Is Victoria's Secret evil?

It’s my impression that VS catalog is for women. I think it would be pretty doubtful that women get “turned on” by it. I also think if I were a woman and my husband spent a lot of time looking at my VS catalog, I would either take it as a hint or become concerned.

In my mind (granted, I’m perhaps more earthy than some…flannel pajamas for women should be banned outright) there isn’t a whole lot that’s illicit between married people, unless its not open to procreation at least at some point, or somehow cruel or hurtful.

Far be it from me to advise a woman of anything, but I say if you think it will put some zip in you and your husband’s intimacy, then I say go for it.

So are saying that wearing fancy/small underwear is wrong in general, even if it’s for my husband? Or are you saying I should boycott VS specifically because of the presentation of the items they’re selling, but it’s ok to buy that same stuff somewhere else? Please explain with more clarity, as I am not very smart lol 😛
What I’m saying is that God knows our hearts. And the devil knows our hearts. Whatever leads us towards God is good, whatever does not is bad. Victoria’s Secret is selling an image as well as lingerie. Department store underwear is not generally designed with an image in mind. Victoria’s Secret has a set image. For example, they recently did a fashion show on TV. Intimate apparel should be sold discreetly, not paraded on television. In that sense, Victoria’s Secret is not just selling lingerie but providing an opportunity for men to leer at the models wearing it. Not a good thing.

As far as buying the same stuff elsewhere, just ask yourself why you need it or want it. Nothing is hidden from God.

God bless,
Ed

With all due respect, no one needs to spend $300 at a spa. Around my area, one spa has the name Pure NV.

“every store”? I doubt Joe’s Trophy Shop qualifies, along with the local bakery.

God bless,
Ed
Ed, I’m not quite sure what Joe’s Trophy Shop is, but the bakery can be used sinfully too. Gluttony is one of the 7 deadly sins. I understand the point she’s trying to make here, and it makes sense, don’t you think?

Is it a sin to buy underwear/perfume/lotions from Victoria’s Secret? They try to make all their products very “sexy” and represent sex appeal. Is that wrong?
The depths of anything is holy and leads you to God (including sins and failures)…the surface of anything is usually profane/unholy.

Because I like the stuff they have. I think it’s sexy, and I think my husband would appreciate it too 😉

I know he won’t be thinking of the models wearing the lingerie when/if he sees me wearing it. Sure, they may be prettier than me by society’s standards, but my husband loves ME and is attracted to ME. Therefore it’ll mean a lot more to him if he sees me with it on… he won’t even be thinking of the other random girls who wore it. (Especially because he may not even know it’s from VS in the first place haha).

So yeah, I’m still not convinced that it’d be wrong if I were to purchase some VS. I still have not seen a good/logical reason as to why it would be wrong.

Not everyone wants to wear ugly big girl panties from Sears! LOL
:rotfl:

Just a thought…that should be part of pre-marriage counseling…the fact that sooner or later, guys, your wife is going to wear ugly big girl panties from Sears. lol
So are saying that wearing fancy/small underwear is wrong in general, even if it’s for my husband?
😃

Sorry, I read that wrong for a second…thought you wrote, “So you are saying that wearing fancy/small underwear is wrong, even if it’s my husbands?”

lol…I need to wear my glasses more often.

That would need to be discussed in a totally different thread.😉

I don’t think lingerie by itself is sinful – I know a lot of women who wear fancy lingerie not for the sake of a man but because they feel good about themselves doing so. Same with makeup, I actually don’t wear much myself but I don’t think wearing makeup automatically means you are being vain.

As to whether it is moral to support a certain company by buying products, well, I have known of self-professed Christians who find nothing wrong with buying lingerie in an actual “adult store” as in one that also sells porn and sex toys, using similar justifications, that they are not going to use the lingerie for sinful means and that, yes, their money might go to sinful people or help in the marketing of sin, but they could say that about pretty much any company these days. I think most would agree that buying something from a porn shop crosses the line and is problematic for other reasons such as occasion of sin from being in such a store and being tempted to buy porn, and also due to the sin of scandal, if someone you know sees you there and assumes you are there to buy porn.

However, is Victoria’s Secret morally equivalent to a porn shop? Edwest seems to think so, but I’m not sure. I think this is the kind of situation where individual conscience is supposed to kick in. I know some people agonize over whether it’s ok to buy anything from a store that sells condoms, or where the CEO is known to contribute to certain causes. Certainly, if you get too picky and choosy you wind up in the position where you’d pretty much have to go “off the grid” and grow all your own food, maybe plant cotton and keep sheep as clothing sources, etc.

Eewww. Granny panties! I don’t wear those at all even as a single person. Cute boy shorts or thongs are more comfortable than all that material bunching around. shudders I told my fiance that I would NEVER wear granny panties. I think that needs to be added to the vows. 😃

I feel the same way about wearing flannel and sweats to bed. Those aren’t sexy, and one my jobs as a wife will be the home fires burning so he isn’t tempted to stray. I’ve seen too many of my friends let go of the romance and sex out of their marriages, and then the marriage is over.

