I’m wondering if I’m doing anything wrong by going to two different parishes. Let me explain.
I have my home parish where I live (out in the sticks lol) and I go to it Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays for Mass. Then I have another parish (40 miles away) I go to on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Sundays (for Latin Mass which my home parish doesn’t have).
I go to the second parish for a couple of reasons, #1 because they have a Latin Mass which I think is cool, secondly because my home parish doesn’t have morning Mass on Tue and Wed. The second parish also has Perpetual Adoration. These parishes are not in the same dioceses which I don’t know if it matters or not?
I’m a new Catholic so I’m not sure if all this is ok or not. I try to support both parishes financially but consider the parish in my town as my ‘home parish’, and I pray for both parishes.
So am I doing anything wrong here?

you may attend daily or Sunday Mass anywhere you wish. You are automatically a member of the parish in which you reside and should be supporting it. You should certainly also give something to a parish where you worship regularly, if you can. You are also free to register at another parish, even in another diocese if you live close to the boundary line, worship there, join their parish life, but you should then support them as your parish financially and in all the other ways.

In Ohio we lived on the boundary, literally, of two dioceses, attended and supported or home or residential parish in one, and were also very active in the parish in the next town, next dioceses, mainly through participation in their ministries, our children attending their youth group (none in our home parish) and so forth, so we contributed to both. I completed my catechist certification in the other diocese because classes in my own were so liberal and unorthodox at that time.

High Rachel,

You are not doing anything wrong. I to go to another parish from time to time For the EF Mass. I am betting it is the same one you go to. ST Martin of Tours. My parish priest is aware if it and I tell him if he would celebrate the EF Mass every once in a while I would not have to go there. He just laughs at me. Not to say he opposed to the EF he just does not fell he could do it properly.

God Bless.

Rachel,
You can go to any Mass (or anything else) at any Catholic Church anywhere in the world anytime you choose. How’s that for open-ended? Truly, you can.

You can also donate anywhere you choose, but there’s a certain responsibility to support ones own parish. If you go to another parish, there’s also a certain limited responsibility to support them financially. Even though you’re “just visiting” they still have to pay the bills, so an occasional donation is most appropriate–just how much is up to you. Since you’ve said you’re already donating, I’ll include this next part…

You can only be an official member of the parish in which you live (parishes are territorial) but you might be able to “register” at the other parish. I put that in quotes because registration is not the same thing as parish membership. I don’t want to get us bogged down in the topic of donations and receipts. Suffice to say that if you expect a receipt for your taxes, you need to let them know this because that’s the only way that know to record them (some people think "well, don’t they just “know”–no, they don’t). Cancelled checks are not acceptable as receipts for tax purposes.

You might or might not be able to register in the visiting parish, depending on their policy and the diocese policy, and thereby get on the parish mailing list; if that’s what you would like.

Don’t ever hesitate to go to Mass anywhere you choose–you’re always welcome. But all else being equal, a Catholic should still attend primarily at his own home parish (at least on Sundays and holy days).

I don’t think it’s uncommon to split your time between different parishes. I do the same. I have my regular parish where I go on Sunday and where I’m involved in RCIA, Scripture study, and other activities. And I have another parish very close to work where I go for daily Mass. I make my main contributions of both time and money to my regular parish, but I send a small monthly check to the other parish as well.

Yep, you got it, that’s my ‘second’ parish lol. I think it’s the only one from Indy to Louisville that has the EF isn’t it? The whole reason I started going there in the first place was because I wanted to see what everyone on this board was talking about when it came to the EF since I’d never seen one before. I went, I liked, and I kind of just kept going.
I won’t be there tomorrow though cause I’m going to Indy to get Confirmed 😃

FrDavid96,
I go to my home parish on Saturday for the Sunday Vigil, but I go to the other parish on Sundays because they have the EF Mass there, that’s ok right?

My “old” OF parish is 11.0 miles from the house; my recently joined OF parish is 10.3 miles from the house. But my favorite parish, FSSP, is 119.9 miles from the house. I belong to the FSSP parish and the recently joined OF parish ( which I support and attend about 1 - 2 times a month). We also have been celebrating a Dominican Mass there for about 1 1/2 years. So to be able to keep the permissions open to us, I support it.

Yes they are the only one this side of Indy. God bless you on your confirmation. As your receive this sacrement of Gods grace in the gift of the Holy Ghost may it open to you the on growing filment of his joy.
I do want to add, some look as confirmation as a graduation. This could not be further from the truth. You are now at the beginnig of lifes journey in Christ and his Chruch. It was as Pentecost that the Church was born and from there we go forth to proclaim Gods Love. What gift of the spirit God while grant unto at confirmation as yet is unknown, but what joy in receiving it.

Rachel,
Sure it’s okay. I’m simply saying that as a general rule, a Catholic should be attending primarily his own parish. There are plenty of situations where this might not happen (like people who have certain work schedules just for example); so please don’t read too much into this. You can attend Mass anywhere you choose in any Catholic church.

No, I wasn’t thinking of Confirmation as a sort of graduation. I knew exactly what Confirmation is and how serious this Sacrament is 🙂
I just got home a bit ago and flipped on the webcam for St Martin of Tours and see a Mass going on there now, at 4pm, not sure what it is exactly. I thought on Sundays that the 12:30 Mass was the last of the day, or is it because of Pentecost?

Thank you FrDavid 🙂 I just don’t wanna mess up or do anything wrong.

Hi,
Im sorry I did not mean that dierected toward you, I tend to get off on tangents from time to time.😉 It was more for others reading these post. My brother was confirmed at age 42, 2 years ago and the non catholics in the family would refer to confirmation in that away. I went to RCIA with him and a couple of converts at the begining also this out look as they asked the question, “So we will be graduating the on Holy Saturday?” They were quickly corrected.

I think that they were holding a May procession service at 4. the EF 12:30 is the last Mass they list as offered on Sundays.

It’s fine, I didn’t think anything bad about what you said, I just wanted to make sure you knew that I knew it wasn’t some graduation or whatever and that I took my Confirmation very serious 🙂
Ahh yes, I remember them talking about the May procession… Bummer I wasn’t home in time to drive there. Yea, I even looked in the bulletin to see if I could figure out what was going on at 4pm and nothing was there.
Hey, guess what I got yesterday from the Archdioceses … a book about all the parishes in the diocese it’s pretty cool, with the history of each parish and everything 🙂 – it’s called ‘Like a Mustard Seed Growing’

That is cool, I wonder if there is a way to get copies?

If this gives anyone comfort, I go to my current church (the one I am registered in) on Sundays and sing for their adult choir (it is an Anglican Use personal parish), and sometimes attend their bible studies, socials, etc., etc. I go to the local Maronite Catholic Church from time to time for both Mass and confessions. I go to another parish for confessions (and sometimes stay for their Mass) and still another for their confessions (but don’t attend their Mass). I go to my territorial parish----never-----and contribute in no way at all to its subsistence, though I used to go to confessions there—and am not even in the parish registry there.

LOL I had to look it up. It’s one of the ones when looking at local parishes that I thought was very pretty… I’ll tell you mine if you want in a private message 🙂
Aprivate message is fine any time about any thing please feel free.

k, I’ll send you one. I just don’t want to advertise all over the net what parish I go to, I have some not so nice folks very angry with me (mafia types)… I’ll explain more in my PM 😉
