Is this sinful?

I feel pretty embarrassed to be asking this question, but I am a bit on the OCD side and really need to know the answer.

I am a fitness freak, and workout as much as I can in my spare time. Well, about a month ago while I was in the middle of some intense abdominal exercises, I discovered that I could achieve orgasm. I was not touching myself or doing anything improper, and so it was shocking when it happened. I did some research about it online, and discovered that women who have very strong pelvic muscles (like myself) are sometimes able to experience this simply through tummy tightening exercises.

This happens almost every time I’m working out and focusing on my abs, and I have become really worried that it is sinful. I am not doing it for the pleasure, but I am concerned that by continuing on anyway, I am committing a sin.

I feel so silly to be asking this question here, but I don’t know what else to do or say. I don’t want to be freaked out every time I exercise.

Thanks for listening, and sorry for the tmi. lol

This sounds very, very unusual. I am not a workout fanatic, but I’m pretty familiar with exercising. There are lots of abdominal exercises that don’t require the use of pelvic muscles at all. If this is recent or happened with new exercises, I would suggest going back to what you did before. It’s okay to have fitness as a hobby, but if it’s presenting an occasion of sin for you, maybe it’s time to ease up.

If you have OCD and/or scruples, run this by the mental health professionals and/or spiritual director who help you with these issues.

No, it is not sinful since the pleasure is not intended at all. Still, you should try to find a different way of exercising your abdominal muscles so that this doesn’t happen, but it is not necessary. If it becomes an occasion of sin, then you should stop.

It sounds like a sign to redirect your workout attention to other areas of your body. I know that abs can become an obsessive focus for gym fanatics because I listen to my daughter go on about it all the time. Gym is my kryptonite so I don’t understand it but I often remind my daughter that the abdominal region of a female is the first home of her future children. Women with overdeveloped ab and pelvic muscles are more at risk of breach and caesarian because the baby is unable to turn. There’s also a higher risk of diastasis recti (separation of abdominal muscles) due to extreme inflexibility.

As an exercise physiologist and 2 months away from being a physical therapist I say be thankful for your pelvic floor health. As a Catholic I suggest finding other exercises that don’t cause this. Is it with static holds or dynamic exercises that causes this?

Exercise is morally neutral. It is not a sin to exercise, so you are not sinning. Be at peace.

Are you working out at home or in a public gym? I can’t help but think wouldn’t people notice if you had an orgasm?

Some dudes at the gym grunt enough that a hoard of looting Visigoth barbarians wouldn’t get noticed.

Working out is not a sin; you’re simply looking after the body God gave you. If a particular exercise results in you having an orgasm, accidentally, that’s OK. If you repeat it, causing another one, that’s masturbation, which isn’t OK.

So I think the solution is simple: make some changes to your exercise plan to eliminate the trigger.

Not sinful so far. But can you conceive of the possibility that the orgasm might seem an attraction, something to be strived for at some point, ultimately a reason to favour that exercise. Thus, there are moral risks best avoided.

Precisely. She keeps repeating this exercise, despite (because?) of the fact it causes her to reach orgasm. IMO the moment she knew that it triggered climax, she should have changed her exercise routine to eliminate it. She must definitely do so now.
