Me = 2nd yr college student.

Situation = a while ago i downloaded a physics solutions manual off torrent *it’s an electronic one with all the solutions for all the chapters in the text.

Question = am i sinning in using this electronic solutions manual?
i mean, there are some people out there on the web selling a bunch of these for some $$, however, i don’t know exactly the copyrights/intellectual rights associeted w/ solutions manuals…*

As an engineering student, this is a moral dilemma that I confront a lot. There are two issues here as I see it:
  1. The solutions manual is not a free document, at least from what I know. Instructors usually have the option of buying it; some do and some don’t.
  2. If the solutions manual is not an approved resource or an open document to all, it should be cheating. At my college, unapproved possession of a solution’s manual is a major academic violation. I’m talking about a multiple semester suspension. Although this can only happen if it is proved that you have it. This can only be seen if a grader notices or if the problem was altered and you used the solution from the manual.
I’ve seen a lot of people do it (Physics and Engineering courses especially). My suggestion is to get the Schaum’s outline for the course. There is no dilemma because you paid for it and anyone has access to it, unlike solution’s manuals which are for professors only. I have found the Schaum’s to be hit or miss depending on the course and instructor, but it’s better than a suspension.

I don’t suggest torrenting either. It’s too easy to get viruses these days. I by no means have clean hands in this whole digital file sharing movement. I need to bring that up the next time I am in the confessional.

Good luck with physics; that’s not an easy one.
