I dont know where to ask this question. I just asked a friend of mine to join my family and another friend for dinner.

Sorry, my head is spinning from her reason for rejection of my invitation. When she asked me who would be there I mentioned a friend I have known for nearly two years now, and who is also a member of a certain group in the Catholic Church I dont want to name but is legit… She (a Catholic, and an EMHC no less!)
told me she cant believe I am still friends with her after her warning me about This group (apostolate) and that she wont go because she says its not a Christian group. But it is. Its most definately approved by the Catholic Church. John Paul ll approved it and its still offically approved.

I think her saying such a thing is a violation of at least one if not multiple things.

Am I right in thinking she is committing a sin in saying this stuff and likely breaking church laws too?

I told her that her comments are questioning the Church’s decision.

She told me that the Church was wrong to allow them to begin with.

Can she do this?

I wouldn’t worry unless there are other things that bother you. She could just have personality problems for example.

If this group is, as you state, in good standing and explicitly endorsed by the holy father, then she is committing calumny against them.

I do not know about any violation. I would have to say “No” to that. But if what you say is true (I am not doubting you, only quilifying) then the one friend has a problem with Church athuority. Have you ever had an indication before she was like this?

Calumny, right! And I dont see how a Catholic group can not be Christian, its synonomous! And it seems like an affront to JPII and to our current Holy Father!😦

Well, I am off to go to dinner now with my family and my friend.

I will take my CCC with and highlight the calumny part and copy it so I can remind my other friend how serious speaking like this is.

I never heard her say anything else to raise my eyebrow, but for some reason she really is objectionable to this particular group, and to call them not Christian seems like an indictment against the Church to me.

My friend that is the object of this rejection is used to this though.

Ever since that stupid movie came out.

I think everyone concerned ought to sit down together, and at dinner would be very appropriate, and read together John’s gospel, the Last Supper discourse, particular the parts where Jesus pleads for unity among his followers.

Therein lies the real issue.

She is allowing a movie and other secularly generated articles to carry more weight in her Catholic heart and mind than the magesterium of the church.

Does she realize how presumptuous that statement was??? SHE is certain the Catholic church was wrong? Based on what authority can she make such a statement? Perhaps she doesn’t realize how crazy that position really is.

I understand her confusion, and that’s all that it is. Help her to recognize that. Validate her concern because it is real and comes from a good place in her heart. But then show her how the information she used to reach this opinion of the Church’s position on the matter was based upon secular information.

Remind her that there are certain RC parishes being led by some rather wayward priests. That if others were to judge the entire RCC upon their visits to those masses certainly they would walk away with some erroneous ‘confirmed’ impressions about the RCC.

Such is the same with this ‘group’. The magesterium of the church and the pope sanction this group ‘overall’. The secular movie/articles focus on the ‘frays’ and point to those as THE ‘group’. This is not only unfair, but she should be able to see how she is purposely being misled into questioning and rejecting the magesterium of the church. Certainly she is wiser than to allow herself to be sucked in by the mainstream media on this matter. Perhaps that will help her snap out of it.

It is certainly ok for her to be cautious about this group. It’ is certainly ok for her not to seek out or participate in the group. But it is not ok for her to spread falsehoods about the group and openly defy the magesterium just because she has personal reservations.

What does she truly know about this group? Has she read the excellent book that came out about this group written by a non-member of this group? She can’t miss it, the name of this group is in huge letters across the cover. I find that most who have concerns don’t know even a percentage about this group.

Hehe. Is there are reason nobody wants to say… Opus Dei? It’s not THAT hard to spell! And the albino assassins have an awfully loaded schedule these days. Too busy to worry about a generally friendly internet reference! 😛

I had a good time last night at dinner and I wish my friend with misconceptions had been with us to really see someone personally that is a member to know how very normal they are from firsthand experience.

Lots of very good advice here for me, and hopefully one day they will both meet and this whole thing will be behind us and we can all learn from each other how much we can share and realize we are all part of a big family, the Catholic Church who is big enough for all of us to belong together happily.

I really think we all (Catholics) need to avoid getting our teaching from the media instead of the Magisterium of the Church. By media teaching I refer to items such as the DaVinci Code, the recent “discovery” of Our Lord’s tomb etc. If we’re talking about Opus Dei,let’s say so. It’s a personal Prelature, ( the only one I believe), and these are authorized by Canon Law. If the Holy Father gave the group approval, that approval remains in force unless the current Pontiff changes, or modifies it. Individually, we might not be interested in Opus Dei, or even like it all that much. Some folks probably don’t like the Knights of Columbus. They are, however, recognized by Holy Church. While respecting the right, and even the duty, of the media to inform, and the right of the entertainment industry to do that, I again suggest we let the Church, through it’s Magisterium , instruct and guide us.
