I don’t know much about Islam. so i’d like to ask our Muslim friends here a simple question. alot of Catholics are opposed to Islam because they say that violence is part of Islam, or that it is wirtten or condoned in the Qu’ran. Is that true? i don’t want to argue, only want to ask our Muslim friends what they have to say about it?

oh and one other thing if you don’t mind me asking, what is the core belief in Islam?

These teachings of the Quran should give you some idea!

Islam has several sources of scripture and near scripture that it uses. The Qur’an is the main scripture. Hadiths are collections of quotes from people who knew Muhammad. They recorded just about everything he did. There are many Hadith collections that are considered to be not authentic. There are also several that are considered to be authentic and used to augment the Qur’an. These are used heavily for things like developing Shari’ah law. For example the Shari’ah law for the mandatory execution of apostates come from Hadiths, not from the Qur’an. Here is a link to a very good and reliable source of Muslim Texts. I really like it because it gives 3 translations of every verse of the Qur’an and it provides a good search function.

As for whether or not violence is a part of Islam it all depends on one’s interpretation. There is indeed a huge amount of violence in the Qur’an and Hadiths. Muhammad and his people raided caravans, fought many battles… Over 80 in a 10 year period.

Muhammad had many people executed and assassinated .
Muslims say that this carnage was necessary to ensure the survival of Islam. Each person should look at the Muslim side of the story and the side of the story of those who were conquered by Muhammad resulting in the deaths, enslavements or being thrown off the lands that their ancestors had lived on for thousands of years.

Bin Laden and violent radical Muslims can justify every thing they do using the Qur’an and Hadiths. Peaceful Muslims can find justification for their stance. So how is this?

A person who finds peace in the Islamic scriptures has to believe that all the wars, assassinations, executions, etc were required to prevent the extermination of Islam and the early Muslims. They believe that war is only allowed when a Muslims are attacked or when Muslims are prevented from practicing Islam. So the question of those who say they believe in a peaceful form of Islam is do they consider Islam to be under attack by non-Muslims. Do they believe that there is a need for a self defense war against non-Muslims today. Many who I have spoken to from the Middle East will say that Islam is peace, but they have to fight us because we are the enemy… a bit of play on the words.
More radical Muslims believe the verses of the Qur’an that order all Muslims to fight all non-Muslims until Islam is the only religion in the world and until it rules the world. For example the reason the terrorists cut off peoples heads is because Muhammad say to cut off the heads of unbelievers.

Islam divides the world in two… the world of Islam and the world of war. Anyone who is not a Muslim exists in the world of war. Muhammad commanded Muslims not to take Jews and Christians as friends as we cannot be trusted. He ordered Muslims to fight us until we either convert, subjugate ourselves under Islamic rule, or are killed. Bin Laden for example believes that the non-Muslim world has attacked Islam (not just the USA but everyone). So he declared war on the USA in about 1995. He has ordered that either we convert to Islam or they are going to destroy us.

Personally I don’t trust any ideology that names the group I belong to as a perpetual enemy and says that their members are not allowed to be a true friend to me and those I care about. There is something very disturbing in this.

I suggest that you listen to what every has to say on all sides and then make up your own mind.

Violence is allowed in Islam only under specific circumstances.

Perhaps it is better that you watch this movie as there are scenes within it depicting violence between Muslims and their enemies.

Hopefully, you would be able to distinguish the nature of these circumstances in Islam whereby violence is not only allowed but in certain instances, even prescribed as well.

O9.0 JIHAD

(O: Jihad means to war against non-Muslims and is etymologically derived from the word mujahada, signifying warfare to establish the religion. And it is the lesser jihad. As for the greater jihad, it is spiritual warfare against the lower self (nafs), which is why the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said as he was returning from jihad.

The scriptural basis for jihad, prior to scholarly consensus is such Koranic verses as:

(1) “Fighting is prescribed for you” (Koran 2:216)
(2) “Slay them wherever you find them” (Koran 4:89)
(3) “Fight the idolaters utterly” (Koran 9:36);

and such Hadiths as the one related by Bukhari and Muslim that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said:

“I have been commanded to fight people until they testify that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and perform the prayer, and pay zakat . If they say it, they have saved their blood and possessions from me, except from the rights of Islam over them. And their final reckoning is with Allah”;

and the hadith reported by Muslim,

“To go forth in the morning or evening to fight in the path of Allah is better than the whole world and everything in it.”

09.1 Jihad is a communal obligation.

O9.6 It is offensive to conduct a military expedition against hostile non-Mulims without the caliph’s permission. (A: Though if there I s no caliph, no permission is required).

WHO IS OBLIGATED TO FIGHT IN JIHAD

O9.4 Those called upon (o: to perform jihad when it is a communical obligation) are every able-bodied man who has reached puberty and is sane.

Hi
Violance is definitely not a part of Islam; even the word Islam means peace, and peace and only peace is the real guiding spirit of the religion Islam.
Thanks
I am an Ahmadi – a peaceful faith in Islam bridging gaps between faiths/denominations/religions/agnostics
The West, as I understand, due to certain disinformation has seen only MullahIslam or MullahShariah; the true face of Muhammad’sIslam and PromisedMessiahImamMahdi’sIslam is yet hidden from their eyes, which is truly speaking only peaceful.

