very sad, for all, I was in 7th grade, still remember it almost perfectly:(
 
I found it more disturbing that 27% of Americans were willing for their government to use nuclear weapons against terrorist facilities. That’s more than scary.

I tend to believe that this opinion stems from the willingness, indeed the desire, of such terrorists to obtain and use nuclear weapons against civilian targets. When viewed within that context, it is at least understandable.

This is not meant as a criticism, only as an observation, but it appears that one of the weaknesses of Islam is the lack of a central authority. There is no one to call out the aberrant Islamists and purge them from the faith. In other words, there appears to be no Islamic equivalent of “excommunication”. As a result, Islam is going to need to find another way to reform and educate those within the faith that are using Islam to justify murder. Only Islam itself can do this effectively.
 
It’s not really comparable at all. Even if they would like to get their hands on them, Al-Qa’ida minded terrorists are never going to get their hands on nuclear weapons, it just isn’t going to happen. The American government on the other hand has their finger on the button.

And I don’t think so. The Pope excommunicating the IRA didn’t stop them from bombing my country for decades and killing thousands of people.

Maybe not, although it’s hard to know how many were deterred by the possibility of excommunication isn’t it?

In any event, I submit that it would be more productive for Islam to bring the aberrants back into normalcy, to reform them from within, rather than leave the terrorists to the tender mercies of the various military organizations of the world. Would it not be better to convert them away from their aberrant beliefs than to have someone else hunt them down and kill them?

I found it interesting, tho’, that when confronted with the fact that terrorists are seeking to obtain nukes to use on civilian targets, that bit was ignored in the subsequent response. 🤷

i’ve read that part, and i’ve read your post about this context. i still cant agree on it being the excuse. nukes are pretty serious stuff that can mean the end of civilization itself. for me the only excuse to use nukes is when somebody nukes us first. even if me or my loved ones becomes the first target, i still cant agree on being the initiator of armaggeddon.

Oh, please don’t misunderstand, I’m not advocating the use the nuclear weapons. I merely stated, in response to another poster who found those polled who were in favor of the use of nukes to be “disturbing”, that such an opinion might be more understandable within the broader context of the intent and stated desire of terrorists to use nuclear weapons on civilians. It’s an attempt on my part to understand the motivation of such a response to a pollster, but in no way represents that I personally advocate such a position. I do not.
