Is Using Contraception a Mortal Sin?

If I check the weather report prior to going to the beach did I “render” my beach day sunny?

Did the meterologist, in using advanced equipment to correctly determine a sunny day, “render” the day sunny?
Going to the beach, to my knowledge, is not a subject the Catholic Church has made any moral proclamations on. It therefore is a wholly invalid analogy, clearly. No one has submitted any moral truth claims as to the permissiveness of visiting the beach on a sunny day or a rainy day.

That is simply inaccurate.
Please explain how. Your actually arguing that taking temperature, checking vaginal secretions, etc. are not deliberate, are not “actions”, are not done “in anticipation” of the marital act, or not done with the intent to render the act infertile?? Take a pill, examine your cycle indicators…these are clearly actions, and we know WHY they’re undertaken. The difference is the Church says one is accepts le, the other never.

"In Kenya, in the 1980s, an African who had learned that the Western fertility rate averaged about 1.2, remarked to me: “Western couples must be *very poor *if they can’t afford to have more than two children…”

Nope …looking at some chart or taking a temp --is about knowledge.

NOTHING is done…ABSOLUTELY NOTHING is done to cause (render) the martial act infertile.

Round and round…

The likelyhood of conception is not the issue. The act must be ordered toward procreation, in an objective sense, regardless of the subjective state of the people involved.

Your arguments remind of the “gay” arguments that claim if they can’t “marry” then infertile couples should not be married. It misses the entire point. That a couple is subjectively infertile does not mean their marital embrace is not objectively ordered toward procreation.
Please explain “in an objective sense” here. Because if likelihood of conception has no bearing, it seems condoms, just “pulling out”, or the pill still meet the criterion you’ve outlined here. Since as others have said, plenty of babies have resulted from these methods failing.

You can live decently without two incomes.

It is the definition of “Decently” which has become distorted. A $60,000 SUV with heated seats and DVD system, granite countertops, consuming 4000 calories per day and carrying ten thousand in credit card debt is not living decently, it is living decadently.

It’s pride, instead of driving a Ford Escort and not worrying about having the latest minivan.

Doesn’t this line exclude NFP as well?
Do you honestly think that the Holy Father would contradict himself, and Pope Pius XI in Casti Connubii?
There is no conjugal act in abstention, and in using the infertile period for serious reasons the spouses are not acting against any natural law simply using the God-given infertile periods provided without taking upon THEMSELVES to place an artificial barrier. Do you know of any law of God or of His Church which forbids the conjugal act during the infertile period? Do you not understand that “in matrimony as well as in the use of the matrimonial rights there are also secondary ends, such as mutual aid, the cultivating of mutual love, and the quieting of concupiscence which husband and wife are not forbidden to consider so long as they are subordinated to the primary end and so long as the intrinsic nature of the act is preserved.”? (Casti Connubii, Pius XI, II, 59).

Rejected by these objectors is Christ Himself:
“You are Peter and on this rock I will build My Church.” (Mt 16:18)
“The gates of hell will not prevail against it.”(Mt 16:18)
“I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of heaven." ( Mt 16:19)
“Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven.” (Mt 16:19)

Sole authority:
“Strengthen your brethren.” (Lk 22:32)
“Feed My sheep.”(Jn 21:17).

What these contrived objections show clearly is that the “Catholic” objectors choose to reject Christ the Son of God when He emphatically gave His Church His authority to teach in His Name. For them there is no truth only wishes, desires, views, prejudices, culminating in “I will not serve” whenever it suits ME.

That is why I mentioned weather. (obviously the church has no teaching on weather morality, that was not the point)

One observes the weather. One can observe the weather very accurately by using different instruments. Weather occurs whether we observe it or not. We don’t render a day sunny

Fertility is cyclical for a woman. Observing the cycle does not render it infertile.

This is truly an insult to people who, for whatever reason, really CAN’T afford more than 2 children… 😦

Right now, my husband and I can’t afford ANY. We have no health insurance, are paying off college debt, and are both working so that we can afford the one bedroom apartment we live in.

FYI, that post itself was a derail from the thread’s topic, people already already complained about it, and the conversation has moved on from that discussion.
Sorry, yes I saw that in reading, but when a thread generates 12 pages in around a day it’s hard to keep up!

Or like swimming in a pond when there’s been sufficient rains or snow-melt versus erecting a dam to ensure the pond will be full when you want it.

This seems a little extreme, I don’t know about where you live, but where I live a decent home’s gonna cost you around $300K. School loans for advanced degrees cost around $60-120K, depending on if you get some partial scholarships…I don’t own a $60K SUV, I drive a mini-van, I’m an avid amateur body builder but even I don’t eat 4000 calories a day. I have no credit cards…it’s still very tough to make a go, with five or more kids it would be unmanageable. Though many certainly do pursue material things as a minimal standard to life, which is twisted.

Insult? No insult.

I was providing an interesting quote for perspective.

Oh, it’s that easy huh? Thanks for the tip! Except you seem to not realize that in today’s world, in advanced societies, finishing school and starting work means for plenty of folks being 28, 30, or even older. Then how long to meet that special someone, since you couldn’t do it before this very well? A year? Two? Maybe more…with this advice many, those most intelligent and ambitious in life anyway, won’t need to worry about ABC at all, they’ll be nearing pre-menopausal before even marrying! And I suppose be in Steve Carrell’s boat as in 40 Year Old Virgin. Maybe it’s past time we as a society honestly confronted the near impossible obstacles we now have erected to preventing what should be natural and normal? There’s a reason young people are terrified of pregnancy early in marriage and having “too many” kids: our social order, especially in the U.S., is completely unsupportive and often outright hostile to it. You can’t live decently without both spouses working full-time, child-care is exhorbitantly expensive, living expenses for basic food and clothing and housing continue to rise while working wages and median income has been flat for 30 years, or decreased when taking into account inflation…seriously, to those posters here of a certain age, being a young adult today is NOTHING like it was in 1970. I know I frankly would love to have eight, ten kids, but is the Pope going to chip in for child-care? Cause Uncle Sam sure isn’t, and we’d be such a blessed family if we did have a basketball team of children that we’d be living with my parents…the Monty Python skit comes to mind where the father says to his, like, 50 kids, “The Lord has blessed us so much that we can’t afford to fed you anymore!”

But in a sad way your post has some sense: if everyone just remained virgin until marriage and didn’t marry until finished with school and in a career, many fewer would need to worry about ABC, already having neared natural infertility before even saying their vows!
This post makes me sooo sad!!!

There is a family in our neighborhood who has five children. They all worked part time, went to college and got good jobs. The oldest went to school to be an engineer. After he got his job he paid for the his sister to go to med school and then she paid for her the next one to go to college etc. They had a modest home but did not have a lot of money but they were happy and had each other. Sure they made many sacrifices but isn’t that what we are supposed to do for Him? When one follows God’s will anything is possible!

To add, neither one of us drives an SUV either.

My husband owns a 1998 Honda Prelude that repeatedly needs maintenance just to keep it running because it’s so old and beat up, and I own a 2005 Honda Civic that we are still making payments on.

Doesn’t really answer my question of “perspective on what?”

But alright. No need to proceed I suppose.
The very poor African had a very good observation.

It can spur our (I assume we are mostly here in the West) reflection.
