Maybe…maybe not.

The Church gives us good direction regarding mortal sin (from the catechism) so that each of us can make our own determinations, as best we can. For those who struggle with this due to scruples, the appropriate course of action is to find a regular confessor/spiritual director with whom they can address their ongoing concerns. Their spiritual director is the appropriate person to help guide them in discerning their sins. Their spiritual director may give them a rule of thumb…even along the lines of the quote given…but it needs to come from the spiritual director, not externally.

A scrupulous person does not need an external “rule of thumb”, they need a regular confessor.

Well if you have committed a mortal sin, then I see no reason why you wouldn’t be willing to swear on a stack of Bibles that you did. I’d be willing to swear to anyone who asked that I did indeed ride my bike for an hour and eat a hamburger for dinner today. It’s just a fact.
