Is this product name inappropriate?

This is probably not the best sub-forum for this question, but I couldn’t decide where it should go…

Anyway, I’ve developed a new design for a gold sluice combined with a concentrator in a single flow-through system. This is equipment for small-scale gold mining. The details aren’t really important…basically the miner would shovel gold-bearing dirt and gravel into the top and the system would remove everything but gold nuggets and gold dust.

My question is whether it would somehow be wrong from a Catholic moral perspective to call this system “The Gold Genie”, since genies (or jinn) seem to represent demonic spirits?

I don’t see why it would be. The word’s become ingrained in the English language and plenty of other products do the same. At this point, the word’s practically grown another meaning of “a product which makes a job easier”
 
No its OK in my opinion. The Church also used words that have been used by false religions. For example “Pontifex Maximus” comes from the roman religion, but the Church did not fear to reuse it.
 
I sure hope not. Otherwise, the Diaper Genie wasn’t as much of a God-send as I thought it was! 😃

A related question: This new invention is a combination of several existing technologies, at least one of which appears to have a patent, and others that just say “patent pending”. I truly believe my invention is “novel” because it does something that none of the other products do. And it’s “non-obvious”, because otherwise someone would have built it already.

My question is whether it would be immoral to manufacture and sell this product since the holder of the one patent I could find will most likely claim infringement. I believe I could defend my claims in court if it came to that…but is that the moral way to go about it? What would the other options be?

In order to avoid future litigation, you should get the advice of a patent attorney before you sell anything. If you only sell 5 Gold Genie’s, no one will notice, but if you make it BIG, then people will come out of the woodwork to get a piece of your pie. I would also seek a patent for your own invention.
