Don’t forget Gods infinite mercy and Love that exceeds all understanding.

I do not think I have the answer. I see something in the CCC and, as far as I am able to interpret it, it seems to point to a certain answer.

If this is not the correct answer, then I would like to understand how and where my interpretation is not ok.
You didn’t supply enough information to make it crystal clear that:

A. The person committed a mortal sin, which requires three things. . .grave matter, full knowledge, and full consent of the will.

B. The person did not, prior to the moment of death, make a perfect Act of Contrition.

Since we cannot know whether the person did indeed knowingly commit mortal sin, OR that he did not repent through an act of perfect contrition, WE cannot state whether he has chosen hell.

682 When he comes at the end of time to judge the living and the dead, the glorious Christ will reveal the secret disposition of hearts and will render to each man according to his works, and according to his acceptance or refusal of grace.

I don’t know if the question fits the section; if not, a mod please move it to the apropriate section.

On with the question. I understand that missing Mass is a mortal sin. So here’s a situation:

A certain person leads a good life, believes in God, tries hard to do good things, to help others, to preach the Gospel. He reads the Bible, goes to church, goes to Confession, receives the Eucharist.

However, one particular Sunday he doesn’t feel like going to Mass. Perhaps he is just tired, perhaps he has had a nasty experience last Sunday, perhaps he decides to say some prayers instead.

The next day, he dies in an accident, without having confessed the sin of skipping Mass.

Is he going to Hell for all eternity ?
Nope! 🙂

Personally, I go for what Jesus said about judging others. I also believe what PuzzleAnnie posted. So, if you are willing to say that you can miss Mass and still go to heaven how many other sins are you willing to throw out? Gosh, can a mass murder go to heaven? If so, I am not sure I want to live next door to him in heaven.
Absolutely a mass murderer can go to heaven if they confess their sins and repent. We know that God allowed a thief who reviled and insulted Jesus to go to heaven.

How can you say that the person is not going to hell?
How can you say that he/she is going to hell ?
If you cannot say that he/she is going to hell, he/she is not going to hell.
Mas was created to be happy with God.
Cheers:shrug:

No one can say if someone goes to Hell or not, that is not our perogative. However, if by us not being able to say yes or no, this does not change the unfortunate fact that some people are condemned to Hell by their own choices. The judge is God who is Just and yet Merciful at the same time, yet it is His just judgements in light of their lives that condemn a person to Hell.

God bless.

This is one of the most common logical fallacies that a person can present. So you are saying that if we cannot absolutely prove that God exists (and Benidict XVI made that statement) then God cannot exist?

Your statement affirms that if we cannot say that someone is going to hell then the person will not go to hell. The Church also stated that we are not to know who is going to hell, and so from your axiom we must follow with the conclusion that nobody goes to hell. If nobody goes to hell then we have universal salvation and the Church is wrong and Jesus lied to us. This is not what Catholics believe.

There is absolutely no possible way that any person can determine is another person will go to Hell. According to all that we are taught as Christians, EVERYONE is capable of salvation.

Even Adolf Hitler COULD have felt horrible remorse at what he had done, at the last moment, and asked God for his forgiveness. he was raised as a Catholic, so it is possible that he COULD have asked for forgiveness.

We do not know, and speculating on who might or who might not, be condemned to hell is a silly exercise.

We are NOT God, and we do not have access to the necessary information.

Objectively speaking, if one dies in a state of moral sin, they are eternally separated from God’s glory; they go to “hell”.

Subjectively speaking, we (humans) don’t know who falls into that category since we don’t know all the mitigating circumstances.

I do, however, feel that we have defaulted to much to the “we don’t know” part and fail to speak the objective truth that Christ gave us through His Church. It is much more charitable to tell people the objective truths so they can measure it against their own situations.

Pax Christi.

And, in light ot The Old Medic’s previous post, the objective truth, as taught by the Church, is that I might find Hitler in Heaven, provided he did a perfect act of contrition right after he took the cianide, and at the same time, my father could be in Hell for failing to attend Mass in the last day of his life…

All of the sudden, this starts to sound quite… strange… to say the least.

Yes, you might find your dad in heaven. I am sorry to hear that your question was not simply a made up example.

God bless.

dude. he’s going to heaven. too many catholics are a bunch of retards who think laws lain down by men are absolute as to god’s ultimate decision. Do you really think that the being who has done so much for us already would randomly screw one guy over for one minor mistake in a long good life? NO. so ignore the rules, follow what truly matters.

We cannot say that anyone is in Hell. Not even Judas, Hitler and so on…
cheers, 🙂

We can say with absolute certainty that those that died in a state of mortal sin go to hell.

What we cannot say is who exactly is in that state.
Only God can make that determination.

I think I said that in what I said. I do not know why you quoted me and said what you said. I never stated anywhere we could say who is in hell or not.

God bless.

Of course not. Why? Easy going to Mass isn’t like going to a gymn or having tuition for total number of hours in predetermined days.

Its not punching a card like workers do in factories! God doesn’t take a register of who’s present and who isn’t every Sunday!! And going to Mass every Sunday doesn’t make one holy if he sees it just as a utilitarian thing i.e. I go to mass God is happy and isn’t going to punish me! That’s not how Faith works. One is 24/7 a Christian not just on sundays for a couple of hours! What He looks at is a heart of a person!

What is worse going to Mass for fear of going to hell (hypocrisy) or not going but loving Him? One can feel like not going because he doesn’t like the priest, he’s ill, misses it or whatever.

Point I’m making is that God doesn’t care about church attendance the priest does (for economic reasons mostly yes the offering at the end)! What God cares is belief, love of Him. that’s it. We are living temples. God isn’t just present in churches!! He’s all around. If you see Him only in churches fine Saints see Him in everyday life and around them outside churches as well. 👍

don’t worry about the guy. I’m sure he’s with God now if what you say about him is true.😉

Don’t know where you got the skipping mass is a sin from. Its not like missing gymn lessons. If you miss gymn lessons the gymn teacher is angry. If you miss mass the priest and not God is “angry”. God knows what’s inside your heart and doesn’t care about appearances! Those were pharisees who did. Your heart must be pure if your heart is the rest is as well! Sacred Heart for one reason!!!

Boy its like a protestant forum here! lol Maybe its because there’s too many around and too much proselytism from them. Damn its hard to be Catholic in a protestant or communist country! 😊

I aint saying you don’t have to go to mass either! 🙂

Luke123, you obviously have no problem being a Catholic and teaching against the Church. I would recommend you learn your faith before trying to teach other Catholics. I even question whether you are Catholic. Going to Mass on Sundays is required of the faithful. They are HOLY DAYS OF OBLIGATION. What part of that is hard to grasp?

So people who don’t go like in this case go to hell? It says to sanctify the holy days! Going to church is one way of sanctifying them but not the only way.

If one doesn’t go to mass on Christmas but spends it at home with his family, etc he is committing a deadly sin and shall go to hell if a lightning bolt strikes him down when he’s out in the balcony smoking a cigarette?

Come on. Its worse than protestant fanaticism of the sorts: “Christ will come back soon, and we will be raptured and his kingdom will be of 1000years!!!”. And uncharitable to say the least.
