I happened to be searching for something on the University of the Incarnate Word and found this youtube video

youtube.com/watch?v=13IxdziCWNQ

I assume it’s okay since the Sisters agreed to it, but it really made me feel uncomfortable. I think it was after a “Lunar New Year” Mass. If it took place after the Mass is it okay?

“and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they began to speak with divers tongues, according as the Holy Ghost gave them to speak.” (Apostles 2)

One does not speak by mouth alone.

Right, but they also said that these children were from the Buddist Temple, so I didn’t get the impression that they were there to be evanglized as in the case of the Apostles. Also since they (the Buddist) children were brought to the Catholic church, who was evangelizing who?

Have you not heard? It is not only allowed but in fact it is encouraged because it celebrates the diversity of the Church! Every culture should have a spotlight in the Church, no culture is superior to another.

Bygone are the days of Western imperialistic liturgy instead the liturgy is about celebrating each other in communion…

But hey, focus on the Eucharist, I’m OK, your OK.

These Sisters of Charity are not Mother Teresa’s Sisters of Charity. You can visit their website at www.sistersofcharity.org
The order originated in Texas. The following is from their website (underlining is mine).
Retreats
Throughout the calendar year we offer longer retreats for religious and others who are able to take time off to do so. Six-day preached retreats feature a daily group conference; eight-day directed retreats allow persons to visit daily with a spiritual director. We sometimes modify these retreats as to length, and optional prayer opportunities such as art journaling, Tai Chi or yoga are offered. Daily Eucharist is celebrated at all of them.

Just because Sisters agree to something doesn’t make it OK. (We have some Benedictine Sisters here who support women in the priesthood.) I think the whole thing was weird.

I’d rather they offered Chai Tea and yogurt.

Your sarcasm is of high caliber. I was actually bamboozled for a moment before I realized 🤷

Yes, it would be a stretch to tie the act, whatever it is, to Catholic teachings, whether it’s ok or not.

If their point was to convert the children from their pagan practices then I guess it was ok.

If the children were Catholic, it might be able to classified as a form of incultration. In their defense, It didn’t look like Mass was being celebrated while they were dancing, and about 3/4 of the way through the video they did almost appear to bow ( twice I think) before the tabernacle.

I’m personally not a big fan of liturgical dance but I have seen it have beneficial effects on some palliative care patients. (It just seemed like it drew much more attention from the patients than the actual Liturgy of the Eucharist did). Things that divert our attention away from Jesus in the most Holy Sacrament of the altar make me feel “uncomfortable” too Monica.

Oh yeah, I just discovered today - the day I watched the video, is April 23rd - the feast of St. George the dragon slayer…how funny is that?

Exactly. Though I thought some of the comments below the video (intended to be funny, I presume) were spot on about seeing themselves in/behind those costumes.

I hope that’s what it was. I think raising your child pagan, is a cruel punishment.

I just think this is what parish halls were made for.

Do some people enjoy it and find it positive? Sure. Does it creep people out (including me)? Yep.

I say, leave the church for the Mass, and everywhere else people can be inculturated.

In Montreal, there is a Church called the Chinese Catholic Mission. It’s in the center of downtown. On several occasions I’ve had the opportunity of attending Mass there early in the morning.

Apart from the Mass being celebrated in the Mandarin or Cantonese idiom, it’s pretty well identical. I could tell where we were in every part of the Mass (although I missed out on the benefits of the sermon…no dragons, snakes or dancers either).

Too bad we couldn’t get their opinion on this subject.

Liturgy implies the liturgical calendar…and the Holy Eucharist is the source and summit of our faith…better not to take too many liberties in this respect. Our primary concern should always be for our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament.

Several Quotes from St. Peter Julian Eymard:

“Happy is the soul that knows how to find Jesus in the Eucharist, and in the Eucharist all things.”

“Let us never forget that an age prospers or dwindles in proportion to its devotion to the Holy Eucharist. This is the measure of its spiritual life and its faith, of its charity and its virtue.”

Where was this? In San Antonio? My, my, they certainly have gotten liberal since the last time I was there…and that was about 28 years ago!

Yes, it is San Antonio. From what I am hearing, they moved the “older Sisters” away from campus and hardly consult with them any more.I hear that they aren’t consulted on what is going on.But that is just what I hear, so take it for what it’s worth. The “younger Sisters” are very liberal. One is a Liturgical dancer.
