Hey guys, so recognizing that I have issues with my OCD and with scruples, I can’t always tell the difference between sin and not sin or venial Vs. mortal sin. Today, I got a bit over emotional over a certain issue I have been having with my mom and three of my siblings. I started crying and called my little brother to talk. I cried with him for a while and told him what was bothering me about the situation. I was wondering, at what point does venting turn into a sin?

I agree with the previous comment: the “trash talk” is the other side of the fence, not speaking facts in a heated way. It is the moment you do injustice to the one that you’re venting about, that’s when you’re definitely sinning one way or the other.

If you feel like venting, it can sometimes indicate a larger problem. For instance, say a woman vents to her friends that her husband watches too much football. The real problem may be that she has asked him to limit his football viewing, but he chooses to defy her/not to please her. Counselling might help her, but venting won’t.

Venting is often an outlet for people when communicating with a person doesn’t work. But it’s better to communicate with the person giving you grief.

I vent when I’m too tired to problem solve. It’s better to problem solve, though.

On a forum, venting always leads to dissension between subsequent posters, IMHO.

I can’t see venting as a sin. There is no malicious intent in your speaking. Something has hurt and w venting w a close family member, Your pain lessens and you get perspective.
Now, you should have had prayer w your brother after venting.
If you vent w lots of ppl, that turns into gossip and dishonors the other person.

In your case it sounds to me like the worst it could be is a venial sin. Venting could turn into detraction but I think if you are revealing information to a family member for the sake of talking about your feelings (so talking about you, you’re really the focus of the conversation) then that’s not a sin if you reveal information in the process. Besides, your brother is likely to already know about the general issues your family has and the way they tend to react. I had a very similar mind battle myself. God is just and He is also compssionate, He doesn’t want you to hurt others but he also doesn’t want you to not seek help. I think there’s a fine line; don’t stress too much about crossing it because if you do you’ll go crazy just try praying about it if it worries you and try to focus such conversation on how their actions made you feel and maybe what a possible solution might be and avoid cursing them or stuff like that. I would like you to know my prayers are with you and your family and I can see that the situation must’ve been somewhat heartbreaking for you; don’t add too much thought of sin to it. Maybe bring this up the next time in confession if you feel worried, I hope you’re feeling better now. 😦
