Is this sound according to Catholicism & scripture?

Hi. I am not sure if this is the correct forum to ask this question. I thought about in media but since I want to know if it is theologically sound by Catholic teachings, I put it here. Please move to wherever it needs to be.

My question is PBS’s’ “From Jesus To Christ” OK to watch or is it a waste of time? I don’t want to watch anything that is does not follow Catholic teaching.

I don’t have a clue, but I say go ahead and watch it. Personally, I enjoy watching/hearing alternate points of view (that’s why I’m here!). It will either A: reinforce what you already believe when you see the other side’s arguments; or B: give you something genuine to think/reflect on. Either way, you win.

If some of the content/facts seem questionable, research it yourself, or post specific questions here for discussion/corroboration…

I have not seen the program, but having read a Christian review of it, I’m fairly sure it will not be “theologically sound by Catholic teachings”.

I side with most on this issue with the exception; If a person is not strong in the faith, does not have a solid foundation, can not discern good theology from bad or when stuff presented may act to undermine a belief, then the presentation of error may consume thier faith. The media has a way of presenting a show as ultimate fact. There are many. And of course the next show will contradict that show with it’s version of truth. -and on and on

I don’t know, so I will let the more knowledgable answer your question, but it is good that you look to others to approve the information you take in, this will protect you from heresy. I think if you cannot get an answer here you should go to your priest and ask him for a list of approved tv viewing or you could record the program and ask him to watch it first and then approve it for you.

My thoughts almost to a T!

While some good info may be contained in secular shows about religious topics (and the visuals are almost always much better --and easier-- than reading it out of a book or hearing about it), the uninformed and impressionable may be led astray by much of the unfounded speculation presented as fact in these types of shows. The purpose of these shows is only partly to inform --it is also to entertain. It is never intended to edify or strengthen you in your faith.

And that’s OK–it’s not a religious television network, after all. We just need to consider the source, and keep in mind that revealed Truth trumps entertainment and speculation.

Better to read a Gospel …and 'Jesus of Nazareth" by Pope Benedict XVI …etc.

but i have not seen it…

and it would depend too on the person watching it…on their grounding in the Faith etc…

i know when ever i turn on one of these shows – my wife and I get angry at them…

Thank you for all the responses. I was wondering from the perspective of wasting the money to purchase the disks from PBS as I’m not sure when it is on next. I am a convert & studied in depth & am confident in my conversion so am not worried about being swayed; I just hate wasting money. I have watched some programs that are just so far off base on some things that I am cautious. I had wondered if some here had watched it & could let me know.

Again, I thank you so much for your answers. I think I found some links (haven’t checked them out yet) that I can watch it on the internet for free to find out more about it.