(continued from above)

“o9.8 The caliph makes war upon Jews, Christians, and Zoroastrians (N: Provided he has first invited them to enter Islam in faith and practice, and if they will not, then invited them to enter the social order of Islam by paying the non-Muslim poll tax (jizya) – which is the significance of their paying it, not the money itself- while remaining in their ancestral regions. (O: and the war continues) until they become Muslim or pay the non-Muslim poll tax. (O: in accordance with the word of Allah Most High,

“Fight those who do not believe in Allah and the Last Day and who forbid not what Allah and His messenger have forbidden-who do not practice the religion of truth, being of those who have been given the Book-until they pay the poll tax out hand and are humbled.” (Koran 9:29),

the time and place for which is before the final descent of Jesus (upon who m be peace). After his coming, nothing but Islam will be accepted from them, for taking the poll tax is only effective until Jesus’ decent (upon him and our Prophet be peace), which is the divinely revealed law of Muhammad. The coming of Jesus does not entail a separate divinely revealed law, for he will rule by the law of Muhammad. As for the Prophet’s saying (Allah bless him and give him peace)).

O9.9 the caliph fights all other peoples until they become Muslim (O: because they are not a people with a Book, nor honored as such, and are not permitted to settle with paying the poll tax (jizya)) (n: though according to the Hanafi school, people of all other religions, even idol worshipers, are permitted to live under the protection of the Islamic state if they either become Muslim or agree to pay the poll tax, the exceptions to which are apostates from Islam and idol worshipers who are Arabs, neither of whom has any choice but becoming Muslim.

O9.13 When a child or a woman is taken captive, they become salves by the fact of capture, and the woman’s previous marriage is immediately annulled.

I posted the law about violent Jihad from one of the schools of Sunni Shari’ah. All four schools agee on this. So it appears that one of the specific circumstances in which Jihad is allowed it to spread the Islam… gain converts and where people will not convert to either kill them or subjigate them under Islamic rule.

Shari’ah laws about the lack of rights of non-Muslims under Islam are very ‘enlightening’ too.

Excuse me, but Islam does not mean peace, it means submission!

belfarfalla,

good post!
Thanks, I’ve spend several years trying to answer the very question you asked. 9/11 was the event that made me got back and take a critial look at Islam. However, events in my personal life also needed answering. Part of my family is from Lebanon… Catholics who were either killed or driven out by Muslims in the 1900’s. The only ones who survived were the ones who fled. Additionally as a child, a Catholic living in Muslims countries, I witnessed the slaughter of several dozen Coptic men/women/children at the hands of Muslim attackers. Some of our friends were attacked in their home. They tried to attack us in our home but we were well armed.

Oddly, my dad just said it was Muslims. He never said one bad things about Islam as a whole. So my entire life I’d never thought of Islam as violent. But after 9/11 I wanted some aswers to things that quite honestly I had pushed out of my mind most of my life because they were too disturbing to deal with.

 that must have been terrifying!

Hell is the most violent place imaginable.

If Christians feel so much revulsion towards violence, then how do they reconcile the concept of a loving and peaceful God with their belief that He will send non-believers to eternal punishment in Hell?

Violence, however distasteful it may seem, is a part of the Truth and for someone to deny that violence is sometimes needed for Good to overcome Evil, would be to deny the Truth.

Why are you stating this, since the god you believe in says the same thing about us unbelievers??

And of course, to your way of thinking Islam is “Good” and everything else is evil so that justifies Islam’s continued path of death and destruction wherever it goes!

First of all, God doesn’t send anyone to hell… people who choose to reject God even after they know that he is God, send themselves to hell because hell is the complete and total absence of God and his love.

Second, violence is sometimes necessary, that is true. But as Catholics, the only time violence is allowed is when the lack of violent response would endanger and kill more innocents. Evil is evil and it must be fought… but the main goal always has to preserve human life (no matter which side). Have you ever read the tenets of the just war? Maybe you should see what we believe about just and unjust war… just a thought.

Hi
Even if all four agree they cannot form an alternative of Muhammad/Islam/Quran , and more so if they are misunderstood. For understanding the true concept of peaceful Jehad, if you have time to make research, kindly access:
alislam.org/terrorism.html
“As far as Islam is concerned, it categorically rejects and condemns every form of terrorism. It does not provide any cover or justification for any act of violence, be it committed by an individual, a group or a government… I most strongly condemn all acts and forms of terrorism because it is my deeply rooted belief that not only Islam but also no true religion, whatever its name, can sanction violence and bloodshed of innocent men, women and children in the name of God.”
(Reference: “Murder in the Name of Allah” by Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad, Fourth Successor to the Promised Messiah)
**Terrorism Jihad **
It is unfortunate that Islam, the religion of peace, hope, harmony, goodwill and brotherhood had been badly tarnished by the perpetrators of various terrorists acts and barbarism as seen on September 11, 2001.
This article is written to set forth the teachings of Islam so that manifestations of various terrorist acts are fully exposed in the light of Islamic teachings under whose shelter these activities are being committed.

Who created Hell in the first place?.. The Creator or the creations?

There is no question of who is sending who to Hell.

Muslims have no problem at all in accepting that God will be sending some of His creations to Hell.

I do not quite understand why Christians should hesitate in accepting this aspect of God since it is clearly stated in their own Bible.

God sends no one to hell. Hell is a natural consequence of rejecting God and his love for us. If you walk away from God, then you walk away from the love He has for you. Hell is the absence of that love.
