Is watching Game of Thrones a sin?

Is it a sin to watch Game of Thrones? Why do some Catholics say you can watch it with a “pinch of salt” especially when themes of nudity, violence, incest are prevalent? Also, lots of vulgarity.
 
Waste of time.

Take courses leading to an additional college degree.
 
IMO, Game of Thrones is more than just “themes of nudity, violence, incest” – I’d say it’s practically porn. There’s a reason it’s on cable and not a broadcast network…

Agreed with prior post that the show is a waste of time and there are better things to do with a free hour or two.

A show can portray something without endorsing it. I don’t think the takeaway from “Silence of the Lambs” was “you should go eat people.”

You can watch GoT, in my opinion, if you’re a well-formed adult who is able to differentiate between entertainment and reality. If you know yourself to be especially suggestible, maybe steer clear.

It sounds like it doesn’t bring one closer to our Lord Jesus Christ.
 
I confess that I watch Game of Thrones. I have enjoyed fantasy books for many years and have read a number of the George R.R. Martin books in the series that Game of Thrones is based on. I like the adventure, the special effects and the intrigue.
 
It’s the addiction where you have to see all the episodes which is the concern, not so much the porn stuff or the violent element jf you are a matured viewer.

Anything that competes for your time and attention against Jesus is always bad. I mean you would have to struggle to keep Jesus as the number one if He has competition in your life. That’s the problem with TV series unlike movies which you can see in your own choice of time rather that them dictating you.
 
I operate by the maxim of “garbage in, garbage out” meaning that what you watch, listen to, or read can eventually warp your perceptions and affect your treatment of others in a negative way. So it is a sin since it’s not a positive or edifying thing. Personally I’d much rather spend the time at daily mass, reading more old-fashioned fantasy authors, and hanging out with friends.
 
When I face this dilemma of whether or not to watch something I ask myself, would I be totally comfortable watching this if Jesus were sitting beside me? Would He be okay watching it with me? Are the guardian angels of the actors & actresses pleased with what they are doing/portraying?

I don’t know who says this but its incorrect… Yes i believe it is a sin to watch something like that. We don’t eat garbage so why are we putting it in our minds?

I don’t think this applies to impurity. I don’t believe we are to watch impurity ever. Furthermore if its like porn, which apparently GoT is, its a near occasion of sin hence a mortal sin to watch it.
 
I’m surprised that posters on a Catholic site are saying its not a sin to watch something impure. I’m sure everyone would agree that watching porn is a mortal sin. This is no different at all. It’s porn in a fantasy setting. Of course that’s a sin and very offensive to Our Lord.

In general, I find these topics can get a bit dicey, in part because the Church doesn’t provide us with a comprehensive list of popular media to avoid but rather leaves it to us to discern.

I understand how difference of opinion happens. We are so saturated with popular media (at least, here in the U.S.) that it’s like the air we breathe around us. It can be difficult for us to separate ourselves from it enough to render a truly impartial judgment. And I think it’s easy for us to rationalize. At the same time, there are instances where the portrayal of immoral things can be distinguished from the endorsement of those things. But sometimes we try to make a distinction here when there really is no difference.

How this applies to Game of Thrones, I’ll leave for others to determine for themselves. I’ve never seen it. I’ve known some good Catholics who like the show despite it’s moral flaws (saying they just fast forward through the bad parts). From what I’ve heard about it, I can’t see myself ever watching it—which is a shame because a fantasy tale of intrigue set in a Middle Ages type of back drop seems like exactly the type of show that would really appeal to me. I just can’t justify watching graphic, nude sex scenes no matter how many plot points it supposedly furthers. 🤷 If they release a sanitized “made for network prime time” version, perhaps I’d reconsider.

your going to have to explain how an occasion of sin is the same thing as a mortal sin. I think you may be overstating this.
