What is the attitude of Islam / The Quran towards Jews in general ?
 
Nothing much, just that they are the people of the book, we can eat their food, marry their women and that we have to show respect and to honor them.

well its fairly good, although the ‘jews’ as in jewish people, at the time of the prophet, were hated, for continually lying backstabbing and putting muslim lives seriously in danger.

However as far as the islamic attitude towards judaism it is probably the best or second best relation of islam and anything. In modern times arabs have distorted that picture, but Islam itself is very very close to judaism and there are many hadiths about being able to marry, do business, take as friends, invite to dinner, etc with jews/christians and specifically jews.

ps: don’t confuse the Quran with recent history, Islam doesn’t have a problem with the Jews, in fact the Arabs themselves have no real problem with the Jews until after WW2 when the land that they where living on was illegal taken from them by foreign invaders and given away to another group of people without caring what happens to those that already live on that land.

Dear Sheikh! As-Salam Alaykum. What, according to the Qur’an, are the main characteristics and qualities of Jews? .... As regards the question you posed, the following is the fatwa issued by Sheikh Atiyyah Saqr, former Head of Al-Azhar Fatwa Committee, in which he states the following:

“The Qur’an has specified a considerable deal of its verses to talking about Jews, their personal qualities and characteristics. The Qur’anic description of Jews is quite impartial; praising them in some occasions where they deserve praise and condemning them in other occasions where they practice blameworthy acts. Yet, the latter occasions outnumbered the former, due to their bad qualities and the heinous acts they used to commit.

The Qur’an praises them on the verse that reads: “ And verily We gave the Children of Israel the Scripture and the Command and the Prophethood, and provided them with good things and favored them above (all) peoples.” (Al-Jathiyah:16) i.e. the peoples of their time.

Among the bad qualities they were characterized with are the following:
  1. They used to fabricate things and falsely ascribe them to Allah. Allah Almighty says: “ That is because they say: We have no duty to the Gentiles. They speak a lie concerning Allah knowingly.” (Al-Imran:75) Also: “The Jews say: Allah's hand is fettered. Their hands are fettered and they are accursed for saying so. Nay, but both His hands are spread out wide in bounty. He bestoweth as He will.” (Al-Maidah:64)
In another verse Almighty Allah says: “Verily Allah heard the saying of those who said, (when asked for contributions to the war): "Allah, forsooth, is poor, and we are rich! We shall record their saying with their slaying of the Prophets wrongfully and We shall say: Taste ye the punishment of burning!” (Al-`Imran:181)
  1. They love to listen to lies. Concerning this Allah says: “and of the Jews: listeners for the sake of falsehood, listeners on behalf of other folk” (Al-Ma’idah: 41)
  2. Disobeying Almighty Allah and never observing His commands. Allah says: “And because of their breaking their covenant, We have cursed them and made hard their hearts.” (Al-Ma’idah: 13)
  3. Disputing and quarreling. This is clear in the verse that reads: “Their Prophet said unto them: Lo! Allah hath raised up Saul to be a king for you. They said: How can he have kingdom over us when we are more deserving of the kingdom than he is, since he hath not been given wealth enough?” (Al-Baqarah: 247)
  4. Hiding the truth and standing for misleading. This can be understood from the verse that reads: “…distort the Scripture with their tongues, that ye may think that what they say is from the Scripture, when it is not from the Scripture.” (Al-`Imran: 78)
  5. Staging rebellion against the Prophets and rejecting their guidance. This is clear in the verse: “And when ye said: O Moses! We will not believe in thee till we see Allah plainly.” (Al-Baqarah: 55)
  6. Hypocrisy. In a verse, we read: “And when they fall in with those who believe, they say: We believe; but when they go apart to their devils they declare: Lo! we are with you; verily we did but mock.” (Al-Baqarah: 14) In another verse, we read: “Enjoin ye righteousness upon mankind while ye yourselves forget (to practice it)? And ye are readers of the Scripture! Have ye then no sense?” (Al-Baqarah: 44)
  7. Giving preference to their own interests over the rulings of religion and the dictates of truth. Allah says: “…when there cometh unto you a messenger (from Allah) with that which ye yourselves desire not, ye grow arrogant, and some ye disbelieve and some ye slay?” (Al-Baqarah: 87)
  8. Wishing evil for people and trying to mislead them. This is clear in the verse that reads: “Many of the People of the Scripture long to make you disbelievers after your belief, through envy on their own account, after the truth hath become manifest unto them.” (Al-Baqarah: 109)
  9. They feel pain to see others in happiness and are gleeful when others are afflicted with a calamity. This is clear in the verse that reads: “If a lucky chance befall you, it is evil unto them, and if disaster strike you they rejoice thereat.” (Al-`Imran:120)

somebody needs to tell this guy he is using a wrong version of the quran. His version is full of hatred and venom for the Jews.
 
Have you ever heard of the phrase ’ taking things out of context’? There are places in the Quran that talks about the Jews, but it is not talking about all Jews, it is talking about a specific group, in a specific circumstance, for a specific reason.

Ah, the stereotypical ‘out of context’ argument.

