Is This Superstition?

Every time I run upon an evil image, such as a pentagram, or creepy looking images (either as someones avatar on YouTube, or another website, or an unrelated image on Google images), I search for the Shroud of Turin on Google images, and pray the Saint Michael the Archangel prayer, a Hail Mary, and a few other prayers.

Is this Superstition/OCD? Do I need to do this after seeing such images as pentagrams, or demonic looking images/faces? :confused:

This is becoming a hassle, as many people on YouTube have creepy avatars with disturbing faces and the like (and I don’t even watch creepy videos), and many Google searches for accordion images cause a creepy looking goat/demon face to appear. :eek:
 
No you dont need to do that!..what if you are in a place with no access to internet and see a creepy image?..you wouldn’t be able to google then…

If it makes you feel better then say a prayer for your own protection and pray for the people who put those images online, and pray for those who may come across those images while online…especially those who may be led astray…

I’ll continue saying the prayers, but I will stop navigating to the Shroud of Turin. My reasoning for the Shroud of Turin was that I figured that if there were demonic images, I could go see a Holy image to clear my mind.

I think that’s a great custom. It’s not superstitious so long as you don’t believe that you are compelled to do it or else you’ll sin.

Right. I agree with the others that it isn’t something you need to do (particularly if you struggle with scrupulosity or OCD). But I can see it being a nice pious practice to cleanse your spiritual palette after being subjected to unwanted images.

That said, it would probably be easier to just get a holy card with the image of the Shroud on it. Then you can just look at the card instead of relying on Google. Or even just gaze upon a Crucifix hanging on the wall and say the name of Jesus.

That depends on your motivations.

If you’re doing it because you see that someone has a diabolical avatar, and that therefore their soul is probably in jeopardy, then it’s a very charitable thing to pray for them in some way. It’s perfectly charitable to want to pray in order to make reparation for such evils, and it’s very wise and prudent to pray for protection from diabolical influences.

If you think that seeing such an image, all through its own power, will make it almost impossible to avoid extraordinary demonic influence, then yes, that can be superstition.

I think it would be best to simply make the Sign of the Cross and move on. Your profile states that you’re in RCIA, and so I’m not sure whether or not you’ve been baptized. But for the future, the best protection against the demonic will simply be to live a Catholic life, to stay close to the Sacraments, and to avoid sin. A person in the state of grace need not worry overly about demonic images, but even then it’s wise to say a small prayer or an ejaculation like May the Most Holy Name of Jesus be infinitely blessed.

And by the way, I just love your YouTube channel! 🙂
 
I cross myself and ask the Lord to have mercy. I grew up doing that, habit of old Catholics.
