I’m an older Catholic convert. When I joined the church I started volunteering at the food distribution service they run from the priest’s house - I’m retired, so I have time to do it.
I’ve met so many great people who quietly give so much of their time and money without reward to help those who are struggling to make ends meet. The women that do my regular shift with me have become very dear to me, too. We only hand out simple food like sandwiches, cake, drinks and so on, but as I’ve got to know our callers at the door I’ve been reminded every single week not to take anything for granted in this world. It’s certainly a case of “there but for the grace of God go I”.
I certainly feel closer to my faith because of this simple act of service. I’d really recommend you get involved with something like this, if you can. I love going to Mass, but this kind of charity really focuses your mind on what it means to serve other people.
