there’s this certain verse that says this world belongs to Satan. (forgot the book, chapter and verse but it is in the NT)

my question is, how are we Catholics to understand this? is this world really satan’s? just a question though thanks in advance.

Hi, there.

You are likely speaking of a handful of instances where Christ implies that Satan has undue influence over the world, and as such, rule over its inhabitants.

One example is from John 12:31: Now is the time of judgment on this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out.

But it’s important as Christians to see what Christ says next:

And when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself.

Satan is merely a fallen angel, a creature of God’s. He cannot create anything but deception and distrust. Satan didn’t even create hell; that is a state where those who reject God will reside in torment for eternity.

As such, while Satan’s influence is heavy on the world, as Christ indicates, the Son of God’s power is true power, not mere persuasion. God is far superior and, eventually, He will trump any deceptions of Satan by the spread of His gospel to man, to the ones who choose to listen freely.

In his temptation of Christ Satan offers
8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them; 9 and he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10* Then Jesus said to him, “Begone, Satan! for it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’”
Matthew 4:8-10. One may note that Jesus does not deny that Satan has them to offer.

HENCE: Friendnship with the WORLD is ENMITY towards God.

HENCE: Those who are in Christ JESUS have crucified the flesh …and live unto God…

HENCE: “You have no power over me unless it had been given to you from above…” Said Jesus

HENCE: “All Authority on heaven and earth has been given to me” Said Jesus

Hence: I say, " fear not"

Some more verses for you…

I don’t know the Bible as well as I should but I would have to say that Satan is alive and well on planet Earth. I would be really interested in what some Bible scholars would have to say on the subject.

That’s one thing that puzzles me too, how could Satan offer Jesus the kingdoms of the Earth if it weren’t his (Satan’s)?

how does the catholic church view the world? like getting involved in worldly affairs, war and politics?

I want to clear this because pacifists tend to hit us with these verses the most.

I think it is the teaching of the Church that Adam surrendered the world to Satan when he chose to follow Satan’s words rather than God’s.

I think it is also taught that Jesus’ sacrifice voided Satan’s possession, but we are in the midst of the battle to dispossess him of it.

I don’t have a reference for that but have heard it from credible sources. That is, I don’t offer it as a required point of Faith, but tend to go with it until someone offers a better explanation.

And so Pilate asked Him “art thou a King” and Jesus answered “yes but my kingdom is not of this world” - twinc

2 Corinthians 4:4
In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

CHRIST is the LANDLORD, Satan is only the tenet farmer. Christ can and MOST CERTAINLY WILL resume position when it is the approiate time, according to God Eternal Plan.

When Jesus Christ was born unto this world through the Blessed Mother. He became of the FLESH. He was to suffer as a human as all men suffer. He was therefore subject to the same temptation as man. He came here with the sole purpose to die for mans sins. He chose to die on the Cross. And he really suffered on that Cross, you could best believe that. But from the time he came, till he left, he taught the word of God. What he could have done and what he did do are two different things. He clearly understood his state of being and purpose. And because he lived the word he preached, Satan believed he could temp Christ. But this “is” GOD we are talking about. This is his world, he created this.So really Christ is putting himself in “your” shoes. Then showing you how to live and deal with life, temptation, etc. All the while through humility, poverty, hatred. The more you study Christ the more amazing you realize he is. Hes GOD.

…
So do you suppose that Satan is honorable and truthful? Was the serpent truthful in the Garden of Eden?

Satan:

NT
a murderer and a **liar **and the father of lies (John 8:44)
**unclean spirit **(Matthew 12:43)
**power of darkness **(Colossians 1:13)
god of this world (2 Corinthians 4:4)
the prince of this world (John 12:31 & 14:30 & 16:11)
the prince of the demons, Beelzebub (Matthew 12:24, Mark 3:22, Luke 11:15)
the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the disobedient (Ephesians 2:2)
a demon able to enter into a human body (John 13:27)
the **angel of the abyss **(Revelation 9:11)
the dragon, the old **serpent **(Revelation 20:2)
a great red dragon (Revelation 12:3 &12:9 &20:2)

OT
the serpent who tempted Eve in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:4 & Genesis 3:14)
Satan (1 Chronicles 21:1)

+1 it was Adam folly that gave the devil’s dominion over the world but it was Christ victory at Calvary that destroyed Satan’s hold on this world

Again his pride and arrogance that we will think he rules again and thus his final defeat.
There earth, heaven, were never his to rule

Satan’s world[this world]and his works will perish and a new world will be created as it was in its original pristine condition before The Fall - so its a question of attachment for friendship with this world is enmity with God for heaven and earth shall pass away with a big bang for a man.s enemies are from his own household and this is attachment and he who loves father or mother or sister or brother more than God me is unworthy of God - for my kingdom is not of this world of materiality and physicality etc - twinc

But notethat Jesus does not question Satan’s ability to deliver the kingdoms to Him.

We know from scripture that Satan is a liar. What he told Eve was a lie. It is consistent that what he tells Jesus is also a lie. Jesus corrects Satan when he tests him, giving the perfect scripture each time.

Devil: Say to this stone that it be made bread.
Jesus: Man liveth not by bread alone, but by every word of God.

Devil: If thou therefore wilt adore before me, all shall be thine.
Jesus: Thou shalt adore the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

Devil: If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself from hence. … He hath given his angels charge over thee, that they keep thee.
Jesus: Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

Satan, being the best liar, knows that any lie must be mostly truth. A complete lie is usually rather obvious. The trick is to tell mostly the truth, but add just a bit of spin - like the cyanide in the Kool-Aid. No one would drink straight cyanide.

In responding, Jesus does not dispute the truth in the statements, but nails the spin that makes it a lie.

John 8:44 –
“You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and he stood not in the truth; because truth is not in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof.”
