This is my situation.

I work for an organization that has many programs that give assistance to the poor. These programs include heating assistance, headstart, WIC, housing, employment training and unfortunately family planning. I DO NOT work in the family planning department. This organization has no abortion clinics, however they do counsel on abortion as an option. Is it a sin to work for this organization? Also, I am wondering if it is a sin for a person to receive heating assistance, WIC, housing, or headstart from an organization that also takes funding from planned parenthood. All funding money is kept seperate for each respective program. I am interested in hearing your opinions.

I have pondered a question like yours in that if the company I worked for sold one of our products to a planned parenthood or other abortion related business, would I quit the company. Personally I would quit. I have discussed it with my wife and even though it would put us in financial difficulty I think I would resign on ethical grounds.

I would say that since you are asking, your conscience is telling you something. Maybe you should discuss it with your priest.

Somebody is going to tell you that you have to weigh the good the organization does against the bad and then make a decision. Nonsense. There are any number of organizations you could work for that do only the good and won’t go within a hundred miles of blood money from the reprobates at Planned Murderhood. The murder industry uses organizations like the one you work for to prop themselves up in the public mind as “providing non-abortion services” so they can’t be accused of only spilling innocent blood, which is their major source of income. The mafia does the same thing to maintain a base of support. You are unwittingly helping them with their propaganda efforts. Find a different job and feel better about what you do.

I think it is something you should discuss with a priest. Since your organization itself counsels people that abortion is an “option” I think it is problematic. But, you do not participate nor cooperate materially in this. I think if you can find a job at a place that does not provide such morally problematic services you should do so. But, no, I do not believe you are sinning by working in another department of a large social services organization.

the only way you could call this sinful is if you are prepared to investigate each and every social program from whom you accept assistance, for whom you work in any capacity, or with whom you have any business or client relationship. Since I doubt even the most scrupulous Christian is prepared to do that, I would rest easy.

I don’t think we have much choice in any where we work anymore. They are catering to the homosexual agenda everywhere, abortion and who knows what. We might as well not pay our taxes and it would be morally right, because we are being forced to pay taxes that fund programs that are immoral. It would be different if you actually worked for planned parenthood, but how many things are we suppose to do when it comes to feeding your family, you have to asked a priest. Why not state you don’t agree with anything that covers any sin where you work and you might not be working anywhere or with anyone, but you can claim your faith. Even if you own your own business you might be forced by the government to hire people you don’t want to hire. Should we not go to church if we feel that the bishops are not following the rules? Which many are not. You can’t control everything and being scrupulous can be just as bad. Again, ask a priest.
God Bless

Talk to a priest. I worked for a hospital for years in the OR. I knew abortions would be performed and I declined to take part in them whatsoever. I never touched any paper work or worked in or around the doctors who performed them. Your case is a bit different, since it seems you cannot simply disregard one aspect of your job like I did. I’ll pray for you that you make the right decision as to stay there or not. 🙂

I see a lot of people, online and in real life, having “issues” with an organisation they work for that may or may not recommend abortion, even if they themselves ahve nothing directly to do with it. I work for a public district health board, and it provides abortions, but I have absolutely nothing to do with it as it is a different service. I could quit, outraged, but where would I go? Another DHB? They all support and carry out abortions under the guise of the law. Go to a private hospital? Most of them do abortions, albeit rarely, on site, and I could be called to care for a pre/post abortion patient?

So here’s what I do, I witness for the Pro-Life ethic, and it is very, VERY hard. To be known by friends and colleagues at “that anti-choicer”. But I’ve had good conversations with people and when done with logic, reasoning and compassion you can make a big difference.

So perhaps that’s what your purpose there is, to sow the seeds of a pro-life ethic, now, you might not change the position of the compnay, but you may change the mind of a few of the resident pro-aborts. There’s always a few. If you quit, who will stand up for life in this work place?

Our bishop once told the diocese that it is not necessarily sinful to vote for a candidate who is pro-choice unless you are voting for him/her specifically because they are pro-choice. There are a lot of political issues in every election and different candidates in different parties have different positions on different subjects. There is no “perfect” candidate.

Following this same line of thinking, I would see nothing wrong with working for such an organization provided you are not actually working in the “abortion department.”
