I have heard about places (buildings) that are haunted and commonly have visits from ghosts. Well, what I am wondering is can this happen to a person??? Ever since I was little, I have always seen/felt things when there was nothing else there. I used to think that it was just the house I grew up in, but recently I have been living elsewhere and I am having some of the same experiences (only they don’t seem to be as often or as ‘strong’ as they used to be, but it is definitely the same type of thing). So, I guess I was wondering if anybody else has heard of something similar to this???

It depends what you mean by ghosts. When people die their souls are immediately judged (The Particular Judgement) and they are either condemned to Hell or saved and go to Heaven most likely via Purgatory.
There is no such thing as a soul which has not crossed over due to unfinished business. They are all saved or not immediately after death.
Sometimes, for reasons unknown to us, God might allow us a glimpse of a soul in purgatory but they don’t communicate and they don’t wander around on earth.

Hauntings or lingering spirits most likely are demonic in nature. Jesus and many of the saints have encountered demons and demonic possessions. The demons may be the fallen angels of Satan or maybe the condemned.

Some souls (in Purgatory or Heaven) may return briefly but do not haunt particular places as such. These are usually referred to as apparitions. Jesus, Mary and other holy people have been known to visit various people. Usually on brief intervals, (although Our Lady has been said to visit some folks regularly).

I think the big difference between demonic ‘hauntings’ and apparitions by saints (or souls in Purgatory) is in the nature of the visit or overall feeling or mood of the encounter. In one, a sense of evil, fear or foreboding is present, in the other a feeling of great peace and goodness prevails.

I know of two very close friends who have encountered the later. In one case my friends mother returned shortly after she died to comfort her when she was very young. It was a one time encounter, and it never happened again. In the second case, one of my friends, who was hospitalized in very critical condition, was visited by another friend who had died a year before to assure him that Heaven was exactly as they had expected.

In both cases no fear or terror was felt. Sometimes God allows our loved ones to return to comfort, encourage, or reassure us that death is not the nothingness that some people imagine it is.

There have been saints or other folks who have heard from souls in Purgatory asking for prayers or indulgences. What we Catholics can do here and now to alleviate the pain and suffering in Purgatory, is immeasurable.

We should always remember the dead in our prayers. We too may need their prayers when our time comes.

Well, ever since I was little, I grew up in a house that was haunted. Most of the time, there was never a distinct feeling of something good or of something bad, but it was more of a feeling of just another person. Then, as time went on, the feelings I started to get from it was that it was something bad/evil/harmful–with more time these feelings became present whenever the ghost would ‘appear’. The particular one/ones I have encountered have never done anything particularly harmful, but, rather, scary. I used to think it was just the house, but recently I moved out, and I am still feeling/experiencing/seeing the same things. I don’t know if this is helpful toward anybody, but, as always, any/all thoughts are appreciated.

Lilone…If you are Catholic I recommend the use of Holy Water.

Sprikle some in each room of your house of apartment each morning, and pray for protection from evil.
Also dab a little on yourself. Demons and condemned souls are known to flee when Holy Water is used.
There are also published (and church-approved) prayers for protection from such things.
Also, as a rule, the more praise is given to God in a location, the less likely that devils will linger there.

In our city paper when I was a teenager (about 20 yrs ago) there as a story about a real haunted house. The police were summoned to a house for a disturbance. Then, the police contacted the Archdiocese. It seems that objects were flying around the rooms. The priest who handled those types of things (I assume he was an exorcist) went out and blessed the house. I don’t know if he did any deliverance/exorcism prayers. I remember being very impressed since it made the conservative local paper. Both the police officer and the priest were quoted by name.

Lilone, you may want to have your home blessed as well. Demonic possession or demonic influence are very real (and very creepy).

I understand “ghosts” to be a ploy of satan to distract and make one question their beleifs. It is to my best understanding that all spirits, souls, whatever have a purpose and destination, in life God will work through them as he can, then in death they go to hell, purgatory, or heaven. This transdemensional spirit thing is just a distraction. You say you sence things, well you probably don’t think of God, but of trapted souls maybe. To ignore the feelings and confide in the beleif of God and his works and don’t worry about it.

