be predominantly attended by children in any case.

This wasn’t a children’s Mass either, so what to do, go to a different parish or bring it up to the pastor?

Keep in mind that this does not invalidate the Consecration. But I would bring it up to the pastor, then the Bishop if necessary.

I’ve noticed that many priests do that. Another substitution I’ve heard is “for us sinners [instead of **men] and for our salvation . . .”

I thought the pastor of my new parish was making interpolations to the Gospel, then I realised he wasn’t reading it but doing it from memory (impressive) and just making the occasional error.

Kudos to your pastor and his memory (much better than mine I would imagine!), didymus. And certainly, being human he will err. But if it becomes “habitual”, he may need to have his memory gently refreshed. I repeat from a previous post…Sacrosanctum Concilium, 22.3 (“Therefore no other person, even if he be a priest, may add, remove, or change anything in the Liturgy on his own authority.”).

Priests are not supposed to say the Eucharistic Prayer from memory, no matter how many times they’ve said Mass in their lives. They are always required to READ the prayers.

The Mass for children is not to be used unless the very large majority of the people present are children.

Friends is often substituted illicitly by priests who have decided to democratize the liturgy. If he says at the end of Mass "May almighty God bless us [instead of you], he is probably of this mind. Horizontalization is a terrible enemy of worship – probably the worst. “Friends” nearly implies that any friend of Jesus can confect the Sacrament. Remember, the Church teaches that Jesus instituted the priesthood at the Last Supper. By his saying to the twelve, “do this…” he gave them the ability to do so. This is why it’s very important for advocates of women’s ordination to figure out how they can get Mary Magdalene or some other women present at the Last Supper. It’s amazing that it even got into the Eucharistic Prayer for Children. Remember an important first principle of worship. God is God and I/we are not.
