Hello everyone,

I was wondering, is the desire to be someone’s husband a worthwhile goal, or is just selfish?

Even though I’m single and not currently dating anyone and don’t have a particular woman in mind that I know, for some time I’ve felt the desire to be a good, loving husband to a woman and do what I can to support her and make her happy, and fully provide for her so she doesn’t have to work.

Does the wish to be a husband count as something that is worthy Catholically as a goal?
Or is it just selfish that a man wants to do that?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

I can’t see in any way how it would be selfish to want to lay down your life for someone.

Good luck in finding the right woman.👍

It most certainly is a worthy vocation. Seriously - the extremely vast majority of men are called to be husbands and fathers. What you should do, though, is pray for your future wife, whoever that might be.

Being a husband is not selfish. Indeed it requires the heroic virtues. Firstly, you have to love the woman enough to be sure you would lay down your life for her. Sounds very melodramatic, but I consider it an essential part of the contract in being a man.
Secondly, thirdly and fourthly, you have to put up with her little ways, which once seemed so charming and soon become very irritating.
But more importantly you have to take responsibility for her care and the care of any children God is good enough to send you. Given these hard economic times this is no easy task. Most families find that both partners have to work, so no slippers and a hot meal waiting at home for the modern man.
You have to lead without oppression, love without remission, put her first in every decision.
Not a selfish vocation but with the right woman a very rewarding one. With the wrong one, you wake up one day a mug.
It is the natural vocation for most men and it is hard to achieve. But there is nothing more satisfying to know you have someone who cares more about you than any other, bar the children, which is right and fitting. Someone who has your back when the world turns against you. And someone who puts up with your once charming little ways that have become so irritating to her.

Each person has a 3-fold vocation.
  1. Universal call to holiness.
  2. Station in Life. (married, religious, or single)
  3. Personal Vocation.
I would say being a good husband makes a man pleasing in the eyes of God as he is fulfilling part of his vocation as a human being.

Many men will get married, but a large number of these men do a pretty lousy job of it. So, yeah, a man needs to be a good husband if that is his vocation, and to do that he needs to possess a number of things.

Fulton Sheen said there’s two kinds of love, for example, “need love” and “gift love”. The latter being the noble one. You can google it if you find the idea interesting.

God Bless!!!

It’s a vocation, and as a single person, I would suggest that you discern your vocation.

If you do that, your vocation, whatever it may be, will be worthy.

There is selfishness in that. 👍

I am curious. Did you think you would get a answer that said it was a horrible thing to be a husband and father? What is the purpose of your question?

While any man can be a father, being a good father is one of the most unselfish things a man can do.

However, there is a caveat if you want to be a good father and you care a lot about family, especially the one you’re about to have: you have to vet your prospective fiancee carefully. You’re picking your kids’ mother … and there is nothing selfish about trying to find the best woman you can find, it isn’t just about you, it’s about the kids you will have with her.
