22:21

and I will clothe him with your robe, and will bind your girdle on him, and will commit your authority to his hand; and he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah.

22:22

And I will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David; he shall open and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.

Jesus is drawing from this image of the keys when He gives Peter the keys to the kingdom of heaven in Mt 16:18-19. The keys are a symbol of authority given to the chief official or prime minister of the Kingdom of David. A dynastic succession was also an element of the office of prime minister. When the office was vacated, another was selected to take his place. The Pope is Christ’s earthly representative and is the prime minister of the Kingdom of heaven here on earth, the Church.

Isaiah 22:21-22 is not about the popes. It is about Jesus. There is no hereditary sucession mentioned in Isaiah because Jesus is alive for evermore. He does not need to posses a MAN until he dies and then posses another.

Jesus said that “…the poor ye have always with you, but me you have not always” John 12:8

He left no vicar. He gave us the Holy Spirit richly to guide us. He gives churches bishops, deacons, etc. But the Bible says a Bishop must be married, becasue if he cannot govern his own house, he cannot govern the church of God.

To say that Isaiah 22:21-22 is a prophecy of the popes is to say that the popes are Jesus. Peter is rolling over in his grave. Not to mention Paul.

“Now when the people saw what Paul had done, they liften up thier voices, saying in the speech of Lyconia, the gods have come down to us in the likeness of men And they called barnabus jupiter, and Paul merucrius, becasue he was the chief speaker…they brought oxen and garlends, and would have done sacrifice…When the apostles heard of it, they tore thier clothes, and ran in among the people crying out…sirs, why do ye do these things? We are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein” Acts 14:11-15

Thank you for bringing this up as this is my reading on Sun. I have had problems with the correct pronunciations but got place ot go for that. This reading reminds me of Christ sending out his Disciples. It is all about the House of David.

Isa. 22:20 - in the old Davidic kingdom, Eliakim succeeds Shebna as the chief steward of the household of God. The kingdom employs a mechanism of dynastic succession. King David was dead for centuries, but his kingdom is preserved through a succession of representatives.

Isa. 22:19 - Shebna is described as having an “office” and a “station.” An office, in order for it to be an office, has successors. In order for an earthly kingdom to last, a succession of representatives is required. This was the case in the Old Covenant kingdom, and it is the case in the New Covenant kingdom which fulfills the Old Covenant. Jesus our King is in heaven, but He has appointed a chief steward over His household with a plan for a succession of representatives.

Isa. 22:21 - Eliakim is called “father” or “papa” of God’s people. The word Pope used by Catholics to describe the chief steward of the earthly kingdom simply means papa or father in Italian. This is why Catholics call the leader of the Church “Pope.” The Pope is the father of God’s people, the chief steward of the earthly kingdom and Christ’s representative on earth.

Isa. 22:22 - we see that the keys of the kingdom pass from Shebna to Eliakim. Thus, the keys are used not only as a symbol of authority, but also to facilitate succession. The keys of Christ’s kingdom have passed from Peter to Linus all the way to our current Pope with an unbroken lineage for almost 2,000 years.

In the old Davidic kingdom, there were royal ministers who conducted the liturgical worship and bound the people in teaching and doctrine. But there was also a Prime Minister or chief steward of the kingdom who held the keys. Jesus gives Peter these keys to His earthly kingdom, the Church. This representative has decision-making authority over the people - when he shuts, no one opens. See also Job 12:14.

Go back to the Church Fathers. Not everything needs to be explained through the Bible, not everything is in the Bible. We Catholics would still have God even if we didn’t assemble the New Testament, they can not, they are bible thumpers. God left his Church, Pope and Scared tradition long before we Catholics assembled then qualified the Bible. I’m more interested in finding out where Sola Scriptura and Once Saved always Saved came from.
