Is wearing a rosary around the neck wrong?

Rosaries have been worn by pious persons long before they were worn for “gang purposes.” I think about how many of the same people who will not wear a rosary around the neck wear rosary bracelets, and nobody sees it as anything other than religious. Because of my own background, I do tend to wear my rosary hidden. I agree with Louis de Montfort that we should not be afraid to express our faith openly. This open expression of faith includes wearing a rosary without fear of how others will see us.
 
I have always been told that it was wrong to wear it like it was jewelry.
Reading all these responses with very reverent reasons to wear it makes sense. I suppose it comes down to why are you wearing it, to shock and scandalize or to pray and have it close to your heart.
After seeing Madonna wear one in the '80s though I don’t think I could wear it around my neck. 🤷

Yes, sadly the sense of sacredness has been taken away by those who are not even Catholics.

As well as get you in a heap of doo-doo if you happen to run into a member of their rival gang and are mistaken for a gang member. You could wind up dead.

Not meaning to be angry or rude o anybody here but, if I lived in the same neighbourhood where a bunch of stuck-up loser idiots wore the most holy Rosary as their ‘uniform’, not only would proudly wear it, but I would go up to them wearing it and tell the sometihng going like: ‘In your face you twits. The Rosary belongs to the Blessed Virgin Mary and to Her children to whom She gave it so that we may go to heaven through Her. It doesn’t belong to you who wouldn’t know devotion if it graciously slapped you across the face.’ And, well, I’d run. I would also bring a bullet proof vest with me but I am so not kidding when I say this.

Maybe I’m not brave enough to go up to those idiots and tell them the reason they suck and in fact, people shouldn’t do that. Its not a sin in th eleast to escape martyrdom and this is thought by the Church but if I wear a Rosary on my neck in spite of them, not only will I show that I won’t let them ‘scare me’ but I would also show the Blessed Virgin that I’d do anything for Her, even at the risk of my life and dignity.

In forums have attended with pilgrims from other parts of africa, its natural to wear a rosary around ones neck. our local priests encourage us to be proud of our faith and wear it this way as a way of encouraging other catholics to not only wear but pray using the rosary:yup:
 
hmmm I’ve never actually worn my rosary before, although I do try to carry it with me as often as possible. I keep it in a small cloth bag in my pocket.

I do however wear a thin silver chain with a crucifix and miraculous medal and st. joseph medal on it though, and may soon begin wearing the brown scapular.

Had it not been for the rosary, given to him by his mother when he shipped out, that he was wearing around his neck, he would have been killed. The center-piece deflected a bullet that would have gone straight into his chest.
This priest was awesome, and did a lot for the veteran’s in our community. He always told this story in his homilies for Memorial/Veteran’s day and I always thought it was a beautiful testament to his love our Our Lady and his mother.

This is so awesome. I’ve herd many stories envolving the rosary.

I don’t think theres anything wrong with wearing it.

In my younger days I used to wear it around my neck until one day the crucifix got stuck between two boards, I all most broke it of my neck. So I started carring in my poket in stead.

The point is, that it could send the opposite single than being a devote Catholic. If it is common where the OP is to wear it as a gang symbol, then wearing it does not show that one is a devote Catholic, rather a member of a gang, which is adverse to all Catholic values.

There is nothing sinful about it at all. However, I wear mine around my belt loop, not only because my Rosary is too small, but because I prefer it around my belt loop. I wear a crucifix around my neck and I’m about to get a brown scapular (As I’m enrolled in it).
 
As an anecdote to this thread people may be interested to know that in former Eastern Europe and especially the countries of Poland, and Czechoslovakia, many Catholics wore Rosary Rings to identify each other as Catholics due to the oppressive nature of the Communist regimes towards an open demonstration of faith. The rings were made of a cheap plated cast metal and it was good to know that a stranger was a Catholic and not a tool of the state.

Interesting,yes. My widowed daughter wears a crucifix ring now and no other rings.
As others have mentioned , wearing a rosary as jewelry is not appropriate.
For my own convenience, I keep several rosaries scattered around my home , in my vehicle and in pocket books. :)😉 Peace, Carlan

well its not jewelery my friend, a priest told me that when i was wearing mine in the hospital.

I have often heard this about people in Africa and South America. Louis De Montfort writes that we should not feel too proud to wear the rosary.

I look at this differently. Those “gang members” who choose to wear the rosary may actually be brought to repentance. What we do not know is if they are wearing the rosary as “gang sign” or because of cultural traditional.
What I am trying to say is that I will not allow somebody else to usurp my reason for wearing the rosary or other piece of religious jewelry.

One of the parish priests told a story from medieval times of a prince who rode around his kingdom sporting a large rosary. This wicked prince never prayed the rosary, but those who saw it began to pray. When he came before the throne of God, our Lady interceded for him because of the number of people he inadvertently encouraged to pray. He recovered from his illness and was able to repent of his previous lifestyle.

I was also taught that you don’t do this. I even remember a classmate tried this when I was in second grade (mid 70s). The sister who led the class ordered it be taken off.

Now, I see it as disrespectful when it is done as a fashion statement. When, done because of a severely chaotic (and dangerous) situation such as war, then it takes on a practical purpose (don’t loose it) and a spiritual (protection). So it is a situational thing.

This is what I was also taught. It is one reason that when I wear my rosary it is hidden. I do see non-Catholics wearing a rosary as a sign of faith, not knowing about the prayer associated with it.
I found it interesting that David Wilkerson, in his book Gates of the Alamo wrote about Santa Anna’s men wearing the rosary on their sombreros.

Oh yes :sad_yes:. I’ve seen a lot of Non-Denominational Christians, Deists, and even Agnostics at my school wearing a rosary around their neck. In fact the girl my friend was dating was an Atheist and she wore one. :confused:
 
I’ve read several stories on this thread about the rosary, so here’s a story I read many years ago, so, I vagely remember parts of it.

The great Turkey army was getting ready to do battle against a much lesser army.
The lesser army went to battle with sword in one hand and a rosary in the other.
The much lesser army won the battle that day.

I’ve read so many stories where the rosary has helped many. Mother Teresa gave her rosary to a man on an airplane, that rosary has healed many people.
