Is this sacrilegious? Or scrupulous?

Hey is handing out blessed items and sacramentals to strangers sacrilegious? Concerning sacred things…? I’m new to the faith I wanted to know because we have a food drive and homeless people come in to our parish 4 a free lunch and I thought it was a good idea to slip in blessed rosaries miraculous medals and wanted to hand out blessed candles encouraging them to use them while if they feel the need to pray. I understand another parishioners point when she approached me she said that these items were for people that know what they’re use was for such as friends or family and people that are interested, but my point of view was as long as I can get these people to come in contact with anything blessed and carry it on their person even if this homeless person were to throw out the rosary my perspective was hopefully somebody will find it and pick it up as long as it gets out there I tried to explain to a few of them what the rosary was and how to pray it hastily I also slipped in a pamphlet but I was just wondering if I should continue trying to hand out rosaries in this fashion to people in the hopes that they might just be curious enough to roll it around in their hands what do you think?? Let me know if this question is just ridiculous thanks

You should not give anything blessed to a person unless they understand about blessed objects being treated with respect. For example, a blessed object can’t be just thrown away if you don’t want it any more. It has to be buried or burned. It’s not appropriate to be dropping it in the street. You don’t just say, “oh well another person will find it and the blessing will transfer to them”.

I would suggest that if you want to give medals and rosaries to random homeless people, you give them unblessed ones. An unblessed one is perfectly okay to use. The rosaries and medals that are handed out for free in churches are not blessed. If a person, including one of the homeless people, wants their item blessed, they can go and ask the priest themselves (some homeless people I know do frequent the churches and know the priests).

And if you think it’s important that these homeless people benefit from a blessing, then the appropriate thing would be for a priest to come and bless the people, themselves, not give them a bunch of blessed objects that they likely aren’t going to properly use.

You’re a new Catholic and did not mean to do harm, so I’m not seeing a need to confess it. Just take the advice of your parishioner friend, and hand out unblessed items going forward, now that you understand more.

Would you confess this if you did this though cause those rosaries probably aren’t being well taken care of
