Is watching "FAMILY GUY" a mortal sin?

I am very familiar with that show. i tend to watch it. but it ridicules God, and the Church and the divinity of Jesus. If I were you, for the sake of your personal relationship with Christ, i highly suggest you stop watching it, but that’s just me.
Does it really? I never watched the show, but i’m curious as to what they say or show to display that ?

I think it intends to be blurry.

Do you have access to a thorough Catholic examination of conscience? After you’ve had a look at it, tell me if you can’t see that in the eyes of the Church, willingly being a part of blasphemy, to one degree or another, is a sin and would offend God.
Im so scrupulous I often miss work because I’ve worried so much I made myself physically ill, and yet no, I still don’t see what’s wrong with watching a show where a character says God d*** it. Which was my point, not a point towards the show of the topic.

Please, answer instead of just reposting the same thing you’ve already said. If it didn’t affect me the first time, it won’t the second or third

Saying over and over about the Catholic consciounce implies that if I don’t agree with you that watching a show that isn’t perfect is a terrible sin, I must not have a Catholic view.

Of course it’s a mortal sin. You should be watching “SOUTH PARK”! 😃

i really have to say that maybe of you ppl may be wrong.

Watching TV or movies that promote sex or violence is considered a venial sin.

then you are all saying that watching the wrestling and things like the young and the restless, sex and the city and baywatch are good as well.

young people are growing up with this kind of rubbish and think this is how they should live and many are really living this way from what the watch.

source, please.

Also, distinguish. What do you consider “promotes?”

thing that for example qagmire does. he may look like a funny character but the thing he does like sleep with all these women and he come across like a sexolic. he is giving bad example to people out bring a message out that it good to do these thing when in reallty it not

I would not know. I do not like the show. I sometimes watch the Simpsons, but that is rarely. I do have better things to do with my time. Like go to bed! It’s 1:43 in the morning and I have to be up at 7! 😃 Oh well!

No, that’s a laundry list to breed scrupulosity, to show how every single moment, emotion, thoughts, action and desire in your life is a sin.

Seriously, that’s one of the most ridiculously overzealous lists of sins I’ve ever seen. Can I breath? Can I even open my eyes in the morning without sinning? Doesn’t look like it according to this list.

Seriously? giving into depression? I guess mental illness is a sin now.

Also my dear, it says very clearly that it lists imperfections in this list right along with sins, with no distinction between the two.

Give me magisterium teaching, please. Until then, I’ll go with the worlds of JPII/ Even when they explore the darkest depths of the soul and sin, the artist shows humanities cry for redemption

3 times I tell you now; I ain’t talking about FG, because I don’t watch that show. But to answer your question, my goodness, if someone is so weak that they’re gonna go out and be a sexaholic because a cartoon character is one, they have issues mentally, not spiritually.

As for what I’m talking about generally, showing an action takes place =/= promoting the action. You DO know this, right?

i am not saying that you are promoting the action. the person creating the show, movie etc and what is in it are. however watching such shows is not good because there is always temptation which is placed within us that the devil will always use to make us fall.

Foe example if you watch a show such as sex and the city. the devil will always temp you with alot of impure thoughts and images, ect. also you are watching such impurty that you are allowing your soul to view such things. your eyes are the window to your soul. By not watching these kind of shows you are actually doing yourself a favour because you have less thing to temp yourself with.

you come across like somebody who stresses alot. Just like me at times i would stress over things and over think things and over anlize things working out the pros and the cons. remember that as long as God can see us trying to live better even thou we fall and commit sin if he can see that we are tring he will show us mercy. if we dont give a stuff about him and the ppl around us and we know that and he sees that then we are making things harder on our selves to be saved.

you will get better. just give it time. Pray to the holy Mary ask her daily to place you in her protection and ask her to help you with you problems, difficulties and decision making and so on and she will. things dont change over night but they will get better.

God knows that we are not perfect, he knows that we are weak and without him in our lives we are nothing. we must know that as well and i am sure that you do. Yes the bar is set high for all of us and it is not easy for us to be perfect in the way we live our lives. but we must try to live better then we can and I would think that God will be pleased with that.

remember god know us better then we know ourselves and the last thing he want is for us to loose our souls.

I sometimes wonder about CAF, I mean, really, some people worry too much.

Its like everything else out there, it has the ability to damage your relationship with God, but only if you let it. If you decide to watch FG instead of going to Church, then yeah, that’s not good.

As for me, its my favourite show, yeah, i raise an eyebrow or two when they start in on the God bashing, but EVERYONE is free game on that show, not just the Almighty. If you, OP, or anyone else for that matter, feel your relationship with God is so weak that watching a TV show will destory it, then don’t watch it.

There’s a reason the remote was invented.
I work in the media and there is currently an integrated campaign to make people laugh at sin and dysfunction. That was the whole point of the Jay and Silent Bob movies, to trivialize bad behavior by turning it into a joke.

