Is wearing a rosary around the neck wrong?

Is it wrong to wear around the neck? I do it religious reasons, but am I doing something sinful, I mean I know all the mysteries, and I’ve prayed the rosary as well as the Divine Mercy Chaplet. But is wrong to wear it around my neck? Should I stick to scapulars?

Hi David, it is no more sinful than wearing a chain with a crucifix around your neck, that is to say, there is nothing sinful about keeping blessed objects on your person.

As a child I was taught not to wear the rosary as a necklace. However, Louis de Montfort in his books True Devotion and The Power of the Rosary encourages people to wear the rosary, not to be afraid to be seen as “a peasant.” There is nothing sinful about wearing a rosary. I tend to wear mine under my clothing.

I often wear mine simply because I have a tendency to misplace important items like my medals, my money and my glasses. >.< It’s kind of difficult for me to misplace my rosary then, unless I misplace my neck.

I dont think God can be mad at me for doing so. He knows more than anybody else what a mess I can be. And there’s so many wrong things I could do that dont involve remembering him.

We had a priest when I was growing up who had been a chaplain in WWII, stationed in the South Pacific, in an area of very heavy fighting. Had it not been for the rosary, given to him by his mother when he shipped out, that he was wearing around his neck, he would have been killed. The center-piece deflected a bullet that would have gone straight into his chest.
This priest was awesome, and did a lot for the veteran’s in our community. He always told this story in his homilies for Memorial/Veteran’s day and I always thought it was a beautiful testament to his love our Our Lady and his mother.

Not wrong, but awkward. Although it forms a closed loop, it’s not jewelry or adornment. Wrapping it around your neck, however, is part of the habit of a religious order whose name I can’t remember now, but they wear it in a special way, wrapped twice around the neck. But wearing it around the neck has always been rare, among any segment of the Catholic faithful, and every other order I can think of that wears a rosary wears it tucked into the belt. (And the fact that the rosary is so closely linked to the scapular makes it almost illogical that a rosary should also be worn at the same time, not only because it seems excessively cluttered but also because they so easily get tangled!)

It wasn’t until it became a fashion statement in the 1980s that I ***ever ***thought to stick my head through the loop. And the fact this fashion was introduced in the context of immorality and irreverence is significant!

Interesting responses, I for one do not (I have a big neck)(or a small Rosary) but I think it is great that so many wear the Rosary in Mass. Awesome really, after daily Mass a group stays after and recite the Rosary. It’s beautiful. It actually got me interested in praying the Rosary. Now I pray it daily.

I do not see why it would be wrong. It would be great to have your rosary with you all the time and you can take it out and use it. In the East, prayer ropes are worn on the wrist. I put mine away for most of the day but during my commute when I would use it, I would tie it on my wrist when I make my transfers.

Saint Alphonsus de Ligouri, a Saint who was really, really, really devoted to the Blessed Mother always wore the Rosary around the neck. I do it all the time too. I even sleep with my Rosary and miraculous medal!

It can’t be wrong if you are doing it out of Love.

If it is done out of fashion (meaning it is the “in” thing) or irrverence, well, that is something different.

I’ve seen many religious Catholics wearing the rosary round the neck. To me it makes sense as it allows you to carry it easily and it is then to hand should you wish to pray.

I don’t see a problem with this either. This places it in an honored place on your body, near both your head and your heart. Much more reverent IMNAAHO than just cramming it in a pocket.

Well, I don’t much like stuff hanging on my hands; it seems to get in the way of normal movement. Our heads only need to nod, bend, shake, etc.

And a loop hanging on one’s neck is far less likely to get lost than something in a pocket.

I’ve seen Brothers with Rosaries that wrap around the body; this, however, makes the thing excessively large.

The average rosary is just the right size to go around your neck; since God both inspired the Rosary and designed our soma, I very much doubt there is any problem slipping one over the other.

Apparently, many in Fatima share your situation; they have rosaries there especially designed for the neck. The cord stretches to go over one’s head.

I’m sure that nothing that would be considered “irreverent” would be around the sanctuary of Fatima.

Its harder to take something off my neck while standing in a packed train. Besides, my prayer rope won’t fit through my big head. A rosary can go either way, but again the same situation with taking it off your neck in crowded places.

To each his own I guess. Do what works for you

If it is common in your area or among people you associate with to wear it for gang purposes, it might be best to refrain from wearing it, or at least not wear it so it is visible. While not necessarily a sin it could cause scandal.
