Hey everyone,

Well I’m into old rock: The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, The Clash, The Who, and the Sex Pistols. I go the mall and see a Sex Pistols t-shirt that’s on sale. I really like it, and I buy it. My mom gets angry at me and starts telling me about how it’s sinful and immoral to wear the shirt. There is nothing derogitory on the front: There’s a picture of a london double-decker bus and the words “Sex Pisols: Pretty Vacant.”

I mean, I’m not using this shirt to glorifly sex in any way. I am set on waiting until marriage. I just like the band and their music! I know the Sex Pistols’s and many other band’s music is not exactly Pro-Catholic, but I don’t get my morals from music and movies. I’m strong in my faith, and I won’t let a song change that.

Is wearing this shirt a sin?

That’s great about waiting until marriage…

I wouldn’t consider that as a sin. Some people could get the wrong idea not knowing what or who the Sex Pistols are. But just as long as you don’t let the music influence you…
You know I had a question similar to that…But mine was…Is it a sin to listen to music that are not christ-like. I never asked it, that’s cause I listen a lot to christian music and It’s helped me a lot…I love a lot of country too… okay now i’m rambling about myself…

buuuuuut…I woudln’t feel confortable wearing anything with the word “sex” on it…or skulls or just anything ugly or not christ-like…

no to be too much of a conservative or a critique of your taste in music, but the sex pistols themselves and their music isnt really very holy, i.e. the first four words of “anarchy in the UK”. that in itself could be sinful if you pay too much attention to it, but i guess most “interesting” music is that way. just try not to get to absorbed in that kinda punk culture. and dont wear the shirt to church.

Oh I won’t, and I don’t take their music very seriously at all. I think the Sex Pistols are kinda better than all of those rappers singing about drugs, sex, and violence.

I don’t think it’s a sin, I also don’t feel hugely qualified to judge what is or isn’t a sin.

I would say that I think the more we align ourselves with Christ, the more stuff that seems fairly innocent sometimes starts to seem distasteful. I mean, I used to listen to a lot more hard rock, a lot more hard rap than I do now. I used to watch films with loads of swearing in them and it didn’t bother me. I watched Alien 3 again a couple of nights ago and it offended me, every other word–Is it really necessary?

Anyway the point is, even if its not a sin, if we are truly to remake ourselves for Heaven, if life is about aligning ourselves with Christ and our will to the Divine will, then we don’t ***want ***to listen to anything that might offend our Heavenly Father…Does that make any sense?

Caveat: That doesn’t mean I think it makes you any less of a faithful Catholic if you do wear the shirt, or listen to the music or whatever. I think you’ve got that down! 👍

How old are you and are you living in your mother’s home? If you are still a minor and you are living at home and your mother tells you not to wear the shirt, then don’t wear the shirt. Regardless of how you feel about it.

If you are an adult and she has an opinion, then you are entitled to your own opinion and can wear whatever you want. I don’t think it is a sin, but I don’t think it’s the best fashion choice either. But I do “get” the old bands thing, it is quite popular now to wear old band shirts. I just think Sex Pistols might be a bit much.

I’m 16 and my mom said I could wear it, just not to school or Church. I will respect her wishes.

When I first read you question I had no idea that Sex Pistols was a band. So I wasn’t sure what might be on the shirt, picture wise.

Is it a sin? Let me answer that this way. My husband and I are Over the Road Truck Drivers and I see “All Kinds” of t-shirts out here. Some are cute, some have country sceens on them and yes of course some are the type that promote Sex or Vuglar Words.

When I see a cute animal or the country sceens I think very pleasent thoughts. When I see a shirt that has a sex type sceen on it…or the big words Sex on it…well I’m human what do you supose pops into my mind, and truely I wasn’t even thinking anything until I happen to see someones shirt…

So the best answer I can give you is this. Is it a sin, only if what we wear brings our Brother or Sister into a sinful state of mind. I’m not saying your shirt is sinful…but we must be somewhat careful of what we wear, least we cause someone else to stumble.
