I am reading a new book on Catholic prophecy called Unveiling the Apocalypse by Emmett O’Regan which argues that the letters www is transliterated into Hebrew as six-six-six. The basic gist of the author’s arguement is that the writer of the Book of Revelation used a Hebrew form of numerology known as gematria in the passage of the Apocalypse concerning the number of the Beast. The sixth letter of the Hebrew alphabet is the letter waw, which in Hebrew numerals is used to represent the number 6. I was wondering what anyone else’s thoughts are on this?

the **same three **letters of either the Hebrew, or the Greek alphabet never add up to six hundred and sixty and six. (the first 9 letters of both alphabets are 1-9, the second group of the next 9 letters are 10-90, and the remaining letters are 100-600).

I am more concerned about the spiritual climate of the last days, then a number. Jesus said, ‘iniquity will abound and the love of many will draw cold’, and that if it was possible, even the very elect will be deceived.

The letters www (vav-vav-vav), taken as three sixes, would equal 18, not 666.

The author doesn’t argue that the letters equal the number six hundred and sixty six, but rather that the numerical value of www is three sixes - six six six. He states that this is the way the prophecy is most popularly known. Most people don’t say “six hundred and sixty six”, but rather refer to it as the easier to say “six six six”. He also goes on to say that it was originally meant to be understood in a cryptic manner as a reference to the Roman emperor nero, whose name “Caesar Nero” added up to 666 in Hebrew. He also goes on to show that the threefold repitition of sixes would still have been apparent in the Hebrew language which is shesh me’oth sheshim washesh and quotes prominent theologian C.S. Keener as saying that “Although the coincidence would not have been as obvious in ancient Mediterranean numeric systems as it is today, ancients using base ten would not miss the significance of the threefold repetition of sixes.” Many people go to all manner of lengths to acheive 666 from barcodes, etc. But here is this thing that it is almost impossible to buy or sell anything that hasn’t got www on it…

“Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name.” (Rev 13:16-17)

Is there a rule in the prophecy that the three sixes would have to be added together to make another number? Couldn’t they just exist on their own?

The whole argument is probably academic: in a few months` time, yet another “End Times” or “Catholic Prophecy” book will likely come along; and be the flavour of the month for a while, before also disappearing into the proverbial sunset. 🤷

“End Times” fever can be unhealthy. 😦

That Revelation is loaded with gematria is not in dispute. So are other NT writings, notably Matthew’s inaccurate genealogy of Christ, which breaks His ancestors down into three artificial groups of 14, 14 being the numerical value of the name David in Hebrew.

The number of the beast is clearly the cardinal number six hundred sixty six, which would be expressed differently in different systems of numerical notation. It is not three sixes, nor 6+6+6, nor 6x6x6, rather (6x100)+(6x10)+6, and is assumed by most scholars to refer to Nero, who had been dead for some time before Revelation was written, but then, as now, still regarded as evil personified.

P.S. Several early mss. give the number as 616.

The author doesn’t dispute that the original Greek refers to the cardinal number 666, and accepts the preterist position that the original meaning referred to the emperor Nero. He argues that the number 666 could be a (not very) cryptic reference to three sixes, which in an eschatological context could be a prophecy of the letters www being used as an essential component of commerce.

Cryptic and also fleeting, as www is no longer required in url’s.

The 10 digit upc codes also are represented by 3 sixes (in bar code representation), one set of bar codes on either end of the UPC and one in the center. They also encompass 42 other bars. Does that mean such codes represent the beast who has authority for 42 months? one can find anything if one is so inclined.

The first three men on earth, according to Genesis, were Adam, Abel, and Cain.

The first three men on the moon were Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins.

Coincidence? I DON’T THINK SO.

Life is full of mystery. Some of it may be coincidence, and some of it not. Who is to say about these things? The movie, **‘the beautiful mind’ **is a perfect example of brilliance gone paranoid.

Coincidence, or was it done on purpose? Freemasonry dabbles in such word games and numerology. Perhaps the “New World Order” is behind it?

Well, there is the fact that President Kennedy, C.S. Lewis and Aldous Huxley all referred to the moon in their writings or speeches. I am sure it must be coincidence that they all died on the same day, the same year, (Nov.22, 1963) and about an hour apart. You see where one can go with this?

Do you think there can be something more to coincidences? Like providence? I heard somewhere that the Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed by the Romans on the same day as it was by the Babylonians 600 years before… Surely the Holy Spirit can act through such coincidences?

That is very possible, and yes, on the 9th day of Av both temples were destroyed. Solomon’s temple by the Babylonians, and Herod’s temple by the Romans.

Other calamities associated with Tisha B’Av:

The First Crusade was declared by Pope Urban II in 1095, killing 10,000 Jews in its first month and destroying Jewish communities in France and the Rhineland.[3]
Jews were expelled from England in 1290.[3]
Jews were expelled from Spain in 1492.[4]
On Tisha B’Av 1914 (August 1, 1914), World War I broke out, causing unprecedented devastation across Europe and set the stage for World War II and the Holocaust.[4]
On the eve of Tisha B’Av 1942, the mass deportation began of Jews from the Warsaw Ghetto, en route to Treblinka.[5]

Wow, those are some coincidices! If you read further on in that book Unveiling the Apocalypse, it also notes how the number 144,000 times 40 (the biblical number of trial and purification, is equal to (I’m paraphrasing here, I can’t remember the exact number - work it out on a calculator) around 5,750,000 - which is the closest estimate of the exact number of Jews killed during the Holocaust. It also notes that the Holocaust lasted for 3 and a half years (the 42 months of the Apocalypse?) - from that date you mention above to the final liberation of the concentration camps in 1945.

Sobering comments.

Of course they could exist independently, on their own, but that would not be six hundred sixty-six.

Given how often the “666” reference has been used, twisted, and distorted by fundamentalists to “prove” that it referred to the pope, it’s a little strange to see it discussed in a Catholic forum. People have “found” it in the Celtic symbol on the cover of some Catholic Bibles, and in the logo of the US Postal Service. No contemporary, post-Nero reference can really be taken seriously.
