Is Thomas More evil?

I heard from a video on YouTube by Stephen Fry that Thomas More burned people alive because they wanted to own a Bible in English. Is this true?
It was part of a segment in which he was debating whether or not the Catholic Church was a force for good and I would disagree with the majority of what he said, it’s just that this bit struck me.