The Bible tells Catholics to work out your own salvation with fear and treembling. That’s why there are billboards in the UK that read: “Stop worrying and enjoy life.” God and worrying about God just doesn’t matter.

There is a reason all Catholics should complain about a show that spits on “those values on which we used to rely.” Dysfunctional role models should not be confused with material that has a purpose. It’s like living on junk food. It’s not good for you.

I encourage everyone reading this to not only turn it off but encourage your friends to turn it off and to complain, politely, to the sponsors of the show that it is trash, it is offensive and that you will not buy their products if they continue to sponsor it.

Catholics cannot afford to be lukewarm. We cannot lose our sensitivity to sin by listening to people who say: Oh what’s the big deal? It’s just a cartoon." If you were in a position to write or draw episides of Family Guy, would you?

I don’t think it’s a mortal sin to watch but it’s definitely wrong to portray Jesus as cooperating with some pervert like Peter.

God bless,
Ed

I have to laugh reading this thread because it reminds me of my work environment at times. I get the feeling that some people are truly trying to answer the OP’s question and others are trying to justify watching FG and shows like it. And saying that they are bashing everybody (except Mohamed in South Park ) is like saying everybody does drugs, so it’s ok, right? I think not. I can only speak for myself in saying that I consider it a occasion of sin and like the prayer says, “avoid the near occasions of sin”. As for Fox, I’m not impressed with Hannity and O’Reilly is so/so but if I had to choose I’d take Fox News over CNN of HN any day.🙂

Sorry for ranting. Pax†

“Family Guy” is a show which does not merit a place on television.
That is obviously a subjective statement.

You have the right to decide which shows you watch or do not watch, as do all other adults. I am very selective in which TV shows I watch. Very often I use the OFF button on my remote.

True, my criticism of ‘Family Guy’ is subjective. However, I do not believe that the solution is simply to push the OFF button.
Code:
Sadly, millions of underage and impressionable girls and boys are exposed to such trash, partly because of parental irresponsibility, but also because parents are busy and cannot monitor everything on TV all of the time. And there is no effective 'parental control' option.

We have restrictions already on what may be shown on TV. For example, unless one subscribes and/or pays, outright pornography is banned as it should be. That may be subjective, too, but the Supreme Court (or someone on it) stated: "I know it when I see it." The question is: where does one draw the line? I believe that 'Family Guy' has crossed that line. It is especially shocking and hypocritical that the FOX network, which is always assailing liberals for their 'destruction of family values' - the home of Hannity, O'Reilly, and other 'defenders' of those values - carries "Family Guy".

Don't misunderstand me. I feel that I can watch "Family Guy" if I choose. I am a mature adult - a senior citizen actually. And the writing is clever and often funny. But my concern is with children and youth who can still be influenced in a negative way by such blatant defiance of basic morality.

Should it be censored? That is a touchy issue. But the public certainly has the right to contact sponsors, boycott sponsors, complain to channels, and in other ways fight the invasion of this garbage into our homes. Believe me, if it were a program lampooning Jews, Blacks, or various other groups it would never appear on TV - and it shouldn't. We the public should have considerable say about the use of the public airways.

Every Christian church I know would oppose much of what appears on "Family Guy".

Roy, thanks for your reply.

On the topic of censorship, I oppose the concept of censorship. The last thing I want is the government telling me what I can and cannot watch on TV. I trust the preferences and sensibilities of the average person over that of government bureaucrats.

But I believe parents need to take a much more active role in monitoring what their kids watch on TV. I take a very active role in that regard within my family.

Are you suggesting that you would allow porn on regular TV - and not censor it? Would you allow programs to promote the use of heroin or other illegal drugs? Would you permit the words that, fortunately, still cannot be used on TV? And we could go on.

I believe that a society has the right to set limits to civil discourse. That's why we have libel laws and such. I also believe that TV has a responsibility to the public and the public has a right to set limits. Otherwise, why not permit porn on the regular channels? It would have plenty of viewers. Now, I admit that setting the limits is not easy, but a limit should be set.

Regarding your first question, I am suggesting no such thing. The OP was regarding the show ‘Family Guy’ and that is what I was specifically referring to.

Your prior comment was that ‘Family Guy’ didn’t merit a place on TV. I was unclear if you were referring to your own distaste for the show, or if you were suggesting the show be removed be from the airwaves. There are already limits in place regarding what cannot be said or shown on TV. I am not in favor of relaxing those standards, nor am I in favor of tightening them. I do not view the current standards as censorship. However - again using ‘Family Guy’ as an example, if someone tried to use the force of government to remove it from the airwaves, I would view that as censorship and I would be opposed to that action.

Thanks for the opportunity to allow me to clarify my earlier comments.

Now imagine the flip side of your first sentence - that every moment is a potential moment to honor God, a moment to pray, to listen for Him.
