how do you know what the Bible means without the church and tradition? that’s why there are so many protestant denomenations.

Hmmmm . . . my considerations are this (bear with me a moment):

There are 3 methods of the Sacrament of Baptism – Water, Matrydom, and Desire, and no one gets into the Kingdom without one of them them. Baptism in the foundation of our relationship with Christ. By trying to argue the “Bible Alone” in sufficient, people are trying to come down on both sides of the Desire fence in an interesting way by relying on intellect (the study of the Scriptures and the use of the natural Gift god gave them) to open themselves up to the Kingdom of Heaven.

So your friend can study Scripture – saying he can get into Heaven by that alone says you must be of a certain intellectual level and education (which kicks out all children in the womb facing miscarriage and abortion, the mentally disabled, those who have not been exposed to sacred scripture, etc.) to bolster his Faith – but even the demons have Faith and tremble. So what makes his Faith different? He also has Hope and Love for God (hopefully), which is a direct Gift of the Living God which this man got in one of the three ways of being Baptized. And since he’s not martyred yet, he may remember being Baptized in the name of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit . . . with water poured over his head while those words were being recited. A clear Sacrament. (And anyone can Baptize, but that’s a different story) And if he never got Baptized by water, how does he know he is not merely following the Bible out of intellectual curiousity?

This is not to throw out Sacred Scripture, which has been referred to as “BIBLE: Basic instructions Before Leaving Earth”. But the Bible is not a Sacrament – it leads to the understanding of Sacramental Life in a way which obliges those to whom God give more to study and reflect on it responsibly. This would naturally lead, to an understanding and certain amount of Desire for the other Six Sacraments (Eucharist, being primary, as Jesus Transubstantiated can be called our true Daily Bread.)

So the Sola Scriptura argument can be countered neatly by asking “Are you/Do you want to be Baptized?” And, like the Queen of Sheba’s Treasurer in the New Testament Acts, you get the reply “Could you please explain this to me a bit more?”, let the fun, faith-filled discussion begin. But always be respectful.

Yours in Christ.🙂

Seek and read from the book of the LORD:
Not one of these shall be missing;
none shall be without her mate.
For the mouth of the Lord has commanded,
and his Spirit has gathered them.

I think we need to consider a few things here.

1.) There was no ‘Bible’ as we recognize it today in Isaiah’s time.
2.) In context, the chapter speaks of impending judgment upon the nations, more specifically Edom. Verses 16-17 are more of an exhortation upon the addressees to confirm the validity of the preceding material by searching said book.
2.) Now we do not know for certain what the “book of Yhwh” refers to. Various opinions hold to be either a self-reference, a post-exilic interpolation, a reference to another work (candidates include a prophetic collection now lost to us, the Torah, and parts or the whole of the OT), or to God’s book of the just (cf. Exodus 32:32-33) or even to the heavens (which in verse 4 is said to “roll up like a scroll”).

In any case, I don’t see any evidence of Sola Scriptura here. 🤷