Notice, the references are from www.islamonline.com and the article references fatwas issued by Sheikh `Atiyyah Saqr, former Head of Al-Azhar Fatwa Committee.

I have taken nothing out of context other than quoting verbatim from an islamic web site.

Now you take the trouble of telling me what is out of context and why it is out of context.
 
What of this:

“Ignominy shall be their [the Jews] portion wheresoever they are found save where they grasp a rope from Allah and a rope from men.”
Koran 3:112
 
This is talking about both the Jews and the Christians who receive the truth and still reject it and about the people that fight the prophets(pbut) when God sends them:

This is because they disbelieved in the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allah and killed the Prophets without right. This is because they disobeyed (Allah) and used to transgress beyond bounds (in Allahs disobedience, crimes and sins).

Who exactly do we contact so that we can get these verses **in context ** ?
 
The guy said himself that there are just as many positive things about Jews as negative. It just happened that he mentioned more of the negative ones than positive.

and then went on to rant on 20 or more items on why Jews were the scum of the earth.

1:20 - not much of a comparison.
 
He gave an example of one good thing, yes. However he stated that it is balanced. It just means that he didnt give examples of the other good things.

And, it was 10 bad things.

Lovely? Yes it is. But only when the rest of the verse actually elucidates the previous statement. On the one hand, the text acknowledge’s God’s promise to the Jews, but only after condemning them to a life of shame and death.

We can, of course, go on:

“Moses cam unto you [the Jews] with clear proofs of Allah’s Sovereignty, yet, while he was away, ye chose the calf for worship and ye were wrong-doers… Evil is that which your belief enjoineth on you… to live a thousand years would be no means remove him from the doom.” Koran 2:92-96

“[Y]our [the Jew’s] hearts were hardened and became rocks, or worse than rocks, for hardness… such are rightful owners of the Fire; they will abide therein… and on the Day of Resurrection they will be consigned to the greivous doom.” Koran 2:74-85

“Lo! the riches and progeny of those ‘People of the Book’] who disbelieve will not avail them aught against Allah; and such are rightful owners of the Fire. They will abide therein… Hatred is revealed (the utterance of) their mouths, but that which their breasts hide is greater… when they go apart they bite their finger-tips at you, for rage.” Koran 3:116-120 extracts.

“Allah hath cursed them [the Jews] for their disbelief, so they believe not, save a few… For We bestowed upon the house of Abraham (of old) the Scripture and wisdom, and We bestowed on them a mightly kingdom… Hell is sufficient for (their) burning. Lo! Those who disbelieve Our revelations, We shall expose them to the Fire. As often as their skins are consumed We shall exchange them for fresh skins that they may taste the torment.”

You all believe that the y worshipped the calf too. Therefore they violated the ten commandments, therefore to hell they shall go.

Dont try to make us look bad for what you believe

And, dont do this: Koran 4:46-56 Koran 3:116-120 extracts. Koran 2:74-85 Koran 2:92-96…Then all we will say is that it is out of context, becauuuuusssseeee it is 😃
 
The Quarn doesn’t talk about all Jews, it talks about the Jews that where given the message and where sent prophets but turned their backs. God’s wrath is on them alone because they where blessed by God and where ungrateful. Are you telling me that the bible is kind to these Jews?

Wait a second - Catholic teaching makes no judgement about where a person or group of believe will end up when they die. As Christ said, only the Father knows. I don’t cast judgements or condemnations on people - actually, no faithful Catholic even presumes to do so. So please reconsider the logic behind comments like ‘don’t hate us for what you believe’.

If the Koran only talks about one group of Jews, why would it only talk about those who lived several thousand years before Mohamed & the first Muslim?

Look - I’m not attacking your faith, but I am asking serious questions. When someone is genuinely interested, they will pose such questions which require a thought out answer. When someone quotes your holy book, the least you could do is explain the context of the citation - that is, if you are going to continually rely upon the extremely weak ‘out-of-context’ dismissal. Do you guys have Islam apologetics or what???

Land the jews bought at highly inflated prices from the Arabs I might addd, but what a waste.

The Quran does have many problems with jews at the time of the prophet and in perpetuity.
The Quran does also support the idea that Jews were a good people.
For this we must look at the chronology of the revelations.
In the beginning the Jews supported the Monotheism of Mohammed.
They were highly regarded, but the jews then realised that Mohammed was not “the prophet” and then turned away from Mohammed, they were then ignored.
Finally they made a bad move of allying themselves with the Makkans, in a battle the Makkans should have won, but lost due to infighting, this enraged Mohammed, and the jews became almost despised.
In his mind, the jews could never again be trusted, so he set about summarily attacking and destroying their strongholds.

In all fairness, the jews never considered Mohammed as one of them, they were far too ethnocentred. Mohammed was a disgusting gentile.
Mohammed as a military general made the right decision not to trust them.

“O ye who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends and protectors; they are but friends and protectors to each other. And he amongst you that turns to them (for friendship) is of them. Verily Allah guideth not a people unjust. (The Noble Quran, 5:51)”

I think little needs be said about this particular verse.
