Surely he has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
smitten by God, and afflicted.
But he was wounded for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his stripes we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned—every one—to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.
Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him;
he has put him to grief;
when his soul makes an offering for guilt,
he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;
the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
This is a prophecy referring to Christ. “The Father crushed him” seems to suggest that God did pour out his wrath on the Son. Does this support penal substitution?

The notes in the RSV-2CE say "“the doctrine of vicarious atonement is the unique characteristic of this prophecy. We find it in the the New Testament in all it’s fullness.”

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Ora Pro Nobis Peccatoribus!

Yes, that is what it seems to say. He was crushed for our transgressions, instead of us. The bible also says if God were to mark our inequities no one of us could stand.

Hello Shaken, Jesus took away the eternal punishment due for our sins that was incurred in the Garden of Eden by our disobedience. He opened the door to Paradise that had been closed because of that sin; when He died on the Cross. We are still responsible for our transgressions. We must repent and be purified for no-one enters heaven without being purified. Jesus made it possible for this to happen. Jesus made our repentance and sorrow for our transgressions fruitful. That is why in following Jesus we incur a cross similar to His but because of Him we do this with joy.God Bless,nannyma
