Why was more emphasis placed on Isaac if Ishmael was Abraham’s first born?
Also, If God told Abraham that his descendants would be many because of his obedience to sacrifices Isaac, then why did an angel tell Hagar regarding Ishmael that “…I will make him a great nation” Gen 21:18

It’s because God promised Abraham the same thing in verse 13 to console Abraham who was displeased with the idea since Ishmael is still of his blood, but Ishmael was not the chosen one of God and represented Abraham and Sarah’s lack of trust in God to eventually provide.

The chosen one would be born out of near impossibility with Sarah, at the age of 100+, which is Isaac.

That’s why the Islam position that Ishmael is the chosen one is simply untenable because Isaac was born through a miracle.

I feel for Ishmael sometimes, but he was the product of mistrust.

Then why did an angel say “…I will make him a great nation?” Isn’t that going against God by giving Ishmael, the illegitimate son of Abraham, almost the same thing as God gave Abraham?

No, because Ishmael will not inherit the promised land and the covenant to God. Ishmael became the father of nations, but he is separated from God.

Ishmael is not the Old Testament covenant line promised by God, which was through Isaac.
