Is war ever justifiable?

Throughout history, many wars have been fought in the name of Catholicism.
What is the Church’s view on the Crusades in the Holy Land?
And what about Christian Europe’s struggle against the muslim Turks around 1500-1700?
Could violence be righteous, if it was in defence of the faith?

I hope I’m asking this the right place.
