Hi, in school (about a year ago) i chose ancient history as a subject to study for 2 years (thinking it would be about the classical ages and Egyptians and romans, which it is but) there was a whole term on evolution! (i was kinda ignorant) although i do not believe in evolution. I did listen to what my teacher was saying (having absolutely no effect on my faith, just so the teacher didn’t get mad at me and i had something to do) . When the test came along i basically said i’m not doing it and didn’t show up. they told me i had to do, so i just answered 1 question and sat there for 60 minutes looking at the wall. Would listening and signing up for this subject be a mortal sin?

Catholics are allowed to believe in evolution. There is no conflict in that with Church teachings.

Hi again flamez3!

Catholic are permitted to believe in evolution. But even if we didn’t, I don’t think taking a test would be rejecting God as you are merely being tested on your understanding of the material. It in no way implies you necessarily believe it.

Just to clarify…Catholics are allowed to believe in evolution as long as they acknowledge that at some point an immortal soul was infused in the bodies of our first parents. The Encyclical “Humani Generis” explains this.

True, thanks for the clarification.

You do not say how old you are and if this was high school or college. If you were paying for the class, it was silly to not take the test and fail. It was a waste of money. In high school, I am sure failing impacted the overall GPA, which could impact college decisions.

As others have stated, evolution is not in conflict with Catholic teachings. You are not required to believe in evolution, but there is no harm in learning what others think it is and think about it. That is how one gets educated. It is rather difficult to argue either for or against evolution if you do not even understand what evolution is. The test was just some questions to see how well you understood the material, not whether you believed it.

Once you get to college (assuming you are not there now), you may take other classes in subjects you do not necessarily agree with. That is OK. You are learning what they teach about those subjects and how well you UNDERSTAND them, not necessarily BELIEVE in them. Do you understand the difference? Heck, my kids took social justice classes in high school they could not stand and did not agree with, but they did the work and earned As.