I might need to take out a Victoria’s Secret credit card.😛

I wish to say that in advertising, there is so much presently that is “sexually suggestive.” The format of certain advertising could be an occasion of sin, in certain hands - adults as well as the younger. That those in grade school can get their hands upon the advertisments and find them an occasion of sin, is not a good thing. I believe that lots of prayers need to be said for advertisers, who know that unfortunately “sexually suggestive” sells. I was rather shocked by walking in the mall recently, with a reason to get something, when I saw that the picture ads in front of some stores were rather seductive. And, they were not stores such as Victoria’s Secret!

No, definitely not a sin to want to do something nice, within the grounds of church teaching, for your spouse - if you can afford it and not get in debt doing it! It all adds up some day and in this economy, everything adds up! There is plenty that can be done creatively with healthy suggestions in good Catholic or certain Christian “Marriage” magazines. So, I guess I am saying, “don’t put yourself in the occasion of sin while browsing the catalogues” and if you are concerned about falling into the occasion of sin, perhaps stay away from the catalogues or online. And, don’t forget that online can end up sending into your search engine who knows what!

Their advertising is out of bounds. My husband has told me it poses a big problem to see the pix in the catalogs. They also send emails out-though I’m not sure how they get the lists. For men who struggle with lust, they are really inappropriate. I refuse to buy anything there knowing that the ads are such a problem for men like my husband.

Victoria’s Secret sells more than bras and panties, they also sell regular clothing that is both stylish and affordable. I’ve bought several clothing items there and you would never know that they came from Victoria’s Secret. 🤷

Pushing the envelope of what the public finds acceptable has been the motto of the secularists for some years now. Their goal? To desensitize everyone to deviant sexual behavior.

Victoria’s Secret is a problem. What do they sell? Underwear. And why is their underwear preferable to any other kind of underwear the wife could find at a regular store? Yeah, I’ve heard the ad slogans for this and similar businesses: “Surprise your husband. Add a little spice to your love life. It’s OK to be a little naughty with the man you love.”

That eventually morphed into Madonna wearing various undergarments on the outside as time passed. And underwear eventually morphed into a tiny piece of cloth with some string.

If you want underwear, then buy underwear. Don’t let a middle man, or woman, come between you and your husband. According to the American Decency Association:

“Victoria’s Secret sells lingerie in an inappropriate and immoral manner and therefore contributes to the sexual objectification of women and the desensitization of moral sensibilities.”

My point is, if you see something often enough, especially in public, it becomes part of the scenery and becomes unexamined. Victoria’s Secret is a threat to right thinking and morals.

I’m not sure I understand the difference between purchasing undies at VS as opposed to Macy’s, Nordstroms, or other places.

Macy’s has manequins displaying the underwear. 🤷

I purchased from VS periodically for about 20 years. What I notice is perhaps the quality is not as good. Years ago one could find silk, now it’s more polyester.

Actually years ago there would be men’s intimate apparel as well, silk robes, silk PJ’s I guess that market wasn’t very popular.

I don’t think historically VS invented pretty lingerie. I remember there being small privately owned lingerie shops. I remember buying a penoir for my older cousin’s wedding in one of those shops with my mom.

I actually think VS is modeled on those shops.

IMO, its not the lingerie that is sinful, but the way they advertise it in their TV ads and in their catalogs and in their “fashion show” that they have on TV once a year that is objectifying women. My husband can not stand their tv ads, in his opinion they are bordering on “soft porn”. When he was working in the high schools in a counseling position, the catalog was THE magazine to have amongst the boys if you get my drift. A few years back, the stores had their mannequins posed in bondage scenerios in their store windows at our local mall, try explaining that to a 6 year old at the time. Their clothes that they sell may be “fashionable” but it would be hard to find one that wasn’t immodest in public, let alone a pair of their sweats that doesn’t have something written on the seat of the pants.

If a married woman likes to wear their stuff for their husband, acceptable IMO. I had some of their “honeymoon” stuff myself when we first got married. But the way they use women in their advertising to sell the product, can be sinful and avoided IMO.

The inside of a VS store isn’t very titillating, although the life size posters in the windows often are, as is the VS catalog.

A woman at my office used to get the VS catalog, bring it to work, and share it with her male co-workers. It was always a big hit.

“I would like to wear lingerie that my husband will find attractive on me, and will make him desire me.”

Uhm.

Do you desire your husband more, or less, depending on the cloths he’s wearing?
We men are visual creatures, appearance matters a lot more to us (than women) when it comes to attractiveness, physical desire, etc.

Of course it does, you could use the bread to poison someone or beat them with a trophy.
