A close family friend gave me a plaque that says " wash your hands and say your prayers, because Jesus and germs are everywhere." She comes over often and asked me already if I hung it up in our bathroom. I must admit, I think the saying is cute, but I don’t know if it isn’t disrespecful.

What do you think? Is it disrespecting Jesus by saying he is everywhere, like germs?

It seems like a lighthearted way to remind people to pray. And in fact it’s basically a true statement. Jesus is in at least as many places as germs, though for a different reason.

I too think it’s cute. My sil gave me a plague that reads: “Jesus is coming: LOOK BUSY!” It’s hanging next to my desk in my home office. It’s a clever reminder that makes me smile each time I see it.

I wouldn’t describe myself as ‘conservative’, but I wouldn’t display that - it’s just a bit inappropriate, IMO. I can see that other people might find it cute, but it’s an unnecessary juxtaposition.

It’s always a problem when people give things they like which are intended to be displayed/hung on a wall in someone else’s home. The thought is kind, but home decoration is a very personal matter.

Nope.

Anything that makes fun of something holy is sacreligious and against the commandment honour the Sabbath day, which means also; do not profane what is holy.

Oh good grief! The saying isn’t making fun of Jesus and germs aren’t holy. I don’t like sayings in my house, just isn’t my style, but I’m not going to go so extreme to say that this is sacrilegious.
Do you have problems with scruples?

Yeah.

It’s really up to you. I don’t think it’s sinful to display it. If you don’t like it, just thank your friend for it and put it up when she visits and take it down when she leaves. 🤷

I have a sign that says:
No b------- in the Kitchen.
It rhymes.
😃

Yes, calling it “sacrilegious” is taking it too far. So if the OP wants to put it on her wall, she’s not committing a sin by doing so. That said, I think people who buy home decor as gifts need to be prepared for the receiver of the gift to prefer not to display it. And they need to be prepared to not have their feelings hurt if the person doesn’t like their gift. Everyone has different tastes, and unless you know exactly what the person likes, that’s the risk you take when giving such a gift.

This is so true. Someone bought the parish secretary a sign that said “Nobody notices what I do until I don’t do it”. She had it up fro years.
The new pastor came and thought is was HIGHLY inappropriate and unprofessional. Caused them to get off on the wrong foot. There was tension ever after that.
When we got another pastor, she put it back up. 🤷

I’m a minimalist when it comes to decor. I don’t like “junk” lol. People who know me knows that unless I have specifically asked for something, decor will be sent to the thrift store. 😊
If a friend gets sassy because you didn’t put something that you deemed as tacky up, then that’s their problem. Lol.

Wow, what a little sign can do.

I’ve been on the giving and receiving end of these situations and it’s gone badly both ways so many times, I finally decided to just stop buying decor for people. The only person I buy decor for is DH’s sister, and that’s just because I know exactly what her favorite thing is.

Yeah, people need to be mature about such things. Ideally you’d be able to say something like, “Hey, Barbara, I appreciate you thinking of me and buying me this neat little wall hanging. The saying is cute, and you know, art without words is really what I like most.” Since the gift is really about the person receiving the gift, the giver should be grateful to know what to do differently next time. But things just don’t seem to work that way. Can’t say something like that without someone get offended.

What’s disrespectful about a plaque saying that Jesus is everywhere? If Jesus saw it he would probably smile!

Worrying about it does sound a bit scrupulous.

If you like the plaque, go ahead and hang it up. There’s nothing wrong with it.

Perhaps some would think this okay, but others might think you are laughing at religion when they see it.
I wouldn’t care for this myself, but would it think it best to suspend judgment when I saw it.

IF anyone wants to buy me a fleur de lis, I’ll be happy to display it. 😃

And NO, I’m not from New Orleans
It’s a symbol of the Virgin Mary!

Definitely not a sin.

Otherwise, a matter of personal taste.

I’m all for the Fleur de Lis myself and am not from La.

My dad’s folks lived in France until the late 1800s 🙂

I would love a sign like this, but of course, I hope that by the time my kids would be old enough for me to display, I hope they’ve grown out of most of that sort of behavior. 😉 We do have a kind of unofficial family motto that “You get what you get and you don’t get upset” (right now mostly applied at dinner time…sigh…:p)

My sense of the sign in the OP is that it’s not my taste, but I would probably laugh if I saw it in someone else’s home.

(And Miss Manners says recipients of gifts are under no obligation to keep or display gifts - just to thank the giver graciously. It’s rude to inquire about gifts you’ve given, as well.)
