I read somewhere that Islam was treated like a Christian heresy in the early years when it first came out. Is there any thing written out there about that that I can use as proof?

Everything I find just says it but without quotes and sources.

The first and earliest to do this was St. John Damascene in De Fide Orthodoxa. He had a whole chapter on islam. He knew about it personally having grown up in an islamic environment.
