Is what I am wanting to do so wrong?

In 2001 I lost my best friend who was a police officer. He was killed in the line of duty when this happened. I want to ask you all something. I grew up in a very small town where everyone knows everyone and there was 23 people in my senior class.
Here is my delema (SP) I am wanting to give out green ribbons and a stick pin in memory of him at this event that is taking place on the 21’st of next month. About a week ago there were three tenagers , 19 years old, that were in a terrible accident in which two of them died and the third one is in the hospital. The little town is sufferering greatly. I still want to give these green ribbons out for Justin on those days but have had people tell me that it would bring back the hurt of losing the two a week or so ago. I feel like the time and date that the event is taking place should be ample time to get over it and move on. I really want to do this so Justin isnt forgotten. What would yall do? Thank you. I really hope to hear some feedback on this. I did talk to a priest about it and he said for me to go on as planned. What is yalls take on this? There will always be people to second guess, correct or try and interject their own opinions in whatever you would propose do. Go ahead and remember your friend as planned; if your critics don’t like it, invite them to do something similar to honor the teenagers at another time.

That is what I was thinking. Why cant the class that the three former alumni do something for them at this same event? I mean I really have the deep feeling and desire to do this for Justin. I love and miss him so much. This has been a deep desire for me for a long time now. I finally have the funds to do it. Here is a website on Justin so that you will know what he did that was so heroic of him.

I don’t see why it should be a problem at all. Quite the opposite if anything. If I’d recently lost a loved one, I’d be glad to see your gesture, it would remind me that people who are truly loved are never forgotten 🙂

As has been suggested, perhaps consider making it a mutual day of remembrance if you really think the ones affected by the recent loss might feel left out or ignored otherwise.

Thank you for your answers here. What would you do if you were in my shoes and someone had a go at me because of the event of the recent tragedy that had taken place and me giving those green ribbons out while the town is still hurting??

Who is the ‘someone’? And how big is your town? Do you think they are accurate in their surmise that the WHOLE town is still hurting?

If it is actually someone more or less directly affected by the recent loss (family member, friend or close acquaintance of the families of one of the lost ones) who is doing the criticising, then I’d apologise and invite them to help me make the memorial one that pays tribute to their loss as well.

I kind of feel like the one that really is giving me fits about it just doesnt want me to do this. My home town is small. Like less than a thousand people. Maybe the whole town hurting thing is being exaggerated. Sorry for my selfishness but I want my thing to be about Justin. I have been wanting to do this for a few years now. I kind of feel like the town will be fine by then as the event takes place on the 20th and 21st of this month. I just know it will be blown over by then.

I asked who the ‘someone’ is who is objecting - what is their relation to the three who recently died?

Less than a thousand people? That actually is really small, and it’s possible that a substantial part if not literally the whole town might be affected.

Your thing WILL be about Justin - it might just be about these others as well. Nothing wrong with that. 🙂

If we can give St Peter and St Paul the same feast day as each other - not to mention ALL Saints and ALL Souls which feasts we are currently celebrating - then who are we to ignore the pain of those who have recently suffered loss and exclude them in favour of our own deceased?

Perhaps if you could tell us why you want your commemoration to be exclusively about Justin it might help us to understand your objections to also commemorating these others.

Also, be sure to have masses said for your friend, as well as the other kids who died.

When I found out about Justin, I was really going through a bad depression time. The doctors had me so overly medicated that I wasnt able to grieve properly. Justin was my best friend in High School. And since I cant really remember the funeral, I feel like this is my chance at finally keeping his memory alive. I now stop all policemen and women and thank them for what they do and for putting their lives on the line for us to ensure our safety and then I tell them about Justin. I guess I just want to be used like a human torch to keep his memory alive so he wont ever be forgotten.

I found a solution to make all happy. The school colors are black and gold so I got some ribbon of both colors and incorporated it with the green. I said the black was for all graduating alumni who isnt here with us any more, the gold was for our military and the green was just for Justin. That way everyone was happy with it. God somehow helped me to get the funds for doing this. So I am blessed.

Glad to hear it. 👍