When we first moved into the house we are living in now (4 years ago) it had been standing empty for some time and neighbor kids told my oldest (then 8) that the house was haunted, and he claimed to have seen something in the house at nighttime. (No one else did, but I’m not discounting the possibility, even though I do believe “ghosts” are demonic presences). Due to circumstances w/ the previous house (the owner didn’t want to fix the roof, and we were getting serious leakage due to rain–we were renting the upper flat in a 2-family house), we had moved into this one earlier than originally planned.

Well, we went to our parish, and our priest came over to bless the house for us. Whether or not my oldest son really did see anything, he did not see anything ever again after the house blessing.

Holy water–can’t recommend it enough.

lilone,

I would like to affirm the advice given about holy water and having your home blessed.

Other things that have definitely helped in our home is having it consecrated to the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, don’t forget to have their pictures in a prominent place in the living room and bedrooms, too, preferably.

Along with that try to say a family rosary together around the same time every evening or morning before going off to work or school.

Also, remember not to watch movies or t.v. shows that promote evil or dabble in the Occult. And it goes without saying, do not listen to music that would open doors to evil thoughts or spirits.

As scripture says, we are temples of the Holy Spirit. It is important that we try to keep our bodies, minds and spirits as clean as possible – after being given such a Gift (the Holy Spirit) let us provide Him a “welcoming” home.

All of these aids really help during stressful and confusing times. If you continue the prayer routines long after the stress has passed, you’ll find that Peace will abound in your home and it will become a spiritual sanctuary for you and your children.

God Bless you and may the Sacred Heart of Jesus hold you in the palm of His hand.

Peace be with you!

A friend of mine gets those “feelings” sometimes, too. I wasn’t with her this one time, but she, my girlfriend and another friend were telling me about it. They were going to have lunch at a cafe that they had never been to before but had been wanting to try it out. My friend said that something was wrong there, that she had some feeling, and that they should leave. Later they found out there was a place on the second story of the same building that did psychic, taro card stuff. Then just a few weeks ago we drove by a funeral home that was one of those old, scary-looking houses. I jokingly said that it looked like a house that was haunted (just because it looked like one of those houses from a scary movie) and my friend said, “Yes, I think it is.” She got one of those feelings again. I guess her mom gets those kind of feelings sometimes, too.

So anyway, it is entirely possible that you could be the kind of person that gets these feelings sometimes. Here is a website about different kinds of ghosts that you might find interesting.

Here is something that my wife and I experienced . The weird thing is that it was also viewed by millions of others on National TV. I remember it was in September about 4 years ago. We were watching “Good Morning America”(Prior to Diane Sawyer flipping out). Anyhow they showed a video taken from a security camera at a L.A. tow lot. The camera panned to a car that had just been brought in after a fatal accident…There was a lumnious figure that was semi- transparent that was frantically running around the car. At first I thought I missed something and turned to my wife to ask her what she thought…The look on her face was of complete shock! I am sure that there must be some way to go back into the archives to verifiy this, but to this day I still am baffeled by what we saw!

One of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is Discernment. The closer you get to God, and if you pray for this gift, you will find that you will be able to sense “good” and “bad” a lot easier. Evil is around us everyday (as well as Good) but we sometimes cannot know it if we are not in a close relationship with the Lord.

This gift of discernment is very valuable to keep you safe spiritually. Those “feelings” are sometimes God’s warning for us to not participate and to just be aware.

What we feed our minds and spirits will produce “fruit.” Fruit will have an effect in your everyday life. What kind of fruit you produce will depend on exactly what you’re feeding your mind and your spirit.

If you listen to, watch a video, or participate in things that are contrary to Church teaching – you will definitely “reap” what you sow. There is no such thing as an evil act being “harmless.” It always is, therefore repentance and reconciliation are always necessary as we grow in the Lord. Good fruit comes from feeding yourself good things spiritually.

I know this probably sounds preachy, but hey, I’m a mom – what did you expect?

My phychiatrist (who supervises my medication) has a theory that seeing flickers of things out of the corner of an eye, that are gone when you look directly at them, is symptomatic of bi-polar disease.
