I have read several of these "hate and violence" passages that people speak of in many different translations and have read many different opinions concerning them. It comes down to interpretation. Those who live in extremism or choose to go out of their way to try to disprove something will always grab the most misinterpreted versions of these passages. I find them to be no different from passages in the Bible that suggest slavery, stoning, or even the suggested killing of one who works on the Sabbath but I am no theologist of the Bible or the Qur'an and will leave these interpretations for them. But I also have common sense and know that just because one might interrupt it to be true does not make one right in performing those deeds.

I will allow a Muslim with more education concerning this topic to answer this claim. I have read about what you suggest but finding reliable sources that are not attached to anti-Islam sites are rare but I have found some Islamic ones that give description and reasoning concerning the topic. Though the idea of it does not appeal to me it does not surprise me considering the period of time in which they lived. It was not uncommon for this to happen in many parts of the world and can even be recorded today in Christian denominations (mostly extremist cults) and to be fair within extremist forms of Islam (like in Saudi Arabia) but from what I have seen is not tolerated by the majority of Muslims in today's world.Again it deals with the person not the religion. There are many even within the Christian faith that will not look beyond their own religion. There are even Christians that will not even look beyond their own race. This is even true with people in Islam but this doesn't represent Islam nor did my example represent Christianity. People live the lives they choose to. Some will see only their religion or their race but then others will except their brothers and sisters of all religions and races and unite and represent the better of all humanity.

I understand that it must be hard to see one leave a faith that you fully embrace. How I look at it is like this. He made a choice and it doesn’t matter to me what religion he chose as long as he is happy. As long as he lives a good life. As long as he is willing to except the outcome of his choice (not sure how Catholic dogma fully works when one leaves the church). As for his conscience… one should always follow their conscience and if someone is to embrace something they fully do not except or feel it might be wrong they shouldn’t. For they will live a lie on both fronts and not live a good and honest life.

As a followup question has any convert had their lives threatened or tortured by Christians because of their conversion? Or is that only perpetrated by muslims to converts from Islam to Christianity?

Go to the islamic boards on the net and feed off them. This is a Catholic board with a sub-section called Non-Catholic to discuss other religions with Christianity/Catholicism.

I think this is funny how Jastor creates a thread asking an honest opinion to why one might or did convert to Islam just to see the reasoning. A fair and honest question and what happens when someone bites? The warmongering machines comes out of the woodwork to spew hate and totally take the thread off-topic. I have stated my opinion and you have stated yours. We will never agree, no one will ever agree but instead of focusing on something that you have stated over and over again these last few months on these forums every time a Muslim post originates try to refocus that energy to more positive mindset. Let’s put this topic back on target and I look forward to see if anyone else responds with a conversion or possible conversion story to help Jastor find what he was looking for.

This is NOT an islamic site for Q&A to see why people left Christianity for islam. There are tons of ISLAMIC forums on the net for this sort of inquiry.
Second of all, I am trying to be as charitable as I can under these circumstance and what bugs me is that you and jastor came on here just about the same time feeding off “each other” and it seems very… ummmm… strange… and I will leave it to the members of the board to make sense out of both of your posts/replies/OP’s.

It is true that many, many people are converting to Islam. I believe 30% of the Muslim population is consisted of converts in the USA.
I have met all kinds of ex Christians who are Muslims. One I know was a Coptic from Egypt. Bible memorized. BOOM! Wakes up one day, listens to the Qurán in arabic, and questioned since.
Another woman I met, she was from New York and had the entire Bible memorized, word for word. I think many things bugged her about Christianity, so after soul-searching, she found Islam.
Another man, named Dmitri… Born an Orthodox Christian. Really religious, learned Hebrew and Greek. Ended up not agreeing with Christianity so became an Orthodox Jew. Then, he learned of Islam, read up a little, and now he is a Muslim.
Then there are those that come to Islam with no knowledge of their prior religion… People who were born Christians but never practiced. Many who converted just because their husbands were Muslim. Or, to feel a sense of community. Or, people who convert for political reasons.
Others say they were born Christian but couldn’t even tell you the first book of the Bible. Yet, they are very happy with Islam, because when they heard the message, they fell in love with it. But, they didn’t even know much about Christianity.
People convert to Islam all the time, and from all walks of life. Religious and non religious, political and not political, etc.
Of course, I must admit, that I think wayyy more Muslims know about Christianity than Christians know about Islam.
But, I would advise you to go to an Islamic forum and ask the Muslims there. There are even some “revert forums” you could visit, forums created directly for converts.

So is it a case by case basis? For example, the health benefits of a glass of red wine for a male are better than no alcohol at all. Which is it?
And what about in actions? Is it no compulsion in religion but it is acceptable to kill male apostates and force non-believers to humiliate themselves with a tax? Or Christians are allowed to worship but they cannot do so in public or build churches?

But, Muslims are being persecuted too. There have been numerous cases of people who converted to Islam, and were never seen again, because their family most likely killed them.
In fact, my friend(who has paltalk if you wish to talk to him) hasn’t even told his dad. He said his dad would beat him if he knew he was now a Muslim.
It happens both ways. Muslims take their religion very seriously. So do the Copts. They not only take their religions seriously, they also take pride in the name, and cultural roots.
Copts have persecuted Muslims, and Muslims have persecuted Copts. So, let’s not be one sided here. Also, just because Muslims do that, doesn’t mean it is Islamic.

My wife converted from roman catholic to muslim for many of the same reasons given by some of the posters in this thread.
She was born and raised roman catholic, went to church every sunday and was even involved in church programs but she could never imagine Jesus as more than a human.
the second reason for converting, is that she finds a lot of heart and soul in islam that she identifies with.
My mother in-law struggles with her decission wondering where she went wrong in raising her daughter, I never met the father in-law, he is a devout christian, not catholic though, he disowned and ex-communicated my wife and refuses to see his grand daughter.

It reminds me of a saying in Spanish: “las ultimas patadas de un ahogado”, or “the last kicks of a drowning man”. Very sad.He couldn’t have been a devout Catholic if he didn’t believe in the crucifixion and what it means.

I had converted to Islam because of clarity. The purpose of life is clear: worship. The two possible destinations are clear: heaven or hell. Most actions are clear. That is, they draw one closer to God or take one away. Based on an actions benefit or damage it is judged as Required, Permissible, Left to preference, Discouraged, or Prohibited. This is opposed to the western (formerly Christian) world that has lost its Natural Law moorings. Catholicism, for example, tells us that a man and woman cannot enjoy themselves (within the bonds of marriage), if they you used prophylaxis. In fact, this can be a mortal sin. However, homosexuality, which is disordered and unnatural is an issue of debate.

I have been reading about Islam too… and you are right it is very interesting.
I’ll tell you why I choose to stay with my Lord Jesus though:
He is good, holy, pure, innocent, fulfilment of all prophesy, He is LOVE that became Flesh and walked among us, His coming is part of covenant history that also the Old Testament testifies to (whereas the Koran is an island even with factual mistakes about the Covenant -and-salvation-history), Christ changed my life, He healed me, I have seen how the Name of Jesus healed people even from the last stages of cancer. He still raises the dead, both literally and spiritually. He is my Peace.
